Seriously...you crack me up! You are the first youtuber that I ever watched and I think you will always be my fav. Your enthusiasm makes me happy and I love how you laugh at yourself. Thanks for the entertainment. I like watching you even when I am only half interested in the subject.
Unfortunately I didn't watch this video before storing all my decals I had fun making after watching your first 2 videos. So, yes all 20 of my beautiful napkins that came out beautify using yes paste and parchment paper, bonded together. Oh well now I know. Love your videos.
Just for the hell of it, I tried distress rock candy crackle paint on a napkin on top of freezer paper and dried it with my heating tool. It dried very fast, peeled very easily, and had a wonderful shiny, stiff and very transparent outcome. now I need to try decoupaging it down. Thanks for all the info!
I experimented using Elmer's glue and small amount of water brushed on to a plastic cutting sheet ( works like a craft mat , but much cheaper, originally used to chop veggies etc). Placed the peeled napkin on top. Smoothed it out and brushed more glue on top. When dry I just peeled it off. I have not glued it onto another piece of paper yet. I have done this using the shiny side of freezer paper.
THANK U SO MUCH for the kindness of a reply and the link. I will def b looking into the info, and I am so happy to have found u! I will be setting up a new craftroom/studio beginning in may, and when it's complete I hope to start making videos. u r very inspiring (and hilarious!) and I thoroughly enjoy watching ur relaxed (oh, happy accident!) process. thanks for sharing all ur immense talents with all of us fans!
I know this is old, but I do this too, but i just use gloss medium on the napkins on parchment paper. works great, i like to make inchies this way. You can add layers of ... whatever you have, and a layer of gloss, etc. Then pull it up and cut.
***** I keep an eye out for napkins everywhere I go but if you have a Tuesday Morning in your area, they have the best! Also, I can't reply to your UA-cam comments but if you'd like to fix that here's how: In the top right hand corner of any UA-cam page you will see a bell shaped icon. That's where your Google+notifications show up. If you click on the bell you'll see a gear icon at the top left. Click on that gear icon and it will show you your notification settings. The word "Settings" will be highlighted in blue...click on it. Your Google+ settings will open in a new tab. The first 2 options are settings for who can interact with you and your posts. Set both of those options to "Anyone". That will insure that any time you comment on a UA-cam video, your comment can be responded to.
Thanks for all the information! If you fuse the napkin to Heat and Bond, you can then adhere the napkin to whatever surface you wish without the mess or the wait.
I'm thinking that a spray adhesive under and a spray sealant on top would be good. Then you might be able to add your modpoge on top of that. The sprays are light and dry quickly. I haven't had a chance to try the YES! paste technique yet and was planning to try it this weekend. Glad I saw this video first or I would have thought it was just me.
shannon....in one of your videos you showed us the best way to glue pages together....front to back/back to front? i don't know which video it was. getting ready to glue some pages together in a composition book for a journal for a new reason. thank you!
Alternate front and back. That's a tip I got from Dede Willingham and it keeps your spine from getting too wonky. So just glue a couple of pages together in the front of the book, then flip to the back and do the same, then go to the front again, etc.
I wonder how book binding glue would work because it has like little to no water in it because its for book binding so it has to be low water for binding books, and i was just watching a video on that and how its great for decoupaging because it doesn't buckle pages like mod podge because of its low water content. Just a thought.
Pink Poodle Crafts or glossy accents maybe? I know you can use resin... ive done that before, and resin gives it a fantastic look and it becomes plasticy and transparent and beautiful... you just brush it on and do a couple coats and let it dry.
Pink Poodle Crafts Well nevermind my message about the book binding glue LMAO I realize after watching other videos that you likely know that hahaha. Sorry im not new per si to you channel but i havent watched THAT many of your videos so you know way more about glues than I would ;) But i do still wonder about the glossy accents and i would love to see you try the resin thing, thats a lot of fun and you get amazing results.
Pink Poodle Crafts LOL No worries, I'm just tickled that you're here and watching! Glossy Accents might work, I'm just not willing to experiment with mine cuz that stuff is kind of pricey and you'd have to use enough to make sure that it saturates that paper fibers....that's what causes the transparency. Resin papers are fabulous and I've made them before but it's not something that I do often because I am allergic to most resins! Maybe not allergic but "sensitive". Ice Resin is my favorite but every time I use it I get a rash on my face...even though it never touches my face. Strange, I know. Thank you so much for taking the time to watch and comment!
oh yeah dont use resin then lol unless its right before Halloween cause then you can have pretty papers AND a free halloween costume lmao! I am glad i found your videos... i actually have been told by folks who watch my videos that you and i have the same kinda of attitude lmao
vicki ross Apples and oranges. Daddy Van's is wax. YES is paste. They're completely different. If your Daddy Van's isn't drying, you're most likely using too much. On some papers it might not dry completely but it should soak in enough to be manageable.
