I've sewn for years (since my late 20s) as a hobby, and I'll tell you that the first indication of a cheap garment is buttons that haven't been sewn on properly. That's something my mother taught me 40 years ago. You can sew them on better if you choose, but it really should be a caveat for what else might be poorly done (like bad seams, or lapels that don't lay flat when they should, etc.). When I was young (and poor), I used to think ''expensive'' meant ''quality'' -- or a certain brand name or designer line was indicative of quality. I was wrong on all counts. I'd encourage any woman, no matter what age, to watch a few UA-cam videos on some basics of sewing. You'll learn how a properly done garment is SUPPOSED to look, feel, and fit, even if you have no interest in sewing. When you've got those basics down, you'll able to evaluate your purchases before you waste your hard-earned $$.

I agree...as a general rule, any button that doesn't have a purpose or a responding button hole should be removed. You'll be surprised what a difference that makes, especially with double breasted buttons that land about where your nipples would be...the exception is: I don't always remove superfluous buttons from casualjacket/blazer sleeves...but then again those jackets are usually less expensive. Also, be aware of the cheapening affects of trims, laces, bling, etc. Even designers can go overboard with these, but adjust according to your personal style. For example the now passe trend for putting rhinestones on the pockets of jeans tends to do nothing more than make your butt look big, unless thats what you are going for, of course. Its almost never elegant to overtly draw attention to your back side. But it can be gogeous if done subtlely. For example, JLo's wardrobe in the movie Shall We Dance or Pippa's bridesmaids gown at Katherine and Prince William's wedding. Labels and logos can be fun, but rarely elegant, it doesn't matter if your T-shirt cost $100, if it makes you look like a walking instagram for the brand. The jokes on you because you paid them to advertize their stuff. Last but not least, look closely at yourself in the mirror. Does the garment wear you or do you wear the garment? What does that mean? Are others going to notice you or your clothes. To look elegant your clothes shouldbe appropriate fir the occasion,as well as,. enhance your features, coloring, body type, and personality and work effectively together to present the most actractive version of you. You should feel comfortable and look and feel like your best self when you wear them. YOU are what the world wants and needs to see, so always strive to develop an evolving personalized wardrobe that expresses and enhances the unique beauty of who you are..that's the definition of style.😁

@@s.k.3483 Well said! And so true! For example, when I was in 3rd grade, my mother removed a pinned-on bow from the collar of a mail-order dress I was to wear for Christmas. Certainly not an expensive dress, but the bow made it LOOK cheap; removing it made it look classic. I know that's a tiny thing, but that simple trick makes a difference. As far a logos -- don't even get me started. I was in my 20s in the 1980s when all that started. I NEVER buy a handbag with an obvious logo. I think it's vulgar and in bad taste -- and if you study the looks of wealthy women and what they wear (I'm talking women who have had serious money in their families for generations), you'll usually find they never wear logos. They don't even wear tags in their garments so that smooth line isn't interrupted. Every time you purchase a handbag with an expensive logo, you should ask yourself: Would I buy this if it didn't have this big status sign? or am I buying it because I want everyone to know it's expensive? Something to think about, ladies. 😉

My first video I’ve ever seen of hers and yeah same here. She kept mentioning how expensive other things were (tops at $60 how that was ‘so expensive’) but I noticed never mentioned prices of lily silk despite half the video being about it.
Upon googling, it’s because the top she’s wearing is $90.
“Now keep in mind there are sales!” Yeah because you know your subscribers would freak out at the prices, it’s why she doesn’t mention them.

She's a fraud. Sorry. She's getting paid to tell people a bunch of made-up nonsense, just like most of these self-described "experts" on youtube. They say "this is out of style" yet you walk into any public place and we're all wearing the same thing. It's all a creepy cult. They want you to believe they are style gurus and they're really just trying to pay their electric bills, hoping to get clicks. Wear what you like. It's funny how men have absolutely no idea that women are all looking at "what the style is" yet not one of the men care, while women go blow thousands of dollars on clothes they can't afford just to impress people who really don't care what they're wearing.

I still like ribbed items, I think it depends on the material more than the ribbing, if the color starts to fade it is way more noticeable on a ribbed sweater. Btw I have a sweater from Eileen Fisher, that should cost almost $400 and it's ribbed (I got it second hand of course). So no, ribbed does not mean cheap.

I wonder if it's specific to cotton knit ribbing? In the early aughts, cotton ribbed sweaters were EVERYWHERE and maybe it's a dated/overload thing. Plus cotton is classic for shrinking and stretching weirdly ..

If your doctor is from India or Pakistan, I promise you they will be wearing exquisite gold rings and necklaces that are "too" gold. My second promise to you is that their jewelry is not fake nor is it cheap. My doctor's jewelry is so beautiful, it will take your breath. BUT it doesn't mean that gold looks bad on everyone else too. People with warm undertones to their skin look much better with gold jewellery so this tip really can't be applied to everyone. It should be more like: Wear jewellery that matches your skins undertones to look polished ja put together.

