    My name is Josh. I'm 26 with all of my limbs in tact and fully functional. I drive a tow truck for a living and change countless tires a week for road side assistance services.. I know how much a pain in the was it can be to do. But with no arms.. That's amazing. But besides that I watched a video of you pumping gas which lead to the driving video to the drive thru video to this one.i just wanted to say that you're drive to do things without assistance is inspiring. And I just told my wife I feel like I have no right to complain about anything anymore. I hope I can raise my children (who have all their limbs intact as well) to have half the will power and determination that you do. Thank you for being such an inspiration and god bless

      I read your very nice comment, but as I gazed to the reply section, I noticed something awe-Inspiring. The like number was at an extraordinary position. I had to make a choice of great magnitude, 69 or nothing? As I sat there pondering, a very sudden feeling swept over me, I knew with absolute certainty what I was to do. I....
      Left it at 69

    Congratulations,you did it. Quite a feat of determination. I hope you won't have to do it again. Could be dangerous for anyone. I had one fall on me. I'm an old man now and had a flat at the grocery store this summer. I started changing the tire. I got the car jacked up and a young guy come over and insisted on doing it.I was happy to let him because,NOW THIS IS THE IMPORTANT PART, it gave him a sense usefulness and happiness by helping me.

She loves scuba diving. I bet you would be good at several sports. I would encourage you to look into it. I'm glad that you are out there living life to the fullest. God bless and keep on keeping on.

    Hi Tisha, great videos ! One helpful hint for you or anyone is to use what mechanics call a power bar. In this case, I would suggest a 3 foot long piece of abs plastic pipe, about 3" diameter. Slip it over the x-wrench when its horizontal and then step on the end of it. It will give you about three times the power to be able to crack the nuts loose, and more power to tighten them afterwards. Also, the bigger radius is gentler on limbs ! Thanks again for your vids !!

    Back in the 70's when I started college, I took my first programming course. First assignment was to write a simple program, go to the IBM 370 computer center, figure out how to submit it. Back then programs were entered using punch cards which you made using a specialized keypunch machine. I walked in, seeing all those machines with lots of buttuns, levers and typewriter pad clicking away. Being clueless as to their use, I walked up to the first guy I saw at one and asked if he would show me how to use this contraption. He said sure, leaned back in his chair, wearing socks that had each toe individually covered like a glove, loaded in some cards flipped the appropriate levers and buttons , all with his toes, teaching me how to use the machine. It wasn't until he started that I noticed his missing arms. Talk about a lesson that stuck. Several years later, I saw him teaching as a professor, using an overhead projector instead of a black board. I bet his students were as inspired as I was. You amaze me in a similar way. Your smile and your wonderful can do attitude inspire us all. In an exspression that shows my age, "You Go Girl". I think the channel of videos of things you can't do would have no material at all. By the way, instead of standing on that lug wrench, try kind of stamping on it a few times, the impacts should act as a force multiplier and will require less of your energy to loosen and to tighten those bolts.

    Trisha, you are amazing. The one concern I have is that you need to put a chock behind one of the wheels to stop the car from rolling. Other than that, you are amazing beyond belief! And you don't lose your sense of humor. The Lord bless you and keep you.

