I appreciate your videos. I've been a charter captain, boat owner (still own one), charter master, delivery captain for several decades and have seen so many people catch the dream. So often when they take delivery of the boat, (and sometimes I've sailed with them on their first voyage) something happens or their spirit changes and the boat becomes a floating RV that doesn't move and is really never touched again, nor do I really hear from them much again. In another case, the family worked on the boat for 2.5 years only to have it sink at its slip before their first real venture beyond a daysail. Heartbreaking. I know many of them, without the benefit of UA-cam, have gone through extreme angst with it as their boat has a for sale sign on it as it sits on the hard in the bone yard. However, some are still sailing and enjoying every journey....but they went into it with the awareness of the information you provide here. Thanks. You do the sport of sailing/yachting a great service.
100% I have seen that as well all to often. With my consulting I usually will be on the first voyage/delivery with the owners. I also bring along my members . I always see the change in their faces especially with members. We do an off shore trip, they cannot wait to get back to land and about 95% of the time they all decide not to buy a sailboat. The life of sailing full time is not at all what it is racked up to be on youtube and boat ownership is incredibly exspensive. Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment your personal experience and knowlege,
After many years of sailing smaller boats a friend and myself decided to buy an excharter 50 footer. We had growing families and wanted some space. We bought a sound ex Moorings First 501 in Saint Martin and sailed her back to the UK. We spent a bit of money fitting holding tanks and upgrading sails and rigging. Maybe we were lucky but two families had years of fun both in the UK and the med. Ok, she was worth very little at end, but we got a lot of sea miles for little money. In my seventies now I have gone full circle and day sail on a Contessa26 with my grandson.
I understand what you mean about wasting time NOT sailing. When I was a youngster I joined a local sailing club and spent many hours being taught to tie knots. I gave up and taught myself in an old clinker gaff sailing/rowing dinghy. Many years later I taught dinghy sailing to kids one summer in Bermuda. What a difference, get them out there, capsize and make it fun. Bon Voyage.
Good comments! I've been a sailor since I was a little kid, and have owned sailboats on and off for the last few decades, with the last one owned for about a decade and a half. I've owned and operated a sailing school in the Pacific Northwest, and am now a Yacht Surveyor - between these activities, I've advised an awful lot of people regarding purchasing a vessel. Most novices who are picturing jumping into sailing and shortly thereafter, crossing an ocean, won't, or shouldn't. A great path is to take lessons, buy a decent, smaller boat than you would need for an ocean crossing, and learn to sail! Maybe charter a bit, in distant destinations. See how you like it without betting the whole farm. And rather than starting with a major refit, which often ends in tears, as a novice sailor, best to start with a fully functional boat that minimally meets your 'needs'. I've met couples and young families who've spent several entire summers (or winters in a Southern Climate) out cruising on a 24 foot sailboat that they bought for a few thousand dollars, which is a WAY better investment than blowing through a couple of hundred K and never getting comfortable with the basics, with a boat that winds up turning into a 'dock Queen' that is rapidly depreciating, tied to a dock and suffering maintenance neglect in salt water. Get out there doing coastal cruising on an affordable boat. Become a proficient sailor. And any destination in the world that you'd like to cruise, there are going to be decent boats you can charter, all ready to go waiting for you to take them off the dock, for less money than one little electronics upgrade or other small project will cost on a large cruising vessel. If, after all that, you still have a hankering to go cross oceans, and the budget left for it, fill your boots, and you'll likely have a much more sensible and cost-effective approach to it than a novice boater would. It's great that you offer your subscribers the opportunity to join you on deliveries - that sort of experience can really help people understand if sailing is 'for them'...
I wonder what you think about 'sailing magic carpet'... They do the same thing, which is buying dumpsters and refitting them. Main difference is, that the guy is actually a boat builder. So they do end up with a sound vessel over a comparatively short timespan (compared to other UA-camrs). They are currently on their second one and seemed to have been sold the first one for a good price. I think its a good example of what it actually takes to do the refitting thing if you are in to that.
In "fairness" to Atticus, they started with nothing, had to work in Mexico to fund their further sailing, built a UA-cam business that enabled them to buy the nice 40-footer, prudently looked past the survey to find and repair structural problems before setting off, got a dog I suspect as a furbaby substitute for the real thing (wise), proceeded cautiously across the Atlantic. They are pretty risk-averse so it's no surprise that offshore sailing with a baby that needs medical supervision lost its appeal. They do tend to make molehills into mountains, inflating the dangers faced and accomplishments achieved, which has gotten old. Lately, wife and I have watched their channel just to confirm our expectation that they will throw in the towel. RV next?
