  • The UFO Dripper is a new conical pour over brewer that aims to bring those familiar clear and bright cup profiles while also being more consistent than the widely popular Hario V60. This claimed consistency is credited to its wider 80° angle and deeper air channels.

    I have a UFO and I tend to agree with you when compared to the V60. I tend to prefer coffees with more acidity and clarity and honestly sometimes a little less extraction %... depending on the coffee. I also find the workflow of the V60 to be a little easier than the UFO, no folding filters and it's easier to clean. The guys behind the UFO are awesome and I was very impressed with all the R&D they put into it. Nice review man!

    A manual brewing device is only as good as the user, and your best brewer will ALWAYS be the one you’re most familiar with. More knowledge + better water equals better brew-“you should know this by now”, right? Adding another dripper to the collection doesn’t equal a better brew; zero bypass doesn’t equal better brews either. The coffee itself governs the brewing methodology, and there is no one-size-fits-all solution. Some coffees work well with zero bypass, while most coffees work great with a conical brewer like the V60. Sometimes, adding water after the brew “intentional bypass” is excellent as well and will bring out the best in a coffee. It all depends on the coffee and your knowledge.

    As a person that has mainly brewed pour over for 6 years now, I've had this experience with most drippers. I buy a new bag of coffee, use a mix of drippers for a few batches of coffee but inevitably grab my v60 more often than not till the bag is empty.

    If the product is 3D-printed too, it seems like a missed opportunity not to just include a 3D-printed filter folding guide out of the box

      That’s an interesting point. I honestly haven’t seen any of the filter folding drivers I’ve had come with a 3D printed folding guide. I mean, it does come with a Disputer, which helps some but essentially will show you if you folded it accurately enough or not when it’s applied.

    Ha! I saw it in a cafe in NC back in February. Was their first day using it too.
    Can't really compare it with anything, but coffee was super tasty and clean.

    The thing is with FDM 3d printed parts is that the layer lines mean that they can never be food safe as bacteria can grow between those layers. I don't know why these small manufacturers think they can get around this.

      They actually mention this on their page. They recommend cleaning it regularly with hot water and cafiza and then scrubbing it with dish soap and hot water. I have one and haven’t had any weird build up or off smells coming from it.
      They also have a V2 coming out that is injection molded

    • @mowcius
      @mowcius Місяць тому

      Interestingly they also state on their website that despite using a stainless steel nozzle (presumably with no certification of its own or they'd give it), they use their printers for other materials, so the manufacturing process cannot be considered food safe. Also, nothing is said about the rest of the printer - is it a certified food safe stainless steel heat break and heating chamber, extruder, reverse bowden etc?
      I understand why they've taken the path that they have as injection moulding is unbelievably expensive to set up, and the risks with 3D printing are low, but if there's ever an issue I'd not want to be them!

    Hario switch is the best pour over period. The heat capacity of the glass is negated when you rinse the filter anyways.

    Hi Spro, I loved your review and might only add that the most immediate red flag for me with the UFO was that the folded papers create a fundamentally variable bed: 1/4 of the whole bed is being drained through a double layer of filter.
    As far as v60 papers go, I'd be curious to hear your thoughts in the future about the Cafec TH-3 and/or Cafec Abaca filters (currently my favorites to use on the V60).

    What are the features of the Melitta pour-over system that need to be remedied by these other products. Since the Melitta only filters from the lower section rather than the entire height of the cone, I could see stalling as an issue, but that feature would seem to reduce bypass.

    I have a UFO, while I don’t use it often it’s great for when coffees are too dense for the V60. Something I’ve also been doing with FAST filters is pushing my ratio a little more (1 : 17 1 : 18) This extra bit of water helps with that fast drawdown and lifts the texture a bit. Especially since these filters are more porous. I don’t like going that much finer when using them. I’ll definitely go one or two clicks finer, sometimes I’ll even slow feed at those ranges. At the end of the day, brewers are just tools to help the coffee shine. Hope this was helpful.

    • @janmalec7349

    • @ianlacour9701
      @ianlacour9701 27 днів тому

      @@janmalec7349 because the V60 is a conical brewer, the bed becomes compacted towards the bottom of the bed. This isn’t ideal when grinding finer with denser coffees because of how they grind.

    Have you YAMA version of a Chemex Brewer? I know totally different than the brewer of this topic. It has a metal cone filter. I know you are more of a paper filter fan, and I rather have metal filters even in a drip brewer. The YAMA however makes a fine pour over and seems to be very forgiving and holds the temperature well . I encourage you to try one if you have not already done so and perhaps review it.

    I’m looking forward to your Zerno and production Philos reviews and I have a request…
    I’ve been slow feeding my Niche Zero with 4-6 beans per micro-dose. This gives higher uniformity and a cleaner result. With the reduced fines, I dial the grind 5 to 10 ticks finer than normal.
    I’m curious if slow dosing has an effect on auger/prebreaker grinders. If they truly avoid fines from traffic jams and regrinding, then manually slow feeding the beans should cause much smaller changes.
    To me, testing single dose grinders with normal and slow feed styles tells people more about the capabilities of a grinder. For instance, one might do the full dose for high body espresso and slow feed for clear filter coffee, making one grinder do-it-all without the need to swap burrs.
    Given that slow feeding is free (for money, but not time), it’s a valuable tool for the home barista. I always slow feed my Niche these days as I wait for the Philos ship date to arrive.

      This is a good request and happy to give this a go on upcoming auger grinder reviews. Thanks for the solid suggestion.

      The issue isn't printing the material, the issue is making this food safe. Unfortunately that is not the case with this product as they did not perform any postprocessing steps to smooth out the layer lines. The porosity of the layer boundaries will collect bacteria. Hopefully the Tritan does not leach chemicals into the brew as well -- I doubt it would, but I still wouldn't use this brewer as is. Food safety is not something to mess around with.

    • @djispro4272
      @djispro4272 Місяць тому

      @@danielsmullen3223 It does look like they didn’t post process it much, if it all - that is disappointing. I am aware of the fact you do need to minimize the space where bacteria can get into, whether by smoothing or putting a layer of epoxy on there. Also depends on if they used a stainless steel nozzle - otherwise they could have also leeched lead or heavy metals into there. My main concern is the brass nozzle issue.

    • @danielsmullen3223
      @danielsmullen3223 Місяць тому +1

      @@djispro4272 Worrying about toxic chemicals leeching is definitely a big concern, but that's really not even meeting the minimum standard for food contact safety as opposed to being food safe (there's a big difference). According to their site, they at least claim to be using contact-safe materials -- Tritan -- and a stainless nozzle for printing the UFO, so I'm not as concerned about leeching chemicals from the plastic. There is no evidence of any postprocessing. either by smoothing or applying a coating. This means that the brewer will become dangerous after repeated uses and cleaning won't help, in fact it will likely make it worse. Their site was more concerned about water infiltrating the interior of the print, but they haven't given any thought to the surface porosity. That's where food safety really becomes an issue. To be honest, using toxic materials is less about food safety and more like criminal negligence... But unless you plan to only use this brewer once and throw it away it could easily make you sick.

      I think you’re missing the point too, the fact that 3D printers are more accessible than ever doesn’t make this and other items made in that way worth less. It just evens the playing field for people with ideas and the motivation to go out and make them a reality. It’s not as simple as just hitting print on a 90 degree cone.