  • @soilmanted
    @soilmanted 8 років тому +3

    Some ideas to make it easier.
    Break the lug nut or lug bolt free BEFORE jacking the car up at all. Use a wrench with a longer handle to provide more leverage and make it easier. If you can't find a wrench with a longer handle, you can use a small length of metal pipe over the wrench handle to extend it and increase leverage. Be aware that if the nuts have previously been overtightened, you could bend the wrench, and putting a pipe over the wrench handle makes it easier to bend the wrench.
    Assuming the car is like most and the handbrake works on the rear wheels, before loosening the nuts make sure the handbrake is set and the front wheels are chocked to prevent rolling.
    I can't be sure but it looks like you jacked up a rear wheel at the reinforced area on the pinchweld, and placed the jackstand forward of that point, where the pinchweld may not be reinforced. Just be aware that if the jack should give out and the car should fall onto the jackstand, the pinchweld may bend somewhate at the point where the jackstand was placed.
    The service manual or owners manual should designate side support points, 1 for each wheel, along the pinch weld - points where the pinch weld is reinforced. It should also designate a center jack point for jacking up the whole front (the 2 front wheels) and another for jacking up the whole rear. Since the reinforced points along the pinch welds are small, there is usually no room to place BOTH a jack, and a jackstand, under the reinforced spot. So if jacking up only one wheel, usually only a jack is used, without a jackstand, or if a jackstand is used, it is only used as an extra safety measure, knowing that it may bend the pinchweld if the jack should fail and the car should fall onto the jack stand, but at least there is something there to keep the car from falling down completely and causing injury. With only a jack holding up the car, any kind of jack, you should of course never put your head under the car, and limbs should be placed underneath only momentarily, and ready to be instantly pulled out. With a rolling jack, a safer method to jack is to jack up an entire axle, then place one jack stand on each side of the car - at the point where the pinch welds are reinforced. Then lower the car onto the jack stands and withdraw the jack. By the way, the reason a rolling jack has wheels is not only to roll the jack into place, but to allow the jack to roll forward as its lift pad goes up. It needs to roll as the lift pad goes up because the lift pad goes up in an ARC; it does not go straight up. The car remains still, the as it goes up the lift pad gets closer to the handle of the jack, so the entire jack needs to roll forward.
    While the wheel is still in the air, just SNUG up the lug nuts. Wait til all 4 wheels are on the ground before fully tightening any lug nuts. Put a single drop of oil on the threads on the studs, or lug bolt before tightening the nuts or the bolts. Also put a single drop of oil on the mating surfaces of the nut, where the nuts' or bolts' surface contacts the wheel's surface. Spread it around. Make sure the wheel's surface is free of sand or soil. Then use a torque wrench to tighten the nuts or bolts. The oil on the thread makes it easier to run down the nut, and the oil on the mating surface makes the torque measurement more accurate. A click type torque wrench may not be as accurate as a bend-beam torque wrench but it is generally easier to use, and accurate enough. A deflecting beam torque wrench is both accurate and easy to use. Also they are both typically quite long, and thus provide enough leverage to make tightening easy. It is primarily the friction between the wheel and the inside surface of the lug nut, that keeps the lug nut from loosening. Some people think it is friction between the threads of the nuts and the threads of the studs, but it is not, rather, these threads these serve to provide the leverage needed to force the inside surface of the nut firmly against the surface of the wheel. The amount of force needed to overcome friction between 2 surfaces (and thereby loosen the nut) is directly proportional to the amount of force pushing the 2 surfaces together, and the spirally configured inclined plane of the threads is what enables increasing the amount of force.
    The torque needed to tighten the lug nuts on a smallish car is typically around 80 foot pounds. Owners manual may have the specification. Many mechanics over-tighten the lug nuts. Overtightening stretches the studs, weakens them, and actually WEAKENS the attachment of the wheel to the brake hub. A torque wrench is not expensive, but you can also measure the tightness with a scale placed at a specific point on the wrench handle. 80 foot-pounds means a force of 80 pounds at a point on the handle 1 foot from the center turning axis of the lug nut. If you measure force at 2 feet, you only need 40 pounds of force to tighten the nut to 80 foot-pounds. The math is very simple.

    • @BlackGT1999

      Theodore Zuckerman false. Your suggestion of "oil" is dangerous. As it will definitely cause an inaccurate torque reading and or overtightened lug nuts. Her vehicle looks like a Toyota Corolla i.e. 76ftlbs

    • @soilmanted
      @soilmanted 7 років тому +1

      Manuals that come with torque wrenches say to measure torque when the mating surfaces have a light coat of oil. Many vehicle owners manuals and service manuals specifically say measure the torque with oil on the 2 mating surfaces, the bottom of the bolt head or nut, and contact point on the wheel where the bottom of the bolt head or nut makes contact with the wheel. That is what my VW manual said for the lug nuts. I noticed that the Toyota manual said do NOT use oil. Honda manual made no mention. The thing is, without oil, the amount that the nut tightens in will vary quite a lot, from nut to nut, depending upon how much corrosion and fine soil there is on the mating surfaces. So one screw may be much tighter than another. Which could put flexion into the wheel. But if you use oil, every nut will tighten almost the same, as long as the torque is measured the same. So I prefer to use oil. It also makes the labor for both off and on easier. Esp oil on the threads makes getting the nut off easier because it prevents corrosion from causing the threads to seize. Oil on the threads is irrelevant as to the torque ratings (unless the threads are extremely filthy or corroded). What holds the nut from turning is the contact point between it and wheel. I've always brushed on a light coating or used my finger to place a light coating of grease. As little oil or grease as you can get to make as thin a film as you can get, does the trick. I also put a single drop on the threads of the stud, and then turn the nut on, then off, to make sure the threads on the stud are evenly covered, then back on again. I've been doing this 1000's of times over the last 50 years and never had a problem.Yes the nut will turn a bit further with oil than it will without oil. But there is no risk that you will cause the stud to elongate and weaken, and decrease in diameter at a certain point and weaken (and become likely to break next time), which is the danger of overtightening. What DOES weaken the stud is idiots tightening the nuts with power tools with misadjusted torque settings, unlubricated torque mechanism, or with cheap tools that don't even have a torque setting mechanism. With a spec of 76 foot pounds anything between 72 and 80 ft pounds is OK. But hold the trigger down for only a fraction of a second too long on a power wrench without a torque setting, and the nut can easily end up getting tightened to 120 ft pounds. Also, one nut may be 120 ft pounds and another may be 76, causing the wheel to flex and not lie flat against the disk or drum.

