Wow.....this guy sounds like me a while ago. Looking for "christians" and being let down. I was led to the bible to get to know HIM. Not in other people.....I had to actually start reading the bible. Now it is so different. Not easier but like my eyes are opened up and that has become the most important thing for me. God bless this man.......I do understand and pray for God to reveal Himself in a magnificent way very soon.

What an interesting conversation. I appreciated hearing how Adam's worldview and Sean's worldview are so different, but they could discuss it so kindly and respectfully. I hope you will have more conversations ahead. Adam is a very thoughtful man and I was struck by how hard it would be to convert to Christianity if everyone you knew and loved was atheist too. This made me want to show kindness, love & interest in all sorts of people, as Sean is doing in his videos. Loving people and living a life that has been changed by Jesus for the better is probably far more attractive to atheists than endless arguments!

This was massively cool. Big shout-out to both of you. Adam, thanks for your willingness to be open and honest about where you're coming from, and Sean, thanks for your compassion and thoughtful approach to Christianity.
As a Christian, I think we have some of the same false assumptions about the other side of the aisle as Adam admitted that his side of the aisle has about us, and I think conversations like these help challenge those false assumptions.

This was an incredible conversation. Thank you both! Adam, just sent you a DM on Twitter. As an evangelical Christian who loves Jesus and always looking for ways to share his love with others, it is very helpful to gain your perspective. I think very often many Christians are so eager to jump right into evidence for Jesus and his resurrection, without knowing if the person has a seeking heart. God has really been laying on my heart lately that what people need more than anything is to see us living out our love for Him and Faith while truly loving our neighbors as ourselves… Know that many who watch this channel are praying for you and your family. Thank you for the post. I appreciate this man's honesty. Most people that I've come across that claim to be atheists seem to have an axe to grind, shroud their positions in confusing rhetoric, and stand on strawman arguments and mockery. The more my faith grows, the more I look at people that claim to be atheists as fools. I hope to find a more gracious term, God willing, but my point is, how can a finite being make such a matter of fact claim? From my position, it seems like laziness. Study the world's religions, read the Bible, study all positions from theists and atheists and after 20 years or so of legit study and maybe I'll be willing to hear you out.

This was so well done - bravo to David and Sean for a respectful intelligent discussion of atheism and evangelical Christianity. The biggest take away for me was the limited exposure we each often have to the “other”. I live in the Bible Belt, so I have extensive expose to evangelical Christianity, but its presence is much quieter in my professional life.

Firstly, Adam is a super likable guy and I enjoyed this conversation.
Secondly this made me think to suggest an interview with Kathryn Shulz who might have had some overlap with Adam at the Newyorker. Shulz's analysis of human propensity for "wrongness" is the most influential concept in adjusting the course of how I treat people outside of Christian sources. Her book Being Wrong is about 10 years old now but she has a new memoir that deals really thoughtfully with the concept of death (or more precisely, "loss") from an atheist perspective among other subjects that would fit well here to discuss. I'd love to see it if you could get ahold of her.