Yeah they don't want to throw in the towel though because then Jordan has to get a real job instead of being a youtube content creator with a fat patreon.
I can't argue against anything you say, but there are different paths. I'm not crossing oceans, but i was able to get sailing for $2k. I bought an islander 30 at an auction with old sails, bad paint and a brand new motor. I've put some money into it but i get to sail and i enjoy working on it. If i were going to do blue water i would probably look at it differently, but for the coastal and offshore cruising that i do, it's worked out pretty well.
This was entertaining and informative. I've been watching, "Restoring Josephine", about a British couple who bought a wood sailboat built in 1936. They got screwed by their surveyor and have been working on that boat for years. They did a superb job of restoration, but they'd readily admit that they'd rather have spent that time sailing.
I'm a retired merchant marine captain, and while my wife and I certainly don't want a UA-cam channel, or any other job, we love the sail life and see what you're talking about daily. However, we'd never buy some of those boats you touted either, damn sure not a 'bend-a-toe'. We bought an S&S 36 and left the states a few years ago. We wouldn't give up a year or 2 of this to refit or rebuild some wreck.. and we could. We take care of anything and everything as needed. Engine work, elec., solar, fiberglass, etc. The "UA-cam sailor" is a direct result of technological advances. 99% of these guys couldn't plot a course or figure set and drift if their screens went dark lol.
15 year merchant mariner here as well. Sounds like this wants people to pay him to tell them to buy a fragile fin keel spade rudder retired charter boat. You see the boats he dogs on all over the world. You don't see a lot of the complicted fragile boats he does recomend. Yes it's true that the atlantic is ate up with these clorox bottle charter specials but that's all. I'd hate to have even a minor grounding in one of these.
@@tomhaney5186 what most people want though is a good boat to sail around the Carribean, not cross an ocean. For that, the boats he recommends would fit the bill or no? Thanks for your comments!
You are right on! UA-cam is hilarious. Love your content. I already lived the bus/homestead life that became trendy after I somewhat moved on to raise a family. Sailor at heart. Just got to do it later in life. Keep up the great content
Been following you from the beginning.... Your spot on with these channels. Odd life spent all that time with a refit only to sail about a year, and then sell. What a waste of time and money. You were brutally honest. I say buy one of the boats you mentioned and maybe add solar and batteries and upgrade the electronics and go sailing.
Dude !! I ❤❤❤ your comments. 😂😂 bikini, drama face, cry face, drama face ….. 😂😂. At last some honesty and criticism , be it other UA-camrs, boat producers, boat owners trying to selling you a piece of c…. Love it. Please continue.
the Odd Craft couple were based in Brazil and the boat market in Brazil is totally different. There are not a lot of options to buy and boats are way more expensive there. From a financial point of view in Brazil, it did made sense to buy that boat. It was actually a great deal there.
Odd crafting channel started in Brazil, where EVERYTHING is harder and more expensive, except for labor costs. That being said, their achievement was enourmous.
I agree with you for the average Joe. But Odd life wouldn't have got the views with a bavaria cruiser. And they are into the build. And they had a retractable keel and rudder. If you Price those boats they are hard to find and Way more than 160k. I dont think Atticus crew hired a capt to cross the atlantic. They had another couple with them. Riley and Elena had that super experienced woman with them when they crossed.
yeah atticus hired a capt, that was kind of the point of the vid, they do it for the content so dont follow there path unless you are trying to do it for the content
@@ChasingLatitudes I would do it without a captain! I bareboat around the bvis every year which is totally different but I'm gaining experience. I currently own an Ericson.
