Have been told 24 is horrific and the offender often passes out even before 24. If 48 didn't kill him, I might suspect he wished he would die trying to endure that caning. Tbh caning a child as a discipline action may make a child more rebellious if you keep on caning them because they are used to the pain already. The pain to them is nothing since they are used to it. I was cane a lot when I was younger like my parents would tie a few canes together and hit me because I didn’t get full marks for my spelling. Did it work? No, did I ever get full marks for my spelling from caning, no, so I got hit for nothing. Also, I actually see nothing good about caning, it makes your kids scared as you and afraid to make mistakes, growing up they might think I must be perfect, I cannot make mistakes. This will make a big impact on their physical and mental health

I think the problem with canning is children not knowing why or what they are canned for. Singaporeans who use cane often failed to explain to their children what they have done wrong, which leads to more rebellious nature for some. The lack of communication is often the problem that is hard to overcome because of our asian cultures.

it depends on "how", "when" and at "under what circumstances" canning are used. Canning in itself is just a blunt brute action. however, if it is used appropriately and only at the last resort (at home when disciplining children), it serves as a great deterrence, warning and consequence management (lesson) for a child's growing up journey.

@@PatheticTV in my opinion, it depends on the scenario.
If you're caning a child for every little mistake(eg. Bad grades, break something, staying out late without informing parents) can(and in some cases, have) result in a more rebellious attitude growing up, and can produce negative results.
But there are cases where I see caning as necessary. Such as doing things that REALLY crosses the line(eg. Stealing/shoplifting, underage smoking, drugs/substance abuse, etc.).
I am of the belief that "every action has its consequences", and when a child makes a mistake, it is up to us parents to meet out the appropriate punishment. Violent punishments should always be a last resort, a "nuclear deterrent", so to speak. There are other ways to instill discipline without using violent means(eg. Doing push-ups, holding buckets filled with water(appropriate for each age range, of course), holding half-squat position with a bag of rice, etc.)
tl;dr: I believe in using the "carrot-stick" method to teach children. Use gifts as an incentive to drive them to do better, and meet out the appropriate punishments when they do something wrong. You don't have to punish them if they fail their exams, but be firm enough to teach them that some things in life must be earned.

    • @Gehslol
      @Gehslol 3 роки тому +1

yaa. I think physical punishment can be accepted if parents do their due RESPONSIBILITY to assess if the child even deserves physical punishment in the first place and then to communicate that clearly. The problem most people have with physical punishment is because alot of parents inflict physical punishment as a result of feeling angry, and without ever separating their anger from the punishment...

When an adult is not competent in well communication, poor management of emotion, don't put in enough time in the above with the child... When talking needs skills, time and effort. Not everyone has it or wants to grow in it. One of the fastest way to get things done - fear and pain. Learn the lesson or not? I think most will only remember the pain and experience of caning but not the reason why one got caned. They could have a vague idea from the adult eg- you were naughty, not listening, stubborn and don't follow my rule etc but these, could actually be resolved with communication and understanding the reason behind all these- but again, it takes up time, effort and skills.

The most primeval and organic feeling for a human being is physical feeling. The punish someone physically, with the pretext and undertone that they UNDERSTAND AND KNOW why they are being punished this way and that they should not do the crime again, is an amazing way to deter people from committing crimes and become better individuals. This is why caning is so effective, because it is the most natural way of crime deterrence for human beings, which are also animals. It is much more effective than the over-enthusiastic and naive ways of doing things in the west and also the Scandinavian countries, where the judge shake hands with mass murderers...
Caning is actually a very smart way to deter crime, just need to make sure it is done appropriately and not abusively lah.,,

My mom used to cane me and she would pull my hair and slap me and hit my head onto the glass panel in the toilets. This was usually because of me feeling too stressed and playing too much but I did maintain normal scores above 85. She was quite abusive since my younger brother was naughty and she loved to vent out her anger on me. It's a shame some parents still find it so normal to cane and abuse their children. Why waste 10,20,30 minutes to talk or cajole or reason with them when you can just whip out a cane? As someone who have been subjected to hours of punishment at one go (caning, belting, chilli in mouth, kneeling...) I can tell you that it does nothing except push me further and further away. Once I'm big enough, strong enough, nothing can get thru to me anymore. So the answer to whether to cane or not, the answer is a big fat NO!

