  • “As a kid I always wanted to do film music really, that’s what I wanted to do, but I didn’t really know how to get into it. And it just sort of happened by accident…”
Andy Gray is a film composer, sound designer and musician with a storied history in the music production industry.
Before his time as a film composer and sound designer in his own right, Andy made a name for himself in the 90s dance music scene as a remixer, programmer and producer, reimagining works by major artists such as U2, Madonna, Korn and The Dave Matthews Band.
Through a collaboration with Paul Oakenfold, Andy moved into the world of music-to-picture, something that long been his dream. After working with Oakenfold and Christopher Young on the soundtrack to 2001 action thriller Swordfish, Andy continued to work on original scores and remixes that have formed the soundtrack to massive box office hits such as Collateral, The Bourne Identity, Get Carter, Zoolander and The Matrix.
Surrounded by keyboards and an eye-catching wall of modular, its immediately clear Andy is a true synth aficionado - no surprises then that his talents for sound design have been sought after by some of the biggest names in synth pop, new wave and dance music, working with icons like Gary Numan and Human League.
We sat down with Andy to talk about his career as both a remixer and composer, how he writes music to “sell a story” and how the Ferrofish A32pro, RME 12Mic and MADIface Pro form the recording foundation of his vast collection of synths, guitars and microphones.

Great video! I'm really curious, which control surface Andy is using? Is it Avid Eucontrol? I'm using Steinberg Nuendo and looking for something to use that's not the hefty Yamaha Nuage.

He has a bunch of controllers, but the big ones with the iPads and faders are Avid S1's + an Avid Dock.