Yup, I laugh at youtubers that get into boats for the first time in life, start a YT channel, then start giving advice on things they've just learned. As a 62 yr. Mariner I keep seeing the blind attempting to lead the blind
I would love to hear your thoughts on Sailing Zatara ... Why them? well Keith and his friend Chris run a mentorship program that is $3000 a year and I just struggle to see the value there. Every Month they do a "Free workshop". You should sit for one of them. Although Expedition Evans didn't take the wisest choices to get to their goal but I think they are in a pretty good spot now. Brett is going to be building a hardtop this winter he is going to layup himself. At least according to their last video. I'm also curious on your thoughts on SAIL LIFE. Ava and Mads. Mads LOVES the DIY side of boats and loves making content around the DIY stuff too. So it isn't ALL about adventure for them, it is more about the project. Mads does a great job of chronicling his projects. They are currently looking for ~50ft project boat too
@@codegame027 yes, the entire gist of the class is, buy a 500k catamaran or a very old mono hull and spend 400k outfitting it. On top of that for any type of actual one on one help everything is additional, it's all pre recorded garbage
Sooo fkn happy I found your videos. I've been looking at nothing but dumpster boats. Thanks for the information! Going to go through the rest of your videos. ✌️
Everyone agrees with you regarding the financial ROI based on someone who is buying a boat with no UA-cam plan associated with it. The major factor here is that they do not make their money on the boat, but making content for their UA-cam channel. They need a fixer up as their subject matter. Sail Life (Mads) rebuilt his boat - I'm sure there is no financial sense in what he did. Their patreons and viewers paid for the boat. There is an audience for them willing to donate. I agree with you about the boat S/V ODD. I would never buy a steel boat as well.
One thing I noticed often in relation to expenses of sailing the med is that, at some point in the future there are at least two offset considerations. First is in normal over life on the land. There are expensive life food car fuel La La La which offset against the cost of living on the water for food fuel, etc. Of course it’s not exact, but it’s meaningful I suspect The second is a time of selling the boat income is derived, and hopefully enough to mitigate the original purchase price, and so the net cost is really about boat maintenance. And again, living on the land, we pay maintenance for cars refrigerators at that work replacing television and so on and so on sure the cost of different, but still, these offsets soften purchase and lifestyle decision to go with the boat. Yep, there’s not be able to simplistic, but the underline point I think it’s reasonable
Glad i came across u as soon i hope to be buying next year, was looking into a prout cat but after watching your videos can't decide. My sea experience is just kayaking and just hadn't the time to sail but next year be different and probably have about 100 th euro for something. Live in Ireland and can't believe i have never learned to sail as surround by water 😅. Keep up the good work and can't wait to talk
I really, really like your unvarnished approach to your videos. Give it to me straight, even if there may be some personal bias. My experience is that this approach to anything is valuable, even if maybe there are counter arguments. Please, keep it coming. I'm learning a looooooootttttttttt.
As a Cap, being asked or seeing some of these vessel's is scary that there even on the water. The people and the vessel, anyway great content keep it coming
I appreciate your success and charisma, and I find joy in the success of those who bravely pursue their dreams and share their experiences, even when they face criticism. While I recognize that negative critiques can be a part of the human experience and sometimes even profitable. For me, your constructive feedback was beneficial and the shade thrown seemed below you. Your assessment skills are excellent, and focusing on those could be more effective than speaking negatively about good humans who made bad decisions.
If you want to learn about diesels Univeral diesels are basically Kubotas. Any farm auction will have those cheap. Yanmars are a bit harder to source though. Ebay maybe? Gotta be some from sunken boats or hurricane damage. Kubotas are kinda fun.
Great job with this analysis but I would comment that it would be more fair to show what you can buy for $50,000 than $160,000. I didn’t watch this couple channel but I am almost certain they didn’t have $165,000 5y ago to buy the vessel (hence they bought this wreck for $50k). They have been retrofitting this boat over a couple years which probably means they have been spending as they were earning money. My guess anyway.
For 160k boat people: what you dont get is that they did NOT have 160k. They bought the cheap shitter and then elicited donations because people felt sorry for them and wanted to support the "little guys". If they had asked for 160k in donations to buy a nice boat people would not have given them the money. Also the repair process itself was supposed to make money by making videos on it. Its the same as with the idiot woh bought a flooded mclaren P1 that costs as much to repair as used car would cost but the revenue is in the youtube earnings from documenting the repair process.
👍🤣😂 Maybe the main goal of these people, is to build their channels? There is another one in France, sailing seabird, which bought a boat for 1Euro and are doing a refit now. For some reason, many people seem to like watching people doing a refit of their dumbster. Same with the Channel sailing GBU, they never did a crossing, now they bought a homestead and continue to make videos. For most of them, the goal seems to be to build a business and make money from their channel and subscribers, and not so much to sail around the world. Basically the attention economy. They would buy a three legged dog if that would get them the attention and views. Please make a video about the channel Spear it Animal. They are one of the worst and just started.