So many ppl here who were caned inappropriately as a child now go to the extremes of "yes i will definitely cane my child because i turned out well" or "no! Because I experienced it and will nv let my child experience it."
If caning is really ineffective as a disciplinary measure, you can ask any Singaporean if they would like this punishment taken away from law.
Teachers complain that the children these days are very difficult, have no manners and are disrespectful towards authority. Do you know why? Because parents these days are advised not to cane their child at home!
However, some children really need to be caned or they will never know how much harm/danger they are putting others and themselves in through their thoughtless behaviour. When the consequence of doing wrong things is just a warning and counselling, and if this has been done countless times with no improvement, something else needs to be done.
Caning should only be done after you have helped your child acquire the skills he needs to stop an undesirable behaviour. When you see that he's able to behave himself with some or no reminders, praise him and tell him to keep it up. Then discuss with him the consequences if he chooses to behave otherwise.
Caning should be done objectively and without anger. So for example, if the targeted undesirable behaviour is how your child tends to let go of your hand and run off by himself, and he chooses to do that after you have taught him not to and discussed the consequences, then you should go home and calmly carry out the agreed upon consequence. You will find that your child will not resent you that much because he already knew what the consequences were beforehand and he chose to still misbehave anyway. What you will also find is that your child knows he can't mess with you, that you will do what you say. He will also think twice before doing something he knows is not right.
So i do hope that parents don't just eliminate caning as a punishment. It is not wrong to cane your child unless you're abusing it.

    Canning doesn’t solve anything.
It just makes the situation worse. Sit down with your kid and have a chat with them, understand where they are coming from. They need a friend and not a parent in these situations. Canning doesn’t make them respect you, it only makes them scared of you which is an incredibly bad thing as you are letting them know that they can’t be open and honest with you.

Sit down with an 8 year old and explain why they shouldn’t demand whatever they want and see how that works.
I’ve seen this approach in action.. it basically boils down to giving in to a child’s demands. As a child, the ONLY thing I feared was a spanking. And I was in all advanced classes, etc, so I wasn’t just a dummy. My parents “explained” a lot of stuff to me. But I was a CHILD. I wanted whatever I wanted and was smart enough to get it by conniving or playing them. Right up until someone mentioned “spanking”… then the games stopped. No way I wanted my parents smacking my little butt!

Adults can understand rules and take responsibility for their actions and caning as a punishment might make sense and even be better than long solitary and way better than informal punishment the guards enforce in more backwards countries. Or perhaps they are the best people to form an opinion on it, they were the ones to experience it and the majority still feel like it was necessary, that says something, and I don't believe it can entirely be thrown in with the notion that they have been conditioned, surely if it was an entirely negative event in their lives people would be for the most part against the practice? That doesn't seem to be the case.
This is compounded by the fact that most countries have not outlawed the use of "corporal" punishment in terms of parents with their children in certain scenarios, "smacking" for one. The use of implements such as a cane is for the most part banned however.

    • @wynngoes
      @wynngoes 3 роки тому

@@harrier331 Perhaps so. It makes sense at first glance that if they got through being caned without significant trauma and are decent people now, maybe there is merit to it. In fact, studies on corporal punishment have found that it has one positive outcome - compliance. It makes children do what you say in that moment. There are several negative outcomes, however, the biggest being the strain on parent-child relationships.
Anyways, I do believe that when such physical discipline is widely practiced in a society, it normalises it and people will feel like it's just a regular part of growing up. It's easier to believe that you deserved that punishment and that your parents meant well. After all, children are dependent on their parents and will find ways to cope with all kinds of parenting imperfections. There's a saying that goes: "A child that is abused by their parents will not stop loving their parents. They will stop loving themselves." At the same time, there may be some resentment towards their parents too, and certain emotional needs may be left unmet.
Importantly, now that we have better access to parenting skills and understanding of the needs of children, there are surely more effective ways to set boundaries, and do less harm.

American incarceration is cruel and unusual punishment so that for some offenders especially first time male offenders we should reduce the time of incarceration when caning is used as punishment. Some criminals must remain incarcerated for the safety of society but other criminals could benefit from the pain and humiliation of caning to deter recidivism. We should experiment with the caning punishment for male offenders only, even offering caning as an option to longer incarceration. Prisons in the United States are dangerous unsanitary places and daily prison life is enough to drive offenders insane. Most prisoners will be released at the end of their sentences. Recidivism is high among American prisoners, so incarceration is not deterring crime. In most American prisons there are few efforts at rehabilitation. On the other hand, depending upon the crime committed caning could be very effective as the Singapore experience shows at deterring crime and recidivism. Of course in the United States we have financial reasons for expanding the prison population in both the private for profit and publicly funded prisons.