My favorite sweater is a cashmere black ribbed v neck. I loved to watch your videos but honestly i disagree with 90% of what you say. You’re “stretchy fabrics” are not holding shape because they dont have enough Lycra. When the stretchy cotton knits first came out in the eighties they had no Lycra. They looked great when you first put them on then looked like hell as soon as you moved. Look at old footage of maddona in those turquoise stretch leggings with the saggy knees. If you are wearing jeans that stretch but dont hold there shape you are buying cheap jeans. Lycra is the best thing to ever happen to denim. Just a bit of Lycra and they fit so much better and you can sit and move around much easier and i am not referring to jeggings. As for shear blouses, they require a nice camisole. The best way to improve the look and feel of clothing it’s with proper foundations. Chiffons and georgettes are beautiful fabrics along with gauzy cottons and linens. Nothing cheap looking if worn properly.

Hi Shea. I agree with most of what you have said and am grateful for the extra tips that I did not have a clue about. You can wear cheap clothes and look good. One tip is to wear a cheaper dress with expensive shoes and/or jacket and so on and so forth. There are lots of tips as you know. It does have to be said, in my humble opinion, that I do not find Lilysilk to be reasonably priced at all. It is definitely not something I could or would buy too often. The bedding and pyjamas are lovely buy I feel as if those shirts look very frumpy and old fashioned. That is saying something because I am 68 yrs old and would not wear one. However, you look pretty in everything. Thank you so much for your video. I did enjoy it as always.

whereas polyester/nylon/acrylic/spandex kills sealife, cotton uses tremendous amount of water, and rayon produces toxic waste that poisons environment. That leaves wool I guess, but I'm sure no one likes the sheep/goat/yak/alpaca/camels shearing either... plus problems with ethical labor in third world countries. And let's not even start on leather (or fur(!). My point is that, while being concerned about those things is great your main goal should be to lower the overall consumption of clothes because there is no fully ethical fabric on the face of the planet. (Well, linen is the closest, but no one likes the wrinkles). But good quality clothes last longer and reduce the waste so I have several thrifted silk tops and feel good about it.

I think it depends on many other factors. Designer doesn't always mean better. If you know your body type and what colors suit your tone skin tone, it doesn't matter where or what brand the clothes are. This is exactly why I stick with solid colors/ neutral colors as I'm petite and can't wear bold overly bright patterns. Also big #1 that many people disregard, dress for FOR YOUR SIZE. Nothing looks cheaper than someone that wears something that doesn't compliment their actual size.

I love the look of silk, but I feel like I get too hot in certain silks. And my dry hands and nails feel like they snag the silk or silk like shirt more often. So is this the quality of the silk or just me??

Oh my gosh, I will never understand the lux knockoffs. (I'm not someone who can afford high-end ether) I'm in a lot of crafting and etsy groups, and the amount of knockoffs I see made is crazy. Just because you put the Louis Vuitton logo all over your shoes doesn't make them any better looking and it ain't fooling anyone. I think its so trashy.

Silk is high maintainance, and it bleeds during washing (silk dyes are not stable). There are forms of quality viscose / lyocell that are easier to wash and iron. I noticed that the viscose used in normal fashion is the cheap version that starts to show pilling soon. Some of the garments have nice prints so if you get them anyway, the usual H&M stuff (up to 30, 40, 50 USD) you really need to use the delicate wash on them, do not fill the machine too much and only spin lightly (or packed into a dry towel). No dryer either. But if you BUY viscose fabric they are of higher quality (or they used to be).
Cupro is a thicker viscose type fabric (they are all made from cellulose, a natural cellulose fibre is cotton or hemp). Cupro is thicker than viscose fabric and typically used in the more high end garments. It has a lot of body so it will look good for dresses or blouses.
Occasionally you will find it as fabric, it is not very common, it can resemble luxurious thick silk qualities. Soft, some body, sheen. But is better to wash, and does bleed color with every wash (that is a big problem with silk, because you canot mix it with other delicates for washing, it would bleed over to ligher or different colors. Even a red blouse can be changed if you wash it with another intense color).
Or high quality knit wear also from cotton mix (no ironing). Again viscose / lyocell fibrers are not as sturdy as cotton.
    - and _silk_ for bedding ?? I would hate to see the hot wash results on those pillow cases

The Christian Louboutin‘s have a trick to them. You can still fix them also. Take them to a cobbler and have a custom CL red vinyl bottom put on them that doesn’t scratch And scuff like the delicate painted leather they come with. And you can buy the “ walk on red” paint for the bottom to touch up in between.

I honestly hand wash the majority of my clothes that are at risk of falling apart. I hand wash half of my wardrobe and machine wash the other half. If you have a newer and advanced washing machine than handwashing isn't 100% necessary.
