I use a 3D modeling software called "Wing-it™." It came pre-installed on my VERY personal computer, cir 1960's. Lol.
In all seriousness... Great project and resource intro Micheal. Thanks!

C.A.D. ... Cardboard Assisted Design.... thats looking pretty cool. I personally dig the Handheld Radio holder, nice touch. I know this is just a template, but I'll say, ... make the front of it match up to the existing console a little better? (See something getting dropped and disappearing forever. ... or, incorporate the Shifter console into it? (Though that might add a level of difficulty).

Another alternative to transferring your dimensions to real life is a table of offsets. You just plot critical points of the design using XYZ coordinates. It's a really common trick that's been used for a long time in boat building to scale up a drawing to the size of a boat

I work with building car interiors for work cars and its super fun to see how you work, how your mindset are and its fun to learn techniques that i haven't thought of:) great work:)

Michael, another fun project! Just make sure it all fits when you enlarged the center console and that you aren't in conflict with the new platform.

Remember to provide adequate ventilation for the electronics you are planning to stuff in that console. Many inverters will have have minimum clearance requirements for their passive cooling to work properly. You certainly want to be sure that something like an inverter or amplifier has builtin overheating protection.
Another thought is to make sure you are running large enough gauge wire to the console to power all the electronics. You will want to add all the maximum amperages together and add 15% to 20% for wiggle room to determine what gauge of wire to to the console. I would then use covered bus bars for the positive and negative connections for the electronics. You also need a fuse on that main power wire.
I am looking forward to seeing what considerations you make and how your final design comes out. I am about to start designing and building a new center console for my '75 Ramcharger.

Very good points! In this case, no inverter, and I’m checking the designs and ventilation with RedArc 👊🏼👍🏼

Michael, the hardest part with these 3d programs is learning how to use them and that can take weeks or months... I have tried several (SketchUp for one) and given up and gone back to a pen/pencil, ruler and note pad, I can make something far quicker than the time it takes to learn how to use these programs.
Don't get me wrong I'm all for technology and stuff but when it takes so long to learn how to use these programs for basic things like a box with a lid (which is what a centre console actually is)... I'd rather get my tape measure out and draw it and then take measurements and then get to work. You not only have to learn one program but as you said you then had to pay for yet another program to be able to print it on paper .... seems to me a long way about doing something simple..old school wins for me.
Straight away when you fit your cardboard model into the cruiser I note that the armrest is soo much further back than where it would normally be.

It will come forward 3 inches when final. Pen and paper works!

Hey Michael, I think it was mentioned but make sure you can extend your bed platform out still... Or maybe you might just have to cute a notch out for it to full extend as that console is longer and taller than the stock. Seriously love seeing you make things for the 80 !!! Stay safe and well

3 part video. What's the bet its at least 6 videos? :) I'm excited to hear parnels take on this design. I like the sunglass holder on the front there. I read a comment about sliding armrest, that would be nice. Another 9ption could be like the Ford trucks have that flip down table thing... In my mind there is a set of sliders for front and back of the very top, and a hinge that would allow it to fold forward as a small table - someplace to put your fast food at a rest stop, in the rain.

I have thought about making the armrest like it is in my FJ...flip down when needed would solve the E-brake access issue.

    Hi ob8423 from Brazil here!!!
Nice work, i`m going with a similar process in my FJ40 restoration..
Would be nice to have a wireless charger mounted in, just drop the phone and its charging..
For the car stereo, i would go with one that has wireless Apple Car Play... Check the Kenwood DMX 1057.
    Best Regards

Kenwood double din for a stereo. I like the projects. You could add a reading/map light to the back and use while in bed.

If you are not planning on "flipping" your second row seats up it will be fine...however seems like once is in place you will loose that second row functionality because the back side will be in the way.

I would fit a centrale console fridge for drinks as your fridge at the back won’t be able to hold too many of those… redarc should go at the back… this is, of course my opinion. I have a 100 serie and I use my central fridge all the time

    • @OverlandBound
      @OverlandBound  3 роки тому

I hear that! The RedArc cannot go in the back due to wire gage a run requirements per RedArc, which was the main reason to build a new center console.