The Bible says God prefers for people to be in LGBT relationships.
Anyone that teaches the LIE of monetary tithing, sells anything using the gospel, or teaches that same-sex marriage is a sin CHOOSES to die with the wicked.
Luke 10:7 states the only wages for ministering are eating and drinking whatever you are given.
Also, know that rich people will all die. You can't be a Christian, sit on all kinds of money, watch your fellow brothers and sisters starve, suffer, or be homeless, choose to do nothing about it, and think that it's ok. Those are all wolves.
Mathew 19:12 Eunuchs that are born that way are transgender. Eunuchs made that way by others were abused in some way and something inside of them blocks off a certain type of body but it doesn't happen to everyone that is abused. Those that choose to live like Eunuchs FOR THE SAKE OF THE KINGDOM OF HEAVEN are bisexual people that choose partners of the same sex-characteristics but opposite in regards to gender. Notice, it states God PREFERS for people to be in LGBT relationships. Leviticus, Corinthians, and Timothy were translated wrong by Billy Graham. Those verses are actually referring to pedophilia. Romans 1:27 All of the men were male in regards to gender, all of the women were female in gender. It is not referring to Eunuchs (where one partner is transgender). Also, it had nothing to do with marriage of any kind. They were trying to procreate during orgies so God did it on purpose. Anyone that continues to teach same sex marriage is a sin when the Bible says God prefers for people to be in LGBT relationships will also die by their own choice.
In order to be a church building, the place must house people inside of it. Otherwise it is just another private money-making business part of Babylon that furthers satan's agenda. Stay out of the fake churches.
I am Elijah of Malachi 4:5-6 and Acts 3:22-23 says it will come to pass that anyone that fails to listen to me will be UTTERLY destroyed from among the people. Again, everyone has a choice.
And anyone that deletes my messages CHOOSES to reject Jesus Christ Himself and that means they also CHOOSE to die with the wicked.
I am Elijah so that means any discrepancies in the holy books are ultimately decided by me. I am also to usher in the Messiah! Be ready: Jesus is coming back!
      WORLD PEACE IS COMING!!
By the way, anything based on gender norms no longer applies. In fact, the last will be first and the first will be last. It's women that will be ruling the kingdom of heaven........
And rapture is not what most people think. Its when God's true people shine with the glory of God and are miraculously healed. Read Malchi 4:2-4 and the verses surrounding it...........
Donald Trump is of the antichrist spirit and he will die with the wicked if he chooses not to repent.
Malachi 2 proves Malachi 3:8-11 is talking to the thieving church leaders. Every single fake preachet knrw if they brpught the money back they were never supposed to take for ministering then God would end Covid but they love money so much they intentionally chose to kill everyone instead of repenting!!!!!!

Although his and his circle's exposure to Christianity has been so limited, I would be curious about his view toward more historical Christianity, the impact of Christian views on the West, the fact that so many great thinkers and artists in our history have been Christians, the fact that Christianity has led to so many great institutions in our culture like academia (well, used to be great)...? In other words, curious about the philosophical or spiritual thinking that led to these cultural/societal elements.

    • @AdamDavidsonAD
      @AdamDavidsonAD 2 роки тому +3

I have thought about this. The short answer is that there seem to be faiths that dominant in any large cultural space. So, the Mesopotamian region had a fairly stable system of belief for thousands of years. China and other parts of Asia have had that, too.
In my mind, largely for political reasons, Christianity dominated Europe. It would have been *some* faith system and it happened to be Christianity.
So, it's more happenstance than some special quality of Christianity. After all, the Dark Ages were Christian, too. The Crusades were Christian.

    • @Luke_Radiosmash
      @Luke_Radiosmash 2 роки тому +1

@@AdamDavidsonAD Point taken. It's easy to create a positive narrative for any belief system. I once watched some videos by a flat-earther, cutting and pasting historical and scientific tidbits and making a very compelling case!
I think (and hope) my Christian faith is built both on the rational evidence behind the Gospel as well as how it seems to resonate with my experience today. So, if I saw *only* the benefits of Christian belief: one example would be the Western idea, built on being created in God's image, of the sovereign individual with rights of free speech, and that from that point of value and significance we can dialogue and seek truth together (like this dialogue!) and that we should care about even the poor and the handicapped and all the "others" around us... an idea that is very much NOT the default when you look through history and even contemporary regimes that view man as mere meat or material or race...
If I saw this "light" in the darkness that resonated with my idea of morality, human nature, etc., but the belief was NOT founded on an incredibly robust case for a resurrection, and a rigorously scholarly formation and preservation of the canon of scripture, I would appreciate it but I wouldn't be a Christian. On the other hand, if there seemed to be good evidence for Christ and his death and resurrection, but they hadn't led to anything positive in the world, I don't know what that belief would look like either?
Which gets to your point: I think the darker actions of those claiming to be Christians can be written up to a twisting of the ideas to suit man's ends. Even Hitler used the Bible to win people over to his cause! If I only saw the Bible applied to oppress people, I wouldn't follow it. I would say 3 things in response to that conjecture: that the positive outweighs the good, that you can see Christianity "evolving" people and societies over the centuries, and that where you see evil being done, it's clearly not following the teachings of Christ or the New Testament.
Christ taught the idea of his word being "put in your hearts," the idea of an inner connection with God and an individual agency for understanding right and wrong. If just this one idea is applied, it is very hard to ultimately justify oppressing people, taking away their rights and voices. Dostoevsky wrote about how the ideas of Christ undermined the control and oppression of the State Church in those dark times...
Anyway, this has gotten way too long. I admire your desire to dialogue with many vastly differing perspectives! I loved your point about realizing how each person's context leads to a justification of things you or I might find outrageous. It doesn't mean we can't all seek the best way/the truth together, but it's a great way of being understanding of our fellow man.