Hey Shannon, I experimented with napkins and YES! Paste. Here are my findings. 1. The Workative Fixtive spray worked great against the stickiness. In fact it works great against the stickiness for Modpoge and gel mediums too. 2. Getting the surface wet made it sticky again until it dried. Maybe the "Final Fixtive" would work better. Not sure if it will peel off. I didn't get that far , because - 3. I must not have put enough YES! Paste on it. The paper seems really brittle - not like yours. I was working on DAJ pages this weekend, so didn't have time to experiment again. Thanks for the adventure.
Dianne Blake Thanks for being my mad scientist partner! I love it when other people test out ideas cuz it's usually not possible for one person to cover all possibilities. You're awesome!
Phoebe It would work just fine...as long as you make sure you never use any other type of wet adhesive. Since I'll be using mine in my JB5 with a buddy book, I want it to be versatile so that Kate can add stuff later without having to worry about it.
Enjoy your videos so much. Your laugh is exactly like my favorite's aunt! I just saw this video and haven't seen the earlier ones about gluing napkins to some kind of paper, I guess. I saw a tutorial for using Saran wrap between the napkin and computer paper with parchment paper on top and under to prevent the Saran Wrap from getting on the iron. I have used this technique and it works great and will let you cut out and decoupage. I have enjoyed this technique. Also, Saran Wrap brand doesn't work. I had to use the cheapest brand of Saran Wrap type wrap. Just a thought. And if you have mentioned this before, sorry to repeat!
I have an addition to my comment re: plastic cutting sheets. The one's from the dollar store (you get two for a dollar) seem to work better than the ones I got at the more expensive store. Hope this works for you.
Hello Shannon, I have spent all afternoon watching ur videos and loved each one. You have inspired me!! Could. U not just mod podge napkin onto deli paper, the gloss m/podge gives a lovely shine...with a plastic look. We don't have deli paper in oz...so I am trying baking paper. Keep up ur good work, I will be watching
Baking or parchment paper should work for you. Gloss Mod Podge will work...sort of. It doesn't make the napkins as transparent as the paste but it's not bad for an alternative!
Yikes!!! Thank you I used yes paste on my doll house so the whole doll house is sticky%! I’m going to try to seal it Matt medium - if you have any advice please help Love you4husband Hello honey I’m home he is a great gift ❤️
Hi Shannon Well you don't know till you try. Did you or can you use more YES! paste to do the over and under decoupage technique to adhere your pieces to your pages? Does it like itself after it's dry? . or does it re-wet itself and get yucky? I think the solutions you tried that worked look fine. I have a feeling you're not thru experimenting ;) Thanks for being a fearless leader and going where only brave crafters dare. lol Iris,SavedbyGrace
iris shubert Yes you can certainly use the paste for the over-under gluing even after it has dried. That would work fine as long as you don't decide to use another adhesive later. :) Since my original goal was to use these decals on my JB5 with a buddy book, I wanted it to be as versatile as possible since the book belongs to someone else.
You are quite the researcher; thanks for all the details! I was wondering about your jj that appears to be a phone book. How many pages do you need to glue together for it to work? Also, do you use yes paste to glue the pages together? Thanks Shannon; much appreciated!
Lynne Williams I usually glue 4-5 pages together in a phone book and I use whatever glue is handy. Some of them have YES! Paste, some have Mod Podge, the majority of them are probably diluted Elmer's white glue.
Didn't Daddy Van's give a translucent affect, also? Why not use it instead of YES? In Florida, the humidity is so variable that some days it loosens Mod Podge so that I can't use it at all. What about Collage Pauge which is entirely different make up that YES. Maybe that would be better. Thanks so much for all this experimentation and time!
mary w Daddy Van's does give a translucent effect but doesn't strengthen the napkin like YES! Paste does. There are lots of different methods for making decals, this is just another option. Thanks for watching!
I just came across your videos while looking for different uses of Yes! Paste. I have a question. What if you applied clear gesso to the entire back of the napkin & then sealed with it as well?