No reason to give this segment a new name like 'attention economy' It's been the "entertainment business" since before recorded time And yes, it's an easy way to spend 15 minutes if the people are pleasant and the project is interesting I never really watched gbu, but their homestead project is way more interesting. In fact, I think their views are now higher So yeah, Chris is acknowledging that while these are enterprise channels, they aren't actually about sailing or boat ownership
@@larkangel6593 Free Range Sailing did the same thing as GBU, only a few months earlier. Now they call themselfes Free Range living and live on a homestead. They will hopp on whatever concept to capture attention, views and donations and I admit that I am jealous of their way of living. LOL I would like to live their way but without the need for making YT-Videos and accepting donations. As I mentioned, whatever catches the attention and can be monitized will be used. In most cases it is not about the thing that they do, that keeps them afload, but the concept of marketing it as entertainment to a large audience to make an income this way.
Greets from Greece and Happy New Year. Would like to know why you consider "Spear it Animal " as one of the worst up and coming channels? Thanks in advance.
Steel is not necessarily heavier than other materials for hull structure depending on the application. Usually around 150 feet or so is the length when steel becomes the material of choice due to loading and price. But if the application is to be a moderately heavy boat, then steel can be effective because hull structure is a smaller fraction of the overall displacement. Also, weight is not the only driver for speed. In most coditions that boats actually sail in, sail area to wetted surface ratio is more a driver than displacement. Look at Ted Hood heavy displacement boats. They are heavy, but low in wetted surface, so for well accommodated boats, the Hoods sail very well in lighter airs when the new fat assed generation of cruisers can't sail because they have too much wetted surface.
Very much enjoyed your "tell it like it is" approach. Very NYC and more need to hear this. In a few cases, I was thinking more like 'Ugh, dumpster fire.' }:-\
Too right. I have been watching a channel @sailingmereweather and they are doing just this. I expect they have rich parents. Crying out for patreons to fund them. They are in a boat yard now but not before motoring to Malaysia. Doing a Mayday call and wondering why 911 doesn’t work in that part of the world. Just a car crash of a channel. Their boat is worse than any you have shown
So you bring up a good point here and the reason i just try not to watch those sailing videos anymore. I'm just back from Mexico and 35,000 nm of sailing, and learned a thing or two. But these people all make the same mistakes over and over, mistakes that could have been avoided if they had read Roth, Kritchmer, or even the Pardys. They show pictures of the woman in a thong bikini, and show a few of sailing, but never the nitty gritty of sailing. Just my 2 cents worth...
He´s champion in insulting talk about others. So because alone of that I can´t respect him and his point of view. ( Finding modern "fat ass bathtubs" "sexy" also must not be everyone's choice. - Or is he maybe sponsored by the charter-yacht brokers !? )
Project Atticus announced they are cutting back on sailing, summer sailing only it appears. Question: your thoughts on a nearly 8’ draft? Can it sail the Bahamas for a short amount of time?
No way, they are cutting back? when did they announce that ? 8 foot draft in Bahamas you will most likely ground at some point unless you stick to just the major entry and exit channels
ua-cam.com/video/PEozktgjmwg/v-deo.htmlsi=sqS-lEpBS2gaS5P4 It could always be a head fake for views but seem legitimate. If I had given to their go fund me or was a vendor giving them equipment, I would be upset. But I would also be upset if I had to sail on that boat. They looked at several great sailboats in their search and picked that thing. Someday I will get a bigger boat for ocean circumnavigation, currently have a Catalina 22 for lake sailing. Want something in the next 3 yrs, over 60’, mono, basic systems, galley with significant counter space, 3 cabin, comfortable, 200+ mile days.
I agree with everything that you said and with all the people that you've mentioned I remember saying to myself what a waste of time. People like boat repair videos they did it for the clicks
Project Atiicus, a nice middle-aged bought a Rollie Polly antique design sailboat. The wife got pregnant and was seasick 24 hours a day and he made the brilliant decision to cross the ocean at time. I wonder why the child was born with medical problems? I bet he wishes he could do that over. They seem like good parents.
I rebuilt houses and could probably swing granite counters and a fridge with a little dent in it, I've always just shit in the ocean so restroom, for me not necessarily needed but I could swing it.
