I Definitely take notes of sound theoretical synopses/examples that strike me as well crafted. Moreover, I know the fretboard so I can transcribe what I hear & see.

You kill him with the comparition to Allan. He´s 27 and really good but Allan was a force of nature, revolutionary and fresh. Not a coppy or a guy with just great insane chops. This cat is yet to find his own true voice, and some times that takes to stop listening to youre idols and go in a different path. I'll keap it in my radar im sure he will acomplish great things ahead.
In fairness, I don't think I killed him....unless by "kill" you meant; conducting a great interview, eliciting amazing answers, did an amazing job editing it, did a fantastic job of availing you to an amazing guitarist you've never heard of, then I hit it out of the fookin PARK!

For the longest time Allan was only appreciated by that relatively small group of aficionados who were lucky enough to discover with him and truly connected with his genius. It is so pleasing to finally see more and more young guitarists who are clearly influenced by his multi faceted creativity and technique. More and more guitarists are building on his genius and in time we will fully understand the huge and indelible legacy he has left on the art of guitar. I am old enough to have bought Igginbottom when it first came out and Allan’s music was the soundtrack to my life from then on. RIP Maestro🎸🤘🏻❤️

I'm very excited to hear this "7 string metalish" music Thomas is cooking.....i love chaotic death metal and holdsworthian chaotic death would be amazing and exciting to head for sure. Thomas's music is very reminiscent of holdworth, but is not him and you can tell, and jazz is a very reminiscent based style like many others, metal for sure, country, blues, all the latin american rithms...and the list goes on and on...i think that what i'm trying to say is that in music there is allways development from what came before and the music that i personally enjoy the most is that music that tells me "this i took from the beatles, this i took from morbid angel, this i took from facundo cabral, this from Los prisioneros, etc..." so you can make that game of archeollogy with it,.... i enjoy that,......anyways,...thanks again for the upload 👍 and to Bret for highlighting Thomas

Great player, good interview, and he seems like a nice fellow. I’m glad to have been introduced to some new talent. Clearly (based on the comments) folks aren’t too enamored with the choice of wording in the video’s title, and I can see why, but at least it was addressed to some extent in the video.
My ear for harmony is too remedial to fully appreciate the genius of AH or this guy, for that matter, let alone to make any intelligent distinction between them. I just like this style of music.

I could say that there were improvisers before. Alex Machacek, Alex Sill, Richard Hallebeek, TJ Helmerich, Brett Garsed, Scott McGill, etc. But this Thomas Dawson guy is amazing. Sooner or later, he surely joins the lineup with them. Thanks for introducing him to us!
Nedwin, he is a far better improviser than any of those guys! That's the thing that really separates him from them!
He's a great player in his own right - following the chord movement(s). Very nice. I'm sure Chris Poland would be smiling upon hearing Thomas too, at least that's partially what I heard. 😊

Chris is incredible, really unique voice on the instrument and I've only heard maybe one or two players on youtube closely adapting his style
I don't hear Chris Poland in his playing. I hear a lot of Holdsworth which is kind of boring, because there are already too many Holdsworth copies!
@@alexfadista Give a listen to Chris' work with OHM, Peace Sells and just about anything he's done recently, and you'll most likely hear what I intended to convey. Chris is not a simply a product of his influences and neither is Thomas.
@@WorldvsTruth I know pretty well Chris Poland, I love Ohm, his solo albums etc. but I really can't hear Chris in Thomas' playing. He's clearly an Holdsworth fan. And it's kind of boring, I wish I heard at least just a glimpse of Poland in his playing, would be kind of refreshing because he's quite ignored among fusion players. Holdsworth is great but guitarists need to stop listening to him and praising him like he's kind of a god.
Great video and what a beast is Thomas. amazing player! BUT with all do respect sir i have to mention to Charles Altura as The one who deserves the title of being the "Next AH", i was fortune to saw him with Chick in 2014, it was imposible to me not to noticed the strong influential and conection with Allan. i never heard someone else to have the same level of improvisation and fluity like Allan but without copying the sound or superficial cliches. I read in some post that He is the "young geezer" that Allan wanted to play on his album "in case he croaked". it would be awesome if he could make an interview with you but i know he is a bit out of social media. Love this guy I think and hope Allan left behind a style and feel that others take on board and even develop further on o me I love the sound of note patterns that have an indirect and less obvious relation to the underlying changes andy(bob)yates
SO good to hear & see younger players playing with both fire, finesse, and FEEL! (Especially when TikTok and UA-cam is filled with 'shredders' who think bending strings is for old people - they'll rather sound like a runaway sequencer, it seems).

Liked the album, listening to it a lot, actually. Also liked the mature way he discussed his influences. Allan isn't with us anymore, and Thomas is going to take that school of playing forward. If, of course he is able to stay with it. The world has never been an easy place for artists. I like the elegant brooding in his compositions. As he matures as a composer (and I don't mean that to sound patronising, promise!), the Holsworthy traits will evolve into something else that we all dig. Intelligent, exciting stuff with grace and dexterity.