      I removed the section about supporting the car on the pinchweld using 2 or more jack stands. The weight of the car should rest on the reinforced part of the pinchweld. The rest of the pinchweld may not be strong enough to support the weight of the car safely., even if the weight is distributed along a long length of pinchweld. Can you find something else that is unsafe?

    • @soilmanted
      @soilmanted 6 років тому

      The place to support a car, either the 2 front wheels or the 2 rear wheels, are the support points recommended by the manufacturer. These are usually reinforced areas of the pinch weld just behind the front wheels and just ahead of the rear wheels. Repeat: they are indeed on the pinchweld, but are the 4 spots where the pinchwelds are reinforced. You can use the supplied emergency scissor jack on one of these points, use a pair of jack stands on the 2 front points, or the 2 rears points, or all 4, or you can use the 4 lift pads of a hydraulic lift of the type found in a professional shop, on all 4 support points. You may be correct regarding using a piece of lumber to distribute the car's weight the across a large length of pinchweld, but you are saying something that is exactly the same as what I said earlier, and that removed - after you objected to it. So you are contradicting yourself. I removed it because, while it is probably safe and effective, I am not sure that inexperienced people can figure out how to do it safely.
      As far as the subframe. It depends WHERE on the subframe. To be on the safe side, I want to limit my recommendations to the manufacturer recommended spots - and they tend to be the 4 above-mentioned reinforced areas of the pinchweld, that are near the wheels, and in addition to those 4, manufacturers tend to limit their recommendations to two other spots, one spot is a place on the sub frame that is about halfway between both front wheels, that is used to lift both front wheels, and the second spot is a place near the rear of the car to lift both rear wheels (on a front-wheel drive car, usually it is a reinforced area of the body). Lifting anywhere else requires more expertise than most car owners have, so I am going to stick to mentioning the manufacturer recommended points here.
      That said, the reinforced pinchweld areas on an older rusted car may not be safe lift points once they have acquired considerable rust, and you will need some expertise as to where to lift, or support, the car, instead.
      I recently rotated the tires on my 2015 Honda Fit. The front point for lifting both front wheels was quite far from the front of the car, and only about 5 inches off the ground, plus between it and the front of the car there were several pieces of plastic shrouding that were only abuot 4.5 inches off the ground, making it rather a PIA to get the jack under the car and its lift pad lined up with the car's lift point. The smallest, lowest rolling jack I could find would not fit under the car so that its lift pad would reach the car's lift point! I had to first drive the car up onto ramps (about 1.5 inches high) in order to get the rolling jack under the car! And then, there wasn't a lot of space for the first few up-and-down motions of the jack's lift lever. Later, I had to remember to put the ramps under the front wheels before jacking the car down. This is a front-wheel drive car: the rear of the car was very light. There was a piece of steel bar, a cylindrical bar about 3/4 inch in diameter, welded to the bottom of the spare-tire bin. This was strong enough to use to lift up both rear wheels. It is also the manufacturer's recommended lift point. The spare tire bin did not bend. But the rear of this car is very light. Engine, transaxle, even the gas tank - all are up front.

    Thanks for using jack stands. Your friend is lucky, a good friend of mine died because he didn't support his car properly and it feel on him. I don't like thinking about it but it had to be a horrible way to go so please, practice safe lifting everyone

Did Christie say hold it on with one toe I am dying laughing. I think it's great that you actually change the tire with no arms in having the lake adjustment I was complaining because I have you no issue with one leg being shorter but watching you always makes me feel like a big whiny a** baby so I've learned to stop complaining and just take it like a beast so thanks for the encouragement

    I see that you are good at being independent, but maybe I can suggest that you can get different size blocks that you can put at the end, of the lug wrench for leverage, and then you can stand and bounce that will make it easier, to bust loose the lugs for you.

    If you're really going to prepare to do this along side the road (you totally should) the tools would be pretty simple to modify to make it a lot easier. Sawing the unneeded sockets off the wrench and adding grips would be a good start. A pedal in place of the bar on the Jack would be another.
    In any case, great work.

    Now I am really ashamed to say that I don't know how to change a tire. I've only seen a couple of her videos and she is doing things that I can't do with my hands. I can't draw, paint, or change a tire. I really have to work on giving excuses. She took all the excuses away. Great job!

    Awesome job! It might help putting the handbrake/e-brake on to prevent the rear tires from turning. Also have the shifter in park if doing the front tires.
    I prefer to use a telescopic socket wrench for the bolts but it might not be the ideal tool for armless person. Regards!