Agree with many things said but there is some commercial incentive in creating a UA-cam channel … rather than just looking at the cost of the vessel. Sponsorship, donations, viewings … I guess some of them made as much money again just by doing it that way and with cash keeping coming from the channel for years to come.
It’s all about relatable, I guess it pays more to connect with naïve individuals ( plenty of those) than experienced ones when you are seeking ratings.
agree, I tried to point that out, the goal of those channels is views and that's great for them but to follow them to the path to sailboat ownership is a disaster
What this gentleman is forgetting to mention ( don’t forget he makes money with consulting and sales comissions…) is that all this channels didn’t had 200k or whatever. They payed half of it With the UA-cam channel and refit views. So they have a lot of equity at the end of the refit. I don’t think this public laundry was needed just to end the video selling you consulting … but hey.. one makes money doing how to video , another makes it using the first one and talking sh*t. Did it inspire confidence? Don’t know about you but… meh
I went on youtube to find information about sailing. Now I learned from a sailboat guy on youtube that I shouldn't listen to sailors on youtube. Well, I guess now I have to look up on youtube if listening to youtube sailors opinions on other youtube sailors is correct or not. . . jk, great videos and good information. Thanks:D
@chasinglatitudes The questioning of the ethics and diminished voracity of the truth in some of the UA-cam channels is something that I think you have done well to bring attention to ... especially in light of the possible consequences that could be incurred by unsuspecting pundits that have taken the sailing channels you mentioned to be a realistic version of boat life adventure. The UA-camr's sailing channel dream is about getting someone else to pay for their lifestyle while creating a tribe of their own, which is well known in Internet parlance as the "thousand true fans" who are required to consume your content so you can earn a living. It's NOT a how-to of the best way to go SAILING. The tough pill to swallow is the number of "followers" or "patrons" that gush on about the very thing they are paying for, which is sometimes low-value entertainment. Unfortunately, I see this done poorly with cringe-worthy audio, mindless drone shots and, as you so eloquently point out, cry face and bikini shots. As well as the tug on the heartstrings cry's for help as their inexperience or lack of actually generating a viable income bites them in the arse Hey, don't get me wrong, I tune into the channels you mention and others for ENTERTAINMENT and if they, as CONTENT PRODUCERS, have managed to convince people to fund their dream of resurrecting dumpster fire boats ( as you call them ) Because that's the only way they are going to get on the water; all power to them As someone who understands the effort and time to film, edit and upload videos, I do not devalue the expertise and time it takes to commit to a video publishing schedule in the hope of earning a few coins to keep the dream alive. I enjoy watching some of the channels you have mentioned. Would I financially contribute to them? No, and if they can ethically feel okay about the ENTERTAINMENT content they are putting out to fund their lifestyles, kudos to them for creating an excellent gig and being able to go sailing on someone else's dime.
Really like the factual clarity of this, and your other vids. All are super helpful with my planning. Tho it seems unfortunate to dis aspirations of people… their goals, their timelines - chosen or otherwise… their mistakes .. dumb-assed or not. Cheers 👍👍 thanks again for the info content…
Not really dissing them, I applaud the approach but the approach is for views not sailing, my only hope is that others enjoy their content but don't follow the same path to sailboat ownership
Wow! My brother from another mother. Geez! Did you nail Atticus & Evens. Wife and I watch both and scratch our heads... why why why? YT click? I guess it's really that simple. We're 71 yo. Sold the last boat (B411) of five 15 years ago. That was enough.
Unreal people can get that can of $$ for these older boats. My town has plenty of these-- I love sailing but am sitting at my house instead of buying any of these
I would really love a sailboat, with myhealth i need a furling mainsail though. My biggest fear is to buy a boat that has the worst setup and sailing behavior. Could you learn us what a good boat means? You mentioned a beam thats too short for the lenghth of the boat, thats super usefull to know!
I'm jealous of lady k ? Is that a joke, I live on a tropical island on the beach , I sail on average about 20,000 nm a year, I am a delivery captain, not a UA-cam vlogger. Lady k lives in the freezing north , does lake sailing on a trash can of a boat, what in the world would I be jealous of that clown 🤡 for , get real
UA-cam makes it look like anyone can do it....ABSOLUTELY FALSE!! We just spend months in the boatyard doing DIY, and it was still expensive. Yeah, we saved tens of thousands of dollars, but it was still expensive, and there are still things we'd like to do (just not in the budget). Watch youtube sailing channels for entertainment, not for a HOW TO (except chasing latitude) 😊😊
I agree with the first couple of channels you pick on. But when it comes to Atticus sorry mate but you cannot compare a Pacific Seacraft with a beneteau production boat. Just apples to oranges. I think you probably should have picked their first boat which was more to your point of picking up an ill equipped boat and dumping a ton of time and effort ... the pacific seacraft is a strong boat that will always keep its value unlike the previous boats you covered which I agree are crap.
