Harvesting LITHOPS SEED CAPSULES using WATER Methods & DRY Method (AUGUST 2021)

- It is late August/late Summer 2021...
I AM HARVESTING THE NOW VERY RIPE AND VERY DRIED SEED CAPSULES OFF MY LITHOPS PLANTS.
So since I bought them they are starting to settle into their new indoor house environment under my grow lights, but they are still a little rough round the edges, but they are okay!
Any new Lithops I buy do really settle well after a couple of years and appearance improves.
The many seed capsules have been maturing for at least a year (or more).
(The Lithops already came with the seed capsules when I purchased them a little while back).
So, it is Late Summer 2021 and I am processing the seed using a few methods, which if you're a beginner, should help you out...
the water methods and the dry method of collecting (harvesting) Lithops seeds.

Yes, I like to touch the Lithops as they feel so smooth!🤣 but I refrain from just touching the actual 'windows' now, just as a precaution, some are apparently more sensitive than others, but I've never noticed any radical reaction over time before I came across this information, but it's just something I adopt now incase it's working 🤣

Wow, this is the most comprehensive and very concise video I’ve seen about harvesting lithops seeds. 😃 I like how you showed and how clearly you explained the different methods. 👍🏼 Oh no, so those are how the seed capsules look like… I’m afraid I’ve been throwing them away all these years. I thought they were just dried unpollinated flowers. 🥴🤦🏻♀️ That’s so cool how they look when wet. They look beautiful like a flower. Great video, Claire. Perhaps try growing them indoors, on a window sill even, which might be a bit easier on the Lithops, than growing them out in the harsh desert sun. You definitely have the extreme low humidity air, which is what they love.

@@CactusCove yes, during summer, I have them in shade. They don’t burn but they get petrified in the dry heat. 😣 I still have 2 alive. Haha. But yes, I keep trying until I crack the lithops code. 😉

Very intresting video, I liked the water method-opened seed pod looked really beautiful and remind me of fresh fig:) So many seeds-happy growing. I once bought lithops seeds but none germinated:( A few of mine are in buds or just finished flowering but of course flowers didn't open at the same time so i couldnt pollinate-typical hahaha. beautiful collection of living stones!

Sorry if you covered this- but are liths self-pollinators or how do I know if I have a male or female plant? Do the flowers just make seed pods after they die back?
Lithops are not self fertile or self pollinating.
A Lithops in flower will need to be cross pollinated with another seperate lithops plant that is in flower.
The flowers on one plant cannot pollinate itself.
If a flower has not been successfully pollinated, the flower will die back in due course and it will not produce any seed pods.
So unless your Lithops plants are exposed outside then the bees and insects etc will have a part to play in helping cross pollinate the flowers, however if you cultivate your plants indoors, like I do, then you will need to hand pollinate the flowers.
When a lithops has been successfully pollinated, the seed pods can, in some situations, take upto a year to ripen.

It's really nice to be able to harvest lithops seeds. I'm just learning to seed, hehe. How many years does it take for lithops to flower and harvest their seeds?
Many Lithops need to be about 3 years old, before they will be mature enough to start flowering for the first time.
So growing from seed means you will need to wait a few years before seeing flowers.
When Lithops flowers are pollinated, if successful, a seed capsule will develop, it can take about a year - so into the next season, for it mature and turn brown and woody. That's when the seeds are ready.
As mentioned in my video, the seeds are best left 2 months or much more after harvesting time, for them to give better germination rates because the seeds do better as they age. They are designed to wait around for months in habitat for the rains to arrive so they stay viable for a long time!

It is called a Lithops (commonly called Living Stones). They mimic the gravels and stones and colours of their natural habitat.

Hi when should I give my lithops a good watering
If you are in the Northern Hemisphere, like me, and your Lithops have already absorbed their former leaves/heads then you can water them now, especially in this hot weather.
As long as they are not absorbing their old leaves then you're fine to water, during growing season.
You'll notice them swell up nicely.

@@PhilCollectibles I mean the body or the heads of the Lithops will swell up after watering, after a day or so they'll look fuller.
Just ensure you let your growing medium dry out fully before watering again as they are susceptible to rot.
Have you considered crossbreeding lithops?
I've had 2 different Lithops bloom this year, but a week apart, I tried to cross pollinate anyway regardless - the pollen might have dried up on too soon, but I'll wait to see if they take.
