This was actually a pretty accurate take on war in Ukraine by Geography now. I wasn't expecting this since they typically never mentions any politics in their videos.

This piece with Crimean Tatars is inaccurate. It is true that nobody really cared about Crimean natives (Crimean Tatars, Crimean Karaites, Krymchaks) before, but now Ukraine recognizes these three as indigenous nations and promotes their cultures and languages. Many Crimean Tatars fled to mainland Ukraine during the annexation of Crimea, which clearly shows whom they generally support. Russia has jailed many Crimean Tatars on the basis of "terrorism" just because they were somehow related to Mejlis of Crimean Tatars (the representative body of Crimean Tatars in Ukrainian government which was outlawed by Russia). The ICJ ruled that Russia must lift the ban on Mejlis but they refuse. Under Russia, Crimean Tatar orthography was changed from its original Latin alphabet to the Soviet-era Cyrillic alphabet. Heck, Russia doesn't even recognize the deportations of Crimean Tatars and has never formally apologized!

In fact, Russia has ties with Rome. In the second half of the XIV century, the first sovereign of All Rus Ivan III married the niece of the last Byzantine emperor. And just after that, Russia had a symbolism with a double-headed eagle that came from Byzantium. By the way, this is where the theory of "Moscow is the third Rome" came from.

Honestly, native Russians who lived on the territory of where Moscow will be established, are not even East Slavs. They belong to the Finno-Ugric tribes, which is where some of the Russian language comes from.

Most of russian words are slavic or Anglicism(like english word by Cyrillic letters). But Ukrainian language mostly has it's own words and much less Anglicism, that just means that our language more rich and more old. There are many more arguments about that...

Wow, if this shows complexity of the conflict and some actual reasons for the war for Russia then it only proves to me that Russia had no actual and justifiable reason to start this war. 90% of things said here by Russian character are no reason for a war whatsoever. The only things that could be solid reasons for going military would be if there was actual persecution of the Russian minority in Ukraine, but I mean really tough ones like putting in jail for no reason, beatings, not allowing work, education, use of social services, speak the language. There is nothing like that documented or at very least Russians didn't bother sharing them with the world. All they did is talk about it. I don't believe in them cause I have Ukrainian colleagues who actually are Russian speakers and no one cared about it, not before the war. Half of Kiev were Russian-speaking people ( and it doesn't matter if it was actually 20% not half, that is still a lot). The other reason would be if there was a real threat that Russia would be attacked. There was no such threat, who would have attacked them? Economically weak Ukraine with almost no army? That would be the "greatest" invasion ever. NATO? if they wanted to do it they would do in the 90s when Russia was really in deep shit. Look at the business western governments were dealing with Russia, western investments in that country. So, these are just made up or born in paranoic minds. All the rest of the bullshit like historical reasons, political mistakes.... if wars should start based on those then the whole world should be on fire. Well, maybe not world but Europe for sure as there is hardly a place in Europe that didn't belong to other countries before. Following such logic Poland would be legitimate to take back Moscow because it was theirs before. It was just occupied for 2 years but who said there is a limit. There are still thousands of Poles in Siberia, Kazakhstan and who knows were who were taken there by force and were actually beaten, arrested for no reason, forbidden to speak their language and with no civil rights at all. There are no polish missiles flying there, are there? There is a lot talk that Polish minorities rights are not really respected in Germany or Sweden but there are no polish missiles flying there neither. Start minding your own business Russia, like your "apolitical" citizens do. World would be so much better place if you did.

Personally, I think that the current Russian government is communists, not Nazis. Look, almost all of their political leadership is a legacy of the Soviet system and Communist party. Russia, even on paper, recognizes itself as the successor to the USSR. For example, they still celebrate February 23 as the Day of the Armed Forces (Red Army date). Accordingly, the President of Russia is also a former KGB officer, which is reflected in the level of freedom of speech, severe censorship and a large number of people imprisoned for political reasons, just like in former USSR. An echo of the Soviet past is also their dislike of America and NATO, like Cold War is still going on. Therefore, one can describe them as neo-communists or neo-bolsheviks.

Besides, i disagree with the idea that the Russian government is nationalist. Russia, as a federation, have are many different nationalities (Chechens, Buryats, Bashkirs, etc.). In addition, Russia have a visa-free regime with the countries of Central Asia, which gives a flow of a large number of migrants. In addition, these ethnic minorities and migrants have a higher birth rate than the native Russian population, which is not of particular concern to the government.

One of Putins advisors: Alexander Dugin, wanted a Soviet empire from Dublin to Vladivostok across the Eurasian continent. So it is more imperial ideals and taking over different ethnicities and adhere them to the nation. He is very anti-communist.