Lol, that first boat reminds me of "The Beverly Hillbillies". I'm wondering where the best ex-charter deals are? Mediterranean, Caribbean or elsewhere? Thanks for the excellent video⛵
Yah I see your point. Atticus, I like those folks but why in the world would you try and start a family that late in life. At their age pregnancy is high risk because of complications and boy did they get that served up on a silver platter. Boats and kids, budget wise, just don't fit for the common man. I liked expedition Evans at the start when they were in the yard but that channel is drama around Jade's feelings and problems unfollowed them. Heck Jade isn't even her real name. Odd Life, I'm convinced those two are idiots and quit following. What about Yaba? They bought a sinking boat and I'm afraid to know how much they spent on the refit so far. They tore their diesel engine down and didn't rebuilt it, that's stupid. Then you have Leo from Tally Ho paid $1 for his boat and I'll bet he's close to a half million dollars in his refit if not more.
it is just Ludacris the amount of money people on youtube throw into a refit for what is usually an absolute dumpster , the vessel they could have bought would any day of the week blow away the boat they refitted
But it's pointless to evaluate these boats from the vantage point you are using... It's amount of content which can be generated... All of them are UA-cam projects.
hey, I actually enjoy your videos dissing youtubers quite a lot but I was wondering, would it make sense to you to make one on youtubers (or just people, maybe simple bloggers) that have done it right to take some notes on how to do it right? asking because I plan to sail with my girlfriend. We don't want to be youtubers but sadly youtube has been our source of info. We just want some guidance :) p.s. we're going to contact you when we're ready to head out (in maybe a year or two)
I think you are forgetting that the 160K or so money to buy a nicely used boat did not exist (OddLifeCraft). The money is only there because they did the work and the UA-cam. But now they actually have the 180K or so they sold it for, lots of skills so they dont have to be the "money people" that pays cash for a boat only to discover that they have no skills and have to pay someone else to do the smallest thing to the boat or no sense of security or confidence to set out sailing. Money is not everything. You need guts, confidence, experience and stamina do do things. Expeditions included.
I’m interested in a 2009 Dashew 77’ aluminum monohull twin wheel supposedly buy and sail that’s yet to be seen, after full servey in and out of water a firm price of $670,000.00 I will have to sail her around South America and back into the eastern coastal waters single handed mind you nothing that I have never done before. I refuse to have a boat that can’t be ocean ready in a matter of hours if need be. Living in the hurricane zone you either can afford to be outside of the zone or you can’t. I’m not a vloger I will leave that up to my possible crew if they want to supplement their income aside from what I give them. I’m able to live within a budget. The boat is the sister to Beowulf in a sloop-cutter version and painted not left the grey aluminum unpainted like her sister.
I like the bikini clickbait part and ignore the why didn't you learn to sail first before buying a fixer upper of unknown value that's going to cost you your firstborn and a kidney , this is all reality you tube stuff and you know when you click it's going to be really stupid like we forgot to buy toothpaste so we can't sleep together , I think it's great a couple can raise couple hundred thousand to buy a money pit just from a pic of a bikini butt or tears 🙂 in fact if you told me that was possible when I was say twenty wouldn't have believed you 🤣

That was a proper roasting. Not sure I was meant to be laughing through that! 😂
🤣🤣
You’re doing a great job and a great service to everybody by going directly to the point and being frank with everyone who’s interested in sailing.
As a delivery Capt. You should do a series on things like easiest to sail, most comfortable, yada yada.
Good point, I will have to give that some thought
Already doing enough yada yada..
I ate popcorn watching this. I learned it’s hard to shovel popcorn into my face while I’m laughing. I managed it, though! Keep up the good work.
Haha nice
Be careful , choking on popcorn sorta sucks
I say buy one of the boats you mentioned and maybe add solar and batteries and upgrade the electronics and go sailing.
crazy right
Dude !! I ❤❤❤ your comments. 😂😂 bikini, drama face, cry face, drama face ….. 😂😂. At last some honesty and criticism , be it other UA-camrs, boat producers, boat owners trying to selling you a piece of c…. Love it. Please continue.