I also wanna say that the reason I feel like this is so great is because it has been my experience that many of the other Christians I know here in Georgia just accept things without questioning them and I cannot understand it to save my life, so this is a breath of fresh air to me to see this kind of dialogue for sure. We all know that you typically aren't going to find very many Christians hanging out in the circles that Adam Davidson hangs out in but the fact that he is essentially saying there were 0 is sad. The only "missionaries" in those parts of the US are just pastors that plant churches but never engage in the community they live in outside of "outreaches", etc. We need to see more missionaries that are seeking to love those parts of the world by genuinely engaging in those communities without feeling like they can't do that out of fear that they'll be misrepresented or will become like their surroundings.

Sean, you are a master of listening and are able to ask the best questions, allowing people to best explore and express their ideas.

UA-cam will have a 2005, 3-Part, series, "The Monastery" and its follow-up program, "The Monastery Revisited." It involved 5 very modern men living the monastic life for forty days and forty nights while TV cameras tracked their progress. The second suggestion is a follow-up book written by the Abbot of Worth Monastery, where the 5 men stayed. The book is most meaningful after having watched the series. It addresses the spiritual life from all points of view, especially from that of seekers trying to make sense of different religions and expressions of spirituality. As a Christian living in one of the top ranking Progressive "unChurched" States in the country, Christians ARE looked down upon and treated with the discrimination they are so often accused of. It is very hard to not become hurt and angry about this and in the process, jaded. I fight it constantly and have to try to stay away from watching too much political media. I hope our culture will change back to a more tolerant one, but I'm afraid it will never happen again and it saddens me terribly.

Great conversation! My only concern is that apologetics and sound reasoning are helpful, but most of us don’t come to faith and remain in the faith simply through reasoning. Rather it’s the supernatural work of the Holy Spirit giving us a new heart and a renewed mind. A curious atheist may struggle with this, because it’s supernatural and subjective, but you will never fully grasp Christianity if you don’t understand the role of the Spirit.

M B THIS...is what is missing.. It is good to have love and compassion, but the true gospel of Christ is what needs to be shared first and foremost.
J esus said he came to bring division... what he said was truth, and many did not like it and did not want to hear it. Why? Because they didn't want to surrender their lives over to C hrist and wanted to keep living how they want to.
There were disciples who walked away from him, and he turned to the others and ask, " do you want to leave too? And Peter said, to whom would we go? You have the truth and the life.
Many in the "christian" arena(and alot with big followings), have sold out to ecumenism. This is the trend where things are going. In an effort to be love and nice, they are overcorrecting , and watering down the WHOLE truth.

Thoroughly enjoyed this. Thank you! I find it interesting that he makes a point of saying that he and his fellow atheists? media colleagues? family? (“we”) don’t think about evangelical Christians as often as we may think that they do. I have never perceived that atheists or media think about evangelical Christians as they go about their lives. I do, however, observe that most of my atheist friends do go about their lives advocating for the implementation of policies (such as gay marriage, which Adam clarifies he supports a number of times in this interview) that are counter to a traditional Judeo-Christian (and might I say, Muslim) morality. I would say that it is in this that I perceive that Adam (and his “we”) actively attempt to destroy a Biblical worldview, whether he is consciously thinking of evangelical Christians while he is doing it, or not.

