The men who were with Gunther talked about how eerie it was when all the gunfire began to go silent at the moment his body hit the ground.

Hi Rob. Gunther's story is very sad. I remember hearing his story, but it saddens me each time I hear of it. I agree, his death was needless. Right at the last minute also :(.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing. Take care and have a nice weekend!

Still can't believe I found a big shell piece when we were there. This story makes this find extra special for me. It sits on my shelf proudly.

Love your videos. They're really informative. Could we get a video about the 36th Ulster Division and possibly more Irish units that fought during WW1. I don't see an awful lot about those men. I only know parts about it as I live down the road from the Somme Centre in County Down.

Nice take on his story. I can understand what he went thru being of German ancestry. I really do think that what is so overlooked in WWI history is exactly how much the American German, Austrian and Hungarian populations were so deeply rooted to helping their home countries before the U.S. entered the war. They proudly held fundraisers to send supplies and money back to Europe. The German ambassador made the rounds all across the country. He spent a week here where I live in Johnstown, Pa. Was given the red carpet treatment. Even though we were supposed to be neutral and sending arms. Everybody knows that backstory. But, my point being that members of my German family were torn when it came to serving because of having close relatives also serving in the service of the Central Powers and their families still living there. My grandfathers cousin served and later took his own life in the 20's because of it. During both WWI & WWII my grandfathers family sent care packages back to Germany to help them out. Don't know how they managed to have them get thru - but they did. Someday when I get the time - I would love to write a book about this whole subject. Years ago, I wrote up a post about one such fundraiser my family was very involved in held here in 1916. Less than a year before we entered the war: johnstownhistory.blogspot.com/2012/12/war-charity-bazar-1916.html.

You're right, John Parr (first British casualty) and George Ellison (last British casualty) are both buried at St Symphorien Cemetery. It's a fascinating cemetery actually. George Price the last Commonwealth Casualty (a Canadian) is buried there and Lieutenant Maurice Dease (the first VC of the war).

So sad...if they knew the war was going to end at 11am, why didn't they just tell the soldiers to stand down for awhile?
Edit: omg, they did! His mistake...even sadder. RIP