Usefull info. -So refreshing hearing someone telling it like it is.
the Odd Craft couple were based in Brazil and the boat market in Brazil is totally different.
They are currently looking for ~50ft project boat too
The zatara mentorship thing is a train wreck
@@ChasingLatitudes have you interacted with anyone that had enrolled in it or seriously considered it?
@@codegame027 yes, the entire gist of the class is, buy a 500k catamaran or a very old mono hull and spend 400k outfitting it. On top of that for any type of actual one on one help everything is additional, it's all pre recorded garbage
Sooo fkn happy I found your videos. I've been looking at nothing but dumpster boats. Thanks for the information! Going to go through the rest of your videos. ✌️
glad to have you '
Everyone agrees with you regarding the financial ROI based on someone who is buying a boat with no UA-cam plan associated with it.
AGREE
One thing I noticed often in relation to expenses of sailing the med is that, at some point in the future there are at least two offset considerations. First is in normal over life on the land. There are expensive life food car fuel La La La which offset against the cost of living on the water for food fuel, etc. Of course it’s not exact, but it’s meaningful I suspect
The second is a time of selling the boat income is derived, and hopefully enough to mitigate the original purchase price, and so the net cost is really about boat maintenance.
Sorry about the texting, grammar bloopers, but you get basic idea👍🤪
@@gregoryanderson4874 haha, no worries welcome to my life
Glad i came across u as soon i hope to be buying next year, was looking into a prout cat but after watching your videos can't decide. My sea experience is just kayaking and just hadn't the time to sail but next year be different and probably have about 100 th euro for something. Live in Ireland and can't believe i have never learned to sail as surround by water 😅. Keep up the good work and can't wait to talk
Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment :)
As someone located in PR, can you recommend a sailing and/or boating class in the island?
I really, really like your unvarnished approach to your videos. Give it to me straight, even if there may be some personal bias. My experience is that this approach to anything is valuable, even if maybe there are counter arguments. Please, keep it coming. I'm learning a looooooootttttttttt.
I'm so bored with the sailing/marketing/drama channels that I like the lawn mowing videos better. They are kind of relaxing.
Great video. I would love to see your analysis of "Bums on Boats".
Great name for a boat: “Blame it on Uma”
If you want to learn about diesels Univeral diesels are basically Kubotas. Any farm auction will have those cheap. Yanmars are a bit harder to source though. Ebay maybe? Gotta be some from sunken boats or hurricane damage. Kubotas are kinda fun.
Captain Ron was my hero.
Absolutely smart advice.
I agree, I will look at spear it animal
No reason to give this segment a new name like 'attention economy'
It's been the "entertainment business" since before recorded time
And yes, it's an easy way to spend 15 minutes if the people are pleasant and the project is interesting
I never really watched gbu, but their homestead project is way more interesting. In fact, I think their views are now higher
So yeah, Chris is acknowledging that while these are enterprise channels, they aren't actually about sailing or boat ownership
I agree, sailing gbu new venture is far more appealing in my opinion@@larkangel6593
Well that was an abrupt ending 😂
sorry about that
Liked, ,subbbed, ,bought the book :)
You are as funny as honey badger videos.
wow are you rude.
8 foot draft in Bahamas you will most likely ground at some point unless you stick to just the major entry and exit channels
ua-cam.com/video/PEozktgjmwg/v-deo.htmlsi=sqS-lEpBS2gaS5P4
It could always be a head fake for views but seem legitimate.

I think every sailor should restore at least one boat it opens up windows and doors and creates a unique perspective....
Like I want a boat in CROATIA... let alone a completely unequipped charter boat.
Elan?
I agree with everything that you said and with all the people that you've mentioned I remember saying to myself what a waste of time. People like boat repair videos they did it for the clicks
Project Atiicus, a nice middle-aged bought a Rollie Polly antique design sailboat. The wife got pregnant and was seasick 24 hours a day and he made the brilliant decision to cross the ocean at time. I wonder why the child was born with medical problems? I bet he wishes he could do that over. They seem like good parents.
Wouldn't surpirse me if they inflated fees to get more donations and have a nice savings account somewhere...