At 20:54 mark, Adam is 100 percent correct. I lived in NYC from the 70s to 2022. I picked up and moved me and my family to Texas 4 months ago because of seeing the truth of his statement. And never been happier!
Classic or Historical protestant Christianity is irrelevant in NYC. Most “churches” are heretical or apostate and don’t even know it. They don’t follow the apostles creed or even know what it is. And left biblical marriage years ago.
I can write 5 chapters in this comment section about how bad of a dead zone NYC is for a protestant who believes in historical Christianity.
I wish I met Adam when I was living there. He would of been a great friend, just for the fact he understands what we believe and I understand what he believes and we can be civil. Unfortunately NYC is now tribalism…

With the exception of my dad's oldest brother who is an atheist
And I have a cosion on my dads side who use to be catholic but became a Hindu not long after he married his wife who was from India.
My mom's side is mainly Episcopalian, baptist, or Catholic,
With the exception my mom who is an Agnostic Atheist and my oldest sister she pagan/ Wiccan
I am the only one that is unaffiliated with any denomination and believes it's about a personal relationship with Jesus and anything beyond that like using rosaries journaling and meditating as a way to talk to God and Prey is only an add on to that personal relationship.

Really liked the talk with Adam. I liked his last question with Shawn and how he views his belief.
I do think that Adam kinda forgets that all Christians at one point were separated from God in their own minds and come from that point of view also. We understand his point of view (the basic idea that we don't need God) because we all had it. We are just on the other side and see it through a different lens now that Christ has saved us from thinking God is indifference or uncaring.
I equate it with when one becomes married or one has a child. We all can read the stories and can imagine what it is like but until the event happens it is theoretical and not a concrete knowing. I view my Christian life in the same way. I never imagined I could be different until the event itself changed my whole perception even though I had read about it and seen other people who had the experience. It is a mystery until it happens and then it makes sense. There is knowing that one only has on the other side.
He can say he doesn't know but his not knowing doesn't mean that others can't know. I believe him when he says he loves his wife but the reality is he may very well not but that is not a very charitable view of him. He knows that he loves his wife but explaining what that means is very difficult. The same is true of God. One can know God but explaining your knowledge of that sublime metaphysical relationship is hard to explain in an hour talk.

I don't think Christians are obsessed with the people from the "secular world." I think it is the fact that Adam specifically has an interest in these kinds of topic, apologetic topics, so it seems that way. On a day to day, I'm more thinking of how I haven't read my Bible and whether or not God really wants to talk to me, than I am thinking "those atheist a damned for life" or sth like that.
I think the idea of us also trying to counter issues with the secular world is because it is inevitable according to the faith and the secular world. Most Christians aren't even vocal about their faith (i think) and that's why apologetics tries to help Christians understand different worldviews so that we can reach more people in truth since we, as Christians, really believe the Bible is what truth is even though we still doubt at times.

I found Adam didnt focus on apologetic topics at all, perhaps science does register for him. I'd like to see how he responds to fine tuning evidence, or biblical reliability and other objective evidence that supports Christianity. Apologetics is IMO the best hope for evangelism in a secular /post truth culture.
Adam states he has little interest in Dawkins / Sam Harris etc, that is odd to me.

