Star pistols are often used in movies as stand ins for 1911s because they look similar. Also it used to be much easier to modify 9mm guns to fire blanks for film. The .45 was apparently not easy to convert into a blank gun. Also there were a lot more Star model Bs and similar spanish guns than1911s. Remember, back in the day only a few companies made 1911s. Today they are everywhere.
