Winter Garden Makeover, Putting The Raised Beds to Sleep

  • We've had multiple frosts now, and while the mini greenhouse is doing great, the Brussel Sprouts don't seem to be moving along quickly enough for a harvest before they freeze completely. I believe they're too deep into the shade, as the low winter sun is giving less and less full light to this end of the yard. I had planted them too early in Spring, put them in the shade to protect from summer sun, and now have pretty well screwed the pooch. Next year I'll start my seeds later, and plant them in an area with more winter sun. Lessons learned!

I basically never pull root balls out of our beds unless I'm just curious to examine them. Just cut the stalks off at the base. Those old roots feed beneficial microbes, they will break down in the soil and put nutrients right back in it, they help keep the soil from getting compacted, and they allow rain to seep in deeper. Leaving them in there helps build up more good soil season after season. Good work collecting the neighbor's raked up leaves! Rake/mix them in together with that new topsoil whenever it thaws and they'll help you a lot.😊
I feel very strongly that a gardener's most important job is to grow soil. Keep adding that organic material, leaves, roots, compost, whatever, every chance you get. If you grow good healthy soil you can grow any plants you want.

I knew roots would break down as added compost, but I didn't realize they were THAT beneficial! I'll leave them next time, thanks!

The cold snap around Christmas did in my leaf lettuce and cabbage. I'm done until March. I got off 2 cabbages about the size of duck pin bowling balls. Made beef soup with one. Yum!

Hmm. Somehow i missed this one. Just happened to stumble across it. Yes you are definitely getting to cold to not have a heating lamp. 🥶 Haven't seen the sun in almost a week. Bout to loose my mind....🤪 High of 76 here today, with rain showers. No idea how people up north stay mentally healthy in the winter.

Speaking of experiments...I'm experimenting with overwintering onions. I've used sets and seedlings. Most are in grow bags with a cover similar to yours and 4 globo onion seedlings in the side of a raised bed with a cover. Not looking to get them to bulb, just stay alive, dormant and get an early start next spring. We're in Virginia zone 7A. Temp this morning was 17 degrees. We have cover crops in my 4 large raised beds and we'll be amending and covering the remaining raised beds this weekend. Work never stops! Great videos.

Winter gardens don't need a greenhouse. Ask the Russians. I was raised in Tennessee. You plant deeper. Raised beds are more suceppetable to cold. Cool you experiment. Live and learn.
Dr gave me dog exercises to do for my bad back. Worked for me. No impact exercises. Stretch n swim. Luck with your garden.
I commented on your Tatts. Was immediately set straight. By who? Chuckle.

We had our first frost in the Netherlands last weekend. About a month late. I've got 8 of my 9 (4.2 meters by 1.5 meter) beds winter ready. My beds don't really sleep, there's a lot of plants that survive winter here like, Kale, Brussel Sprouts, Garlic, Onion and some hardy leafy greens. Your garden works very similar to mine, which makes me wonder. Where are you? Or at least which climate zone? And yes, you look great in overalls ;)