Oh I'm 100% sure they do
Love your channel
Absolute truth you spend most of your time island jumping. No need for that boat.
true
Where can I take the classes you refer to? Boat electrical systems, marine engine class and so on. Thanks
Asa usually has online ones you can take
Everything you said is why i have trouble watching UA-cam sailors long term.
I certainly don't want to have a "finacial" disaster, as it says on the thumbnail image.
What do you think about sailing parlay?
What this gentleman is forgetting to mention ( don’t forget he makes money with consulting and sales comissions…) is that all this channels didn’t had 200k or whatever. They payed half of it With the UA-cam channel and refit views. So they have a lot of equity at the end of the refit.
I don’t think this public laundry was needed just to end the video selling you consulting … but hey.. one makes money doing how to video , another makes it using the first one and talking sh*t. Did it inspire confidence? Don’t know about you but… meh
Thanks, for the insight. You kill me, nothing like the unvarnished truth.
Love your videos!
Thank you
I went on youtube to find information about sailing. Now I learned from a sailboat guy on youtube that I shouldn't listen to sailors on youtube.
Well, I guess now I have to look up on youtube if listening to youtube sailors opinions on other youtube sailors is correct or not.

jk, great videos and good information.
As well as the tug on the heartstrings cry's for help as their inexperience or lack of actually generating a viable income bites them in the arse
Hey, don't get me wrong, I tune into the channels you mention and others for ENTERTAINMENT and if they, as CONTENT PRODUCERS, have managed to convince people to fund their dream of resurrecting dumpster fire boats ( as you call them )
Because that's the only way they are going to get on the water; all power to them
As someone who understands the effort and time to film, edit and upload videos, I do not devalue the expertise and time it takes to commit to a video publishing schedule in the hope of earning a few coins to keep the dream alive.
@@ChasingLatitudes ….. absolutely your experiences and pragmatism is grounded and super helpful. Cheers
People underestimate boat complexity. They are not prepared for maintaining a small city basically. I enjoy it personally, nothing like a good puzzle.
Wow! My brother from another mother. Geez! Did you nail Atticus & Evens. Wife and I watch both and scratch our heads... why why why? YT click? I guess it's really that simple. We're 71 yo. Sold the last boat (B411) of five 15 years ago. That was enough.
You are amazing, thank you so much for the super chat, youre amazing, yeah those channels are train wrecks

Fractional rig sloop with in mast furling would be the perfect option for someone with any health issues as they are by far the easiest to sail
My wife and I where so happy with a in mast furling. Never any discussions over reefing because in a few seconds the reef was out or in again.

He is jealous of “Lady K” sailing…he has an attitude only available to the internet.
Got to give it to them. Thats perseverance and as we all know failure can handle persistence. Carry on.
Watch youtube sailing channels for entertainment, not for a HOW TO (except chasing latitude) 😊😊
yeah
This guy is so funny😂 love it
I agree with the first couple of channels you pick on.
"Now you know your boat" but have no idea if it backs up straight... Or any idea how it sails...
Lol, that first boat reminds me of "The Beverly Hillbillies". I'm wondering where the best ex-charter deals are? Mediterranean, Caribbean or elsewhere? Thanks for the excellent video⛵
HAHA, THATS AWESOME
$2 an hr Labour? LMFAO
insane right
Yah I see your point.
Hilariously, brutally honest! So funny but true!
U changed my perspective on used boats while at the same time, making me lol ! Thanks

I WANT TO BUY A SAIL BOAT BUT I DONT NKOW WHAT I NEED TO GET OR HOW TO FIND IT
But it's pointless to evaluate these boats from the vantage point you are using...
We just want some guidance :)
p.s. we're going to contact you when we're ready to head out (in maybe a year or two)

Just curious, what is a Finacial Disaster?
I think you are forgetting that the 160K or so money to buy a nicely used boat did not exist (OddLifeCraft). The money is only there because they did the work and the UA-cam.
But now they actually have the 180K or so they sold it for, lots of skills so they dont have to be the "money people" that pays cash for a boat only to discover that they have no skills and have to pay someone else to do the smallest thing to the boat or no sense of security or confidence to set out sailing.
Money is not everything. You need guts, confidence, experience and stamina do do things. Expeditions included.
Like to find a Fiberglass 2 week course.
The whole van life thing mystifies me.
Seems like the money spent, they could have built one from scratch
Where are these marine engine classes?? Lol
