  • I've been having a lot of fun with ‪@ikmultimedia‬ 's ToneX kit especially since I went into the studio and modelled some old Vox AC30 amps. This is a very long video and I cover a lot of ground relating to playing this piece, note choices when tackling Queen's material as well as how I went about creating the guitar tone using AmpliTube and ToneX.
The whole thing does go on a bit so sorry about that!

Best sound / preset you have made! Very close to the original

It's great I've been using it as a base to build completely diffent tones aswell. We all have different setups and gain staging through interfaces so I think that's a given. But the eq models in the presets is the key and that's why this is great to build from for me anyway 👍

Great vid Thomas, found the amplitube stuff very informative, I haven’t got half a clue what does what on the EQ’s especially. I kinda move stuff around in and endless circle in the hopes I’ll hit something that sounds half decent 😂

Fabulous stuff. I’ve always loved Brian’s playing and I can hear his little nuances in your playing. I’m not sure if I’d ever go as far as getting a red special though I just might. I have the Tonex pedal version and I wonder if you too? Could I get a strat to sound a bit lie the red special? I have a rothwell ‘hot little knob’ that gives series wiring options for strat pickup.

Hi Ray! The pedal isn’t for me as I prefer working off the computer for all the options it gives with FX, multiple amps, post eq etc.
I use this kit onstage so I need four outputs too as I keep my monitoring. With regards the guitar that’s trickier. A bridge humbucker would cover lots of it and the simulator in the Brian May Amplitube set can actually do the out of phase bit fairly well.

Brian Mays has done some great work but I could never imagine wanting to clone his sound or his guitar. Individuality is what I find impressive. Copying even the best is doable with simple practice of their locks.

Seeing as he's the guitar player in a Queen tribute band this comment has no value

It's an interesting point. For me, it's a professional imperative as I play in a Queen tribute band. Aside from that, to really get under the nails of a guitarist can have great educational value. Dedicating one's entire playing life to one guitarist is a dangerous folly. You can never become another musician so individuality is inevitable. The degree of uniqueness is probably proportional to the diversity of influences and the strength of the imagination of a particular player.
One thing I've found doing the Brian May thing is that there is such a unique voice to the music that you can get away with a simple learning of the licks but you miss out on so much nuance by limiting the exploration to that.
We're in an era where so many guitarists rely solely on tab rather than their ears or simply exploring material and you can hear that in a lot of people's playing. It can become very regimented and boring as opposed to being vocal and expressive. You won't turn into Brian May by analysing what happens beyond the notes of the page. You will probably learn how and why he made certain choices with articulations and positions that will subconsciously go into your vocabulary.
I think the main thing is that guitarists shouldn't just restrict their studies to Brian or even other guitarists.

I’m using my homemade red specual for other things than Queen. And this comment is really strange since if you ever play a les paul, you are one of the millions who has cloned les paul, since it’s his signature guitar. Are you more individual if you use a strat, that millions pf others play or a red special that’s very famous but also very rare to see around in studios and on stages?

@@callejarvholm the last Les Paul I played was the last Les Paul I played, Strat and Tele guy. There was no disrespect meant towards you. I personally just believe that Brian Mays is just an average guitar player at best. Just delete the comment and let your obviously injured ego or whatever breathe. You built a nice guitar if you built it, you did a great job sounding like Mays, but there is already a Mays, you can play so maybe build your own that sounds like you and play like you. Anyhow, just a thought. Regardless this is my last response. I think we would both agree that I somehow wasted enough of your time......and mine.