Caning is necessary as a deterrent for crimes committed. That's very clear, no ambiguity about it.
To keep a standard of behaviour and norm in society - you require law for boundaries breached.
It's only when people blurred the lines and changes the law in the name of humanity that the law loses its meaning (of what it's supposed to do) and became law based on people's views and their perception of what the law should be. The world then dictates what the law should be which is sad.
One must learnt that there are consequences to their actions and taught to take responsibility for their actions/crimes.
Caning in family should be discussed separately.

Actress Chantalle Ng was also caned badly by her dad Huang Yiliang, the former actor until she got hospitalised to skipping tuition classes and lying to her tuition teacher, but he said the canes are only used for scare tactics, so good at denying his fault with the law! 😡

I'm Chinese American, and my parents would slap me once in a blue moon when I was in elementary school. After a few years of living in the US they turned away from corporal punishment completely, probably due to the influence of Western values. I wish they caned or slapped me more to be honest. It would have made me a lot more disciplined and a lot more successful as a person. I don't really understand why Western society is so against corporal punishment.

      Cane in a blue moon?
That is already a red-alert on my side: It indicates possible abuse and your family may have emotional issues at that time (perhaps trying to vent anger?)

I think judicial corporal punishment would be a good de truant to crime for adults, but i think they should use a paddle instead of a Cain so you are not left with peranate damage.

Even paddles can cause permanent wounds.
It's an old example, in the Orient, a paddle-type falcon was used to hit people on the butt or waist. However, they were bleed since only 1 or 2 units, usually permanent scars remain.

An American I knew used a belt rather than a cane. A cane should be used for deterrence. It is a different kind of cane that is used for children as they are used in love to discipline n teach children that what you sow you also reap in life, especially after warning has been given. A caning is unforgettable if after the caning there is counselling by the parent or teacher to the child.

I don't cane my kids, because I am being cane many times when I was a child.I feel the pain on my back, and don't want my kids to suffer .When my kids do something wrong, just explain (some time might raise up my voice). Many young guys involved in gang fights, think that using force to make the other party feel pain would solve the problems. This is what parents always did .

If your kid is doing something wrong, pointing a gun in their head won't make them better.
Physical punishment has either no, or very negative consequences. Beating kids should be viewed the same way as beating wives.

I don't recall the cane ever being commonly used to punish in the States. Schools seemed to rely on the wood paddle and at home there were spanking paddles and the belt. Were you caned (spanked) growing up?

@@marcoslopez127 : I imagine that was done with a whip or strap, not a cane. Do you think punishment is more effective if given bare back than across the butt? I know what a paddling on butt felt like and it worked effectively for me. Most schools now don't spank, but suspect some parents still do, through that isn't talked about as much now. Growing up if you misbehaved did you dad spank/whip your bottom?

I don’t think that the instrument matters as much as controlling the act while not letting it turn into abuse. I would be hit either with the hand or belt but not across the face. Usually the legs is where we got hit.

    • @davidhuff4562
      @davidhuff4562 2 роки тому

@@marcoslopez127 : Correct, implement doesn't matter. Abuse should never be tolerated. A belt spanking obviously is more painful than the hand. The face should be 'off-limits.' Spanking should be confined to the butt region that includes the back of the thigh adjacent to the lower 'sit spot' of the butt where you say you usually got smacked.

by caning ur kids, it doesn't solve the issue.
It only starts to add "fear"/"anger" in them lol
ONLY by talking it out about the main issue with ur kids, mention the consequences of the issue and explain. in a way to let ur kids have a better perspective about what's wrong with this or that.
^ if u don't have the patience for this, must as well don't give birth to kids in the first place really.

Caning officers are very fit. How are offenders grouped whenever it’s time for their punishment? For example, is it possible for a 26 yr old caning officer to whip a 45 yr old inmate? That seems strange to me.

The practice of judicial caning of inmates is no longer practiced in India. But corporeal punishment of children is common in India, especially by parents to control unruly ones. Teachers, in earlier times, used to physically punish students for naughty behaviour. But this has almost vanished now. Teachers found physically harming students, like slapping or pinching or shouting abuses at them, have been suspended from their jobs. In some serious cases the teachers loose their jobs. The British system of caning students may have originated from their notorious public schools, whose headmasters were depicted as sadists in numerous novels. Physical punishment in no way helps prevent a child from becoming a criminal later on in life. Singapore has to reform its laws and stop this practice in jails. Psychiatric and psychological counselling of inmates should replace this brutality.
