- In This video I replace the bad APIM module in my 2018 Mustang Ecoboost. The radio stopped working and the screen went completely black. This lead me to believe the Brains of sync 3 was dead. I install the new module and regain the use of my radio! If your having the same issue watch to find out how to fix it!
I purchased this unit from a company on Ebay called simplymichigan. Their stock changes often but typically have stock.

Worked great for me. I’m a car noob and you simplified it perfectly. Only thing is I didn’t have to take off the panel where my ebrake and transmission are. I was able to slide up the panel in front of my Sync 3 just enough to unscrew everything and replace the APIM. 👍🏼

How did you diagnose this as being the fix. My 2018 radio just shit the bed, black screen/won't come up. Wondering if this is best solution to go with.
Hey! Sorry to hear that! Honestly I took an educated guess as for me the radio started failing slowly. It’s really only the APIM module (the brain) and the screen that makes up the radio. I would guess it the module I unfortunately.
@@daily_driven Same issue, the radio started failing over a 2 month period and now just no longer turns on. Time to pull out the ol' wallet I guess and get fixin'. Thanks for the video, I'll use it to get mine repaired whenever I get my hands on a new apim.

It’s actually a cover I sewed on. I have video of it on the channel if you want to check it out!

I actually just picked these up from harbor freight, cheap, but they did the job!

They are just plastic so they don’t mare or scratch anything.
It’s Crazy how many of these are going out! Mine is out also. You would think something FORD or SYNC would be looking into. I had little glitches from the beginning and I had 3 miles on my car when I got it . Took 3 years go completely black
Yeah I agree!! It’s pretty crazy that this is a common problem and these cars aren’t very old! I take it yours is under warranty though?
@@daily_driven Actually just out of warranty but I did call FORD and they are going to pay for it be fixed and I didn’t have fight for it at all. They know there are issues!

I had the same problem on my mustang gt and I replaced that part and it worked. Dealer was gonna charge me $1200 to change the whole radio system.
I actually have the same issue. I took it to the dealer and they told me they can only order a new radio for me for 1200 $ and i obviously said no. If you could provide where you exactly got the apim module it would be helpful!

Just an FYI, you don’t need to remove/slide back the console to replace the APIM if that’s all you’re doing. Remove the $.02 tray and you can access the bottom screws from there with console still intact.
Can you explain this more I’m trying to do this install
@@sneakerstalkin if you can remove the coin tray it will expose the bottom screws enough that you can leave the console where it is.

I don’t feel so alone anymore, I had the same Issue for almost a whole year, the dealership wants 1200 dollars to fix it, I was thinking on just trade my car, but now I wanna try to fix it.
Mustang 2018, where can I buy the module?? And the tools?? Not crafty at all, but I’m so tired of not having music or be able to charge my phone that I’ll do it.

Mines as well been without mine for almost 2 years I can hear music but only can charge my phone through the console but my screen is black bought a knew radio it didn’t solve anything I’m most definitely about to replace the module ford won’t do anything about it without trying to charge an arm and a leg! I feel as if they should have a call back on these radios
Didn't realize you would have to pull apart half of the interior to get to the module - what a pain in the a**! Sound deadening material works best if you can apply it to the floor (or in your case the drive shaft tunnel). I did that in the trunk of my mustang after putting on Flowmaster American Thunder axlebacks on - keeps the noise outside. Great video!

I’m having the same issue “black screen”, pretty much troubleshooted what i could, you mentioned a dealership price, did you take it in for diagnosing and found it was the apim or is it just a known common problem and should be replaced, I think I’m on week 2 now of no radio and i want to drive off a bridge already lol, i like the video you made and look forward to using it to replace the apim if thats my issue. Also, how is the replacement still doing?
Hey Troy, bummer your having a similar issue. No I did not take it to the dealer, I just did some online research within forms and FB pages and a lot of arrows were pointing to the APIM. I hope the video helps if you need to do the same! So far so good on the replacement! Fingers crossed it stays that way!🤞

For anyone who just wants to change the APIM Module, you don’t have to remove the screws in the coin tray, there is a plastic sleeve covering in between the smoke plug and the usb. Removing them will expose the bottom screws of the front panel and for the rest follow the video.
Appreciate the video, i know its been a while since you released this video, i did have a a question, did you need to disconnect the battery when doing this job?