And that is exactly what happens to so many who go about defending their worldview in that manner...there is always a loser; the weaker debater. All I have is my testimony of what he did for me. I was living in sin my entire adult life, searching for love in all the wrong places I guess you could say. I knew there had to be more to life. Then my mom passed away and I was beyond devastated. Worst pain I’ve ever felt and I cried out to God to bring me peace. I’ve always believed in God but I wasn’t living for him. I started watching a pastor named Greg Laurie and I kept watching everything I could find, I couldn’t get enough of Gods word. I fell on my knees and gave my life to Jesus. I repented and my life completely changed. I’m not the same person. Jesus died on the cross for all of you and rose from the dead 3 days later to save you from your sins because he loves you. I know I’ll always be ridiculed for my faith. Jesus said they will hate you because they hated me first. And I’m ok with that. I’m happy with my decision to follow Jesus because I know where I’m going when I die. That brings me so much peace but it also makes me sad for unbelievers. Jesus is coming back soon. I know you don’t believe that either but it’s going to happen. I pray you will remember my words when millions of believers disappear. I don’t know any of you but I truly love and care about all of you. ❤️

The brain is a Mandelbrot set.( I am not asking a question- the brain is a Mandelbrot set)
    How is this so?
Note that the Mandelbrot set is a mapping of Julia sets. The real number line of the Mandelbrot set is the logistics map. There are many shapes a thing in nature can be. It would be easy to grasp why a biological thing could be a sphere but it is unlikely that a thing in nature has the form of a Mandelbrot set unless it is one.
The Mandelbrot set has a beginning and an ending. It has a limited area and an infinite border. It is the image in which the brain is made, your face is made, all animals are made.
Consider the above. Look at the coronal cross Section Of the brain and match it to the Mandelbrot set with the outer bubbles turned in to exactly match the fissures and sulci of the brain. Look at the caudal cross Section Of the brain to find a matching 4 lobed Julia set. Consider still that science presently does not know why the brain has 2 hemispheres or why there is both ipsilateral and contralateral neural pathways. The brain as a Mandelbrot set explain this.
May grace and peace be with you.
    Good conversation.

Do you feel like he has come to understand Christianity as an "us vs them"? Or why would he be so upset about it? Just curious as a Christian mom, maybe it's just the unknown for him! J esus even said, if they hated me, they will hate you. Becathey don't understand you're concerned about saving souls, but they look at it as a bother and disagreeing with them and their lifestyles. God left the way and instructions ( for our own good because he has our best interest at heart,...not because he was trying to be mean or a party pooped as I once thought). But, now I realize as an immature teen, I had the same rebellious attitude toward my earthly father too even though he really loved me and had my best interest at heart.

I think that Adam philosophically needs development. Perhaps a refresher of Plato and Aristotle, and to really absorb what they meant when they taught. I find that an understanding of the platonic world and a priori knowledge is prior to really understanding the arguments for God.
When I first encountered arguments for God, I found them to be laughable thought experiments with no real basis in "reality". As I developed philosophically, I was no longer laughing. My world changed in a huge way. I've always been a thinker who desires to understand things, even mundane things. I now think God used that desire to show me truth.
I did also find myself thinking that Adam was a little bit duplicitous in some of his arguments. Maybe not intentionally, but his story of his childhood and his hypotheses on his potential conversion contradicted his analysis of his own culture's relationship with Christianity.

All of this he derives from einstein's relativity equations with an assumption that the universe has a center rather than the "no center" Copernican model that is by in large the consensus. Anyway, it's thought provoking.

It shouldn't be too much of a stretch to say that an unanswered problem can be answered by an undiscovered property of the physical realm. Of course the same is true for anything that might have this property, including God.
I think we just don't understand how consciousness works but we understand it originates from the brain which is a physical thing. Pain receptors light up in the brain when the body is subjected to pain. Causing head trauma can reduce one's capacity for consciousness. Our consciousness is effected by drugs and our diet. This is evidence that it is probably a physical property.
The point is that we should be agnostic about things we don't understand. I would have preferred a different example besides consciousness because I think we do understand it enough to say it is probably a physical property.

That doesn't mean I think all claims are equally valid. I do think some things are provably wrong and that the scientific method--having testable and falsifiable hypothesis that are tested and reproduced--gets us way closer to truth. But truth, itself, is ever-elusive. We will never be in a state of knowing the full truth.