True I thought about blues when I said that lol ,theres guys like Scott Henderson ,greg Howe and some others that have obvious influence from Holdsworth but they sound like themselves . That being said it is interesting how this guitarist figured out these intervals and scales that are unnatural to guitar and more relevant to Sax and Keys ,as a fan of The Holdsworth Legacy if I stumbled into Venue and i heard this Guitarist I would enjoy it and might ask questions after the show, but of course I'd know who he studied thoroughly . Another thing is I'd have to hear his compositions , that might be a different story.. if it makes a person happy keep doing what you love ,there is a lot of young people that never heard this approach including Jazz and fusion students and performers. you'll blow there minds lol

As a self-proclaimed streetwise, you must have known the provocative effect this would have, so it must have been your intention to stir up controversy. Was it really "streetwise"? Well, you sure got a lot of views and "engagement" that way. I do hope it was worth it for yourself and Mr Dawson. I just keep thinking about all the times an artist has been hailed as "The new Dylan", most of which has effectively served to ruin the artist's career. In the same way I enjoy "Truth In Shredding", I also enjoy "Truth In Advertising". So I am afraid that I won't be returning to your channel.
Hey Dude, Here's a couple new (to you - maybe) Brecker solos. I'm an old fart so these came out when I was a teenager. Not saying to learn the solo - just pure love. The first album is called Rainbow by Will Boulware. Couple of long fade out solos. 70s. The first one is "I like it." Great MB R&B solo. Terrific. There's another on the album, but I don't remember the name. Like 5 minute fade out solos.
Second one is someday my prince will come by ben Sidran. Classic MB solo. One of his very best. You really ought to put that one into your heart. Especially the first chorus.
Love your playing. I'm a straight ahead guy. I was 15 the first time I heard Charlie Parker. Not him, but a band called Supersax. Parker solos transcribed for a full sax section. I was a classical clarinetist. Sax in the big band, but nothing made my heart sing like Charlie Parker. I remember listening to Supersax and I remember telling my 15 year old self that I found love that very day. Keep shredding. Huge fan.

Don' know if he'll be the next AH, but he certainly joins the ranks of IMHO equally off the charts Jazz Rock improvisors such as Tim Miller, Ben Eunson, Mateo Mancuso. 9:09 - Did he say Major add flat 6 + flat 3? I don't recall Allan Holsdworth mentioning that one.

How do I buy the album? I'd do it right now, but I don't use Spotify, don't see it available in Amazon (would hate it in MP3 anyway), and don't see it available anywhere else. This style is my favorite and this discovery has me totally captivated, so I don't want to go too long without purchasing Thomas' music and listening a lot.

Great musician. As much as I admire Allan Holdsworth, I must admit it’s really good to see that he wasn’t “one off” as many experts say. Another example of a guitar player who is mastering such a multi dimensional scaling is Alex Sill. Pretty incredible musician too.
I would definitely not put him and Alex in the same category. To my ears Alex is more Lich oriented. Thomas actually understands Allan Holdsworth‘s language. Thanks to the fact that Brett Stine codified it for us all. Did you see the interview with Brett Stine?

Yall need to check out - derryl gabel, marhsall harrison, and tim miller. No one is another allan but many have came close to his sound and evolved it to thier own style/tech and these names are a perfect example. Like tim millers 2-1-2 technique and marshalls swybryd picking.

Tim Miller is a brilliant guitarist. I also have a sneaking suspicion you didn't watch the entire video. If you had you would've seen/heard Thomas address the title that the thumbnail asks. I would recommend you go back to it and definitely check out the Marshall video.

I met allan three times. he clearly hated his own playing. the last time i saw him, i was sitting three feet away from him, his Hughes and Kettner amp heads were on my table, a few inches away (I kept my drink on the floor to be safe). He actually turned to me and apologized for his solo during "fred', which, i gotta say, he was lost on. but he was mad at the drummer for being an hour late. during 'fred', the drummer was playing with one hand while texting his girlfriend, the reason he was late. allan was PISSED. he cursed the drummer out before he arrived! I approached the drummer and said 'hey, thanks for showing up' , he withdrew his handshake, lol! Ronald Bruner jr...

Sure we do! But we already have Pat Metheny! Everybody knows Pat,but many don't realize that Pat is even a better player that they realize! Pat is just so smooth and flawless in his playing that the Music passes right on by!

Pat Matheny is absolutely incredible and probably one of the greatest improvisers to ever have lived. Rick Beato gave me a recording of him when he was 29 and it is absolute perfection.
@@streetwiseguitar5113 Metheny is not the great innovator that allan holdsworth was. Holdsworth redefined how to play guitar. And his chordal compositions were in uncharted territory.
He's a genius.

@@pobinr I must disagree with you. PM created a SOUND and WAY of playing (legato) that didn't exist before him. He also created compositions in a style that didn't exist before him. He's every bit as hvy as AH. Just a diff. genre

You know, Jesus I'll tell you something… There are lots of people who can play transcriptions of Alan Holdsworth, and yes… I remember a time when nobody played his transcriptions. But like everything, shit gets figured out...yet there are probably only for people who can actually improvise with his language... And I'm talking about on this entire globe.
@@streetwiseguitar5113 agreed! it took me 15 years of guitar playing to mimic some of Allan's phrasing and over 25 years to be able to construct a solo of mine based on his vocabulary. My point was that for the last decade musicianship had such an enormous progress that make even Allan's playing accesible!!! And this is very promising

I often wonder about comments that say something to the effect that a band “sounds like the Beatles “in a derogatory manner. Wouldn’t it have been great if the Beatles have been around longer to produce more music? Same thing with Allan Holdsworth, despite how long he was playing. Would’ve just been great if there were more.
If Thomas ends up creating good albums/tunes, I don't care if he sounds like Holdsworth (as some people were complaining that he's a copycat).
Someone has to continue the Allan Holdsworth 'sound' .