@@gdmgplay when i turn of tje car and started it the same day the problem was still there. But when i started the car next day the problem was gone and it worked just as normal. Dont have any åroblems seens then i hope you find out what it is and that it is low cost to fix pmease update here how ots going thank you
Hey anyone know if that can keep the stereo from turning off I got a Gt premium my screen doesn’t shutoff I pull the fuse and put it back and it work while the car if off but as soon as I turn the car on and turn it off it does the same thing it just doesn’t turn off any ideas pls help
Mine just went out due to trying to update it and it just now displays the 4” display since I had done the swap on my 2019 GT base model to a sync 3 8” I can purchase a used APIM for 200$But would need to modify the Data on forscan. Does anyone know what I would need to change?

Question here. My battery went and fried mine, but the APIM still works but the touch screen is not responsive. Was that case or was your unit completely dead? Dealer wanted 1600 to fix the screen. Can't afford and my 2017 GT Mustang is out of warranty. Thank you
You ever figure it out? I just bought a 15 and the radio did the same thing, sure enough my battery is ugly too
eveytime I connect my phone for carplay it always ask me for permission to connect the iPhone but any other iPhone it won't connect. but no black screens as of now. wud that still be the APIM?
Hmm it could be but not 100% on that one. I had a lot of connection issues with mine before replacing.
My wife's car screen just went black the other day...its been working hit and miss...sounds like I am going to be tearing the car apart soon. :(

How did you know the problem was with the APIM ? Did your sync had specific issues and what was the issue?
So my radio broke too and I have sync 3 but no navigation can I just buy one with navigation like the APIM or I have to get a new screen too
I’m pretty sure you can buy one with navigation in it and install no problem. They are a bit more expensive but should work! I would double check with the seller to be safe.

Hey! Well the USB in the center counsel stopped working. Not sure if the one under the radio stopped to I never use that one lol.

Hey! You do not need to remove the center council but you do need to pop it loose and pull back on it in order to get the faceplate off. Other than that yeah all the other stuff needs to be removed just like in the video. Your welcome!

The Apim module that you got is it a sync 2 or sync 3? I’m also having the same problem with my 2018 mustang, and I just don’t know if getting the sync 2 or sync 3 is something important?
Hey thanks!! Yes the unit I got was a sync 3 apim. If you have a 2018 mustang as well you are going to want a sync 3 apim. Sync 2 is for 15-17.

Nope this unit did not have navigation. I didn’t have nav in the original one either. However if you do they sell the modules programmed with nav

I don’t have a link but the company I bought from is on Ebay, seller is simplymichigan. They typically have a few options, some with Nav and without. They will program to your Vin as well for free. Hope that helps!

It started where it took like 6 min for it to turn on and when it did it was super laggy. Then a few days later the screen turned black and wouldn’t come on, but the radio worked. Then Radio stopped working entirely. So it was a progression. A seller called simplymichigan on eBay sells good units. They will program to your Vin. Hope that helps!

THANK YOU !!!!! My screen began to get laggy and then completely went out(black screen). My USB ports wouldn’t working either. I had my car like that for 2 month and couldn’t take it no more. I was gonna take it to the dealership but then saw ur vid. I went on eBay purchase the APIM as u stated in ur vid swapped it and works perfect now! Hopefully it don’t go bad again, however thanks again great vid. 💯🔥

@@mdgean2271Yes I think it is the APIM because my radio screen is completely blank and won’t come on at all and my usb ports doesn’t work so I am going to replace the APIM in a few weeks. I will let you know if it resolves my issue.

@@daily_driven well that's funny you ask if you look up my VIN number it says it's the base model but if you look at my car it's fully loaded with all the premium package white ceramic leather seats air conditioned and heated seats 20 inch rims fog lights lip kits backup camera parking assist I don't know how it got all that if it is just the basic Mustang but

How did your radio stop working?
The screen started going dark and then a few days later the radio gave out and it died. Not sure why. Seems like it’s a common issue on these for some reason.
Could you send me the link where you got it from? My mustang seems to have the same problem, Like the screen is completely dark! No backup camera, no radio, yet the backup sensors still works. Was this the same issue you had?
