Grow Potatoes Through Winter With Simple DIY Greenhouse

- Happy Halloween! We planted potatoes Halloween day after the first significant rain of the season! Yesterday we fluffed, then added several new layers to our raised beds, which had settled, and today we plant a handful of the same potatoes we dug up just a few months ago. We built a tiny greenhouse out of household materials to help to spuds along through the coldest days. We've never grown any winter crops, this will be interesting, we will be posting updates weekly!

You should plant some garlic! I just planted 50 cloves of two different varieties last week. You can't use the store stuff though. Search local organic garlic.

I bought a large bag of Snickers for the Halloween trick or treaters, but we live out in the boonies and had no visitors so now I guess I'll have to eat that bag of Snickers myself. Happy Halloween!!!!!

Love the garden videos! I have an idea for seaming the plastic pieces. Try a Teflon coated iron to melt the two together . We always used it to seam plastic wrapping over rolls of carpet. It only takes a second to bind the two with a warm iron.

You do know if you have more than one eye growing on a potato you can cut it and have two potato plants or three or four for anime growing Well I like your tin idea I have to keep that in mind hopefully I have my garden after somewhere next year we are Florida backup north. So from the Old Man in Tampa Florida may God bless and keep you all safe this winter
Hope you have a heat lamp and most likely a blanket. The plastic alone will not be enough for prolonged or hard freezes. Doesn't snow much in south Texas, but i've seen as much as 13". With the dome of the wire I'd be surprised if enough built up to collapse it.
Do you put your egg shells and coffee grounds (if you drink coffee) in the garden? If not, you should. The coffee grounds add acid to the soil and the egg shells add calcium. Just a thought from an old man who's not afraid of sharing the things that his Grandmas and great aunts and uncles taught him. Gardening is a passion.

Hey Nina, saw your maters in the last video and I saw something you could do differently and may produce even more. The non discriminate tomatoes, plant and maintain them using the main stem method. I did it last year and they don't take up as much space and produced MAJOR tomatoes. Hope this helps.

Nina, I really like the idea of the mini greenhouse. Hope it works for you. I plan to try some lettuce and herbs in my basement this winter just to see how it works. I had a slow Halloween this year. Only 5 trick or treaters. One didn't even have a costume on. I asked him what he was supposed to be and he said, " I'm a Werewolf 3 days before the Full Moon." 😁 He really thought that through. Now to go to Patreon to see what you have there.

Nina did you plant them with the sprout up, down, sideways? I’ve never planted potatoes, how ever I have a couple grow light and thinking of planting some a couple 35 gallon old mineral containers and placing them in my garage next to the house so they want freeze. Plus I can shut the garage door at anytime I would need to. I might add I’m in Texas so topical we do get a lot of freezing weather but we do have some.

Boooooooooooooooo!!!! Dark plastic on the actual ground where the potatoes are until the weather changes back to warm!!!! Once the the weather changes to warm then build an 18 inches mound of loose dirt over them before they break the ground more boards on the sides too...... You want at least a half bushel of potatoes from this planting or the total bed!!!! Great luck!!! But you need a different place to live... A homestead say 5 to 10 acres near a great deep stream......... Look on some web sites!!! You are waiting to long too change your life!!! Go For It, Josh make her a happy Witch!!!!

I wonder if you can find an old sky-light dome (or two) at a garage sale somewhere... or from place like re-home etc and use that for your beds every Winter.
That would be perfect!
