    A very informative and useful video Mr Brown. I've got a MB146 where a tarnished barrel needs replacing. The local dealer wanted a fortune to do the job. I'm practical enough to give this a go thanks to your clear instructions. Now have to look for both a barrel and a dis-assembly tool.

      sbrebrown Steven, this is what makes the Internet (and UA-cam) so wonderful. Enthusiasts and experts providing extremely useful information and instruction to the world that circumvents the monopoly, "knowledge is power" syndrome and pricing of greedy manufacturers and distributors.

    Wow! Great. Actually... I was able to simply unscrew the nib/feed-section by hand quite easily... Without having to apply a lot of pressure... I didn't have the stomach to pull out the nib, but havinf seen this, I'm willing to try. Hopefully I'll be able to stay away from the worls of pain! :)) Tnx, Mr. Brown!!

    Question: if the piston rod is broken, can a home repair guy replace the piston rod? wondering how deep is the "world of hurt?:"

  • @markos741
    @markos741 11 років тому +4

    No. Never! :) I am never going to touch my MBs :-) Although I must admit that sooner or later I will have to change the nib of the 149 because a bit of tiping material is missing and it is a tiny bit scratchy. Just a tiny bit, but enough to piss me off. But at the end perhaps I'll let MB to do that even though I'm aware of the costs...
    Great video, there are not many (or maybe none) on UA-cam about disassembling the MBs which makes it very special. Good job!

    +levi siccard Yes, if the grease dissolves, the seal will become less effective and you can get leakage. Alternatively, the piston seal itself can have deteriorated, but that is more common with vintage cork seals than with modern nylon seals, I think. So I would first try to add some grease to the piston seal. I always use silicon grease (don't use Vaseline, which is petroleum based), like this www.andersonpens.com/10-ml-Jar-of-Silicone-Grease-p/rs-silicone-lg.htm.

      sbrebrown Thank you very much, I indeed used some grease and my pen is working properly again.

    Took apart a newly acquired early '80s 149, and "entered a world of pain". Precious resin DID crack (section). This pen still had the MB assembly sealer in place. Anyone got a lead on where I might find a replacement? I've checked Ebay & google, and apparently I've managed to break the most unobtainium part of the pen. To make matters worse, the sections don't interchange along the model chronology. I don't know what MB would charge to fix the pen, but I have a felling it could be more than what I paid for it. SUCKS that MB won't sell parts to owners...

      sbrebrown I'm soaking the nib and ink chamber in distilled water now, Stephen. I believe it's been sitting with dried ink inside for nearly 20 years. Would you recommend flushing it with diluted ammonia or only distilled water?

    Stephen, I don't have the MB warranty booklet so I am interest in taking my MB 149 apart. The piston suction is rather weak and it has a small leak I believe. Could you give me a direct link to where you have purchase this Chinese made tools to open it up? Thanks.

    Do you have any experience (or know of anyone) repairing a Montblanc mechanical pencil? I have a Virginia Woolf edition mechanical pencil, and the shaft has come dislodged from the resin barrel. It looks like it stays in place by pressure with a knurled end that presumably fits into the resin barrel.

    Hello Mr. Brown, I have a Montblanc 146 wich is leaking inkt at the top of the pen (not the nib side but the other side where the piston system is) since some days now. The pen is from 91 and I decided to take it apart. Everything seems okay but I noticed that there is no grease at all at the piston parts. everything behind the piston was very inky and thats how the ink got out trough the moving parts. (1 shirt ruined and some messy hands)
    1. could this be the cause of the leaking?
    2. What grease should i use best, any tips or an ebay link?
    PS.: thanks for all the usefull reviews and know how's. Got myself a small Jinhao collection recently and I like them very much!

      lutha blisset Montblanc does not sell replacement parts to individuals, so your best bet it to send in the pen for repair, or try to find a spare part on eBay or penboard