Thanks for your reply. I was so excited by the concept that I actually paused your video about half way through and posted my comment. I should've watched all the way to the end. I tried to comment after watching the entire video but had technical difficulties. I was wondering if you had tried sealing the napkins with a waxy sealant after the Yes paste but before gluing them down. I was thinking of something akin to Distress Micro Glaze. I had never heard of Daddy Van's before so I'm not familiar with it. It might work the same. I'm thinking what's needed is a hydrophobic sealant. I looked it up and didn't find anything in the top results that was in the crafty realm. But I did come across water proofing sprays like NeverWet. I have some of that stuff on hand so I thought I might try it. I just don't have any Yes paste or cool napkins. I very much enjoyed your series on napkin decals. I was trying to put a hold on anymore crafty purchases but I'm so excited by this idea that I have to try it. Thank you so much for your informative videos.
rtd1791 I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Water based adhesives will work as long as you use just a little bit. Any other type of sealant would have to render the napkin water resistant to work. I think something like Krylon spray sealer would do the trick.
I've been using parchment paper since I can't easily find deli paper. Parchment has been working great. QUESTION: if I'm not doing collage and I only want to adhere it to card stock other type of paper, what should I use? I must have missed it in the video. Thanks.
hi Shannon, I've only just recently found u, so I'm sorry this question is so long after this video...I've never before heard of daddy vans, so I looked it up following ur link, but am wondering how it's used in craftyland lol. I'm all for finding ANYTHING to keep mod podge from being sticky...I live in Indiana and we get a good bit of humidity. thanks for all the great vids and inspiration!
+jennifer hofbauer Hi Jennifer, I'm so glad we found each other! Daddy Van's is GREAT for putting over Mod Podge to keep it from sticking to stuff. I live in Houston so me and humidity know each other pretty well :) Look here for some more ideas on how to use Daddy Van's in your craft room: ua-cam.com/play/PLEBktQ6jtRkk2v5z23Q-0k37SEHxl3cCN.html
rtd1791 Then you would have a gel medium decal. I have a video for those too! I've made lots of decals in lots of different wasy but nothing else makes the napkins as transparent as the YES! Paste does. Everything else leaves a white haze on the napkin.
Hi Shannon, Celeste in Georgia. Would you tell me which of the Daddy Vans product you use. I went to the link you posted. Not found anymore so went to the Daddy Vans website. Don't know which product to choose. Thanks , got my YES glue. I bought this about 25 years ago and now it's turned a caramel color. Used it, give a vintage tone. I did buy a new jar though. Thanks.
Hi Celeste! I use Daddy Van's All Natural Beeswax Furniture Polish. It comes in unscented, lavender and orange oil. There's no difference in them other than the fragrance. Here's an updated link for ya: daddyvans.com/collections/all-natural-beeswax-furniture-polish-finishing-wax-1
Bridgton1 You can certainly use YES! Paste to do the decoupage technique in a collage situation. And that is fine as long as you make sure you never use a water based adhesive over it. Since I'm using my napkins in my JB5 with a buddy swap, I want my buddy to be able to add to her journal later on without having to worry about using a special adhesive. That's why I want my napkins to be "Mod Podge friendly".
Bridgton1 Yes it is. Actually it's more of a zibaldone, or hodge podge book rather than a traditional junk journal. I use it to wipe extra paint from my brushes, glue down scraps of leftover papers, test my markers and pens, try new techniques, etc. It's a mess. A fabulous, glorious mess!
Just curious, have you used the krylon sealer yet?? I finally got some napkins that I would like to use my Yes! paste on and found a can of Krylon varnish in my crazy craft room (is this the same as a sealer??) I am getting ready to try this out but was hoping you might have tried the Krylon!!
Scrapn Life Away Yes, I tried it with a clear spray sealer and it worked perfectly!!! I sprayed both sides, hung them to dry and now I don't even have to put waxed paper between them for storage...I can just stack them on top of each other. The spray sealer did the job for keeping the moisture out so you can Mod Podge to your heart's content!
Shannon Green that is fantastic news!! Looks like I'm gonna be playing with some napkins this week! and I even bought an extra jar of Yes paste because I love to use it to glue composition book pages together!! It's gonna be a creative fall season!! Thanks Shannon!!
It would probably work very similar to Vaseline in resist techniques, however I would not recommend it. Vaseline is cheap so I have no issues with applying it thick then scraping it off and throwing it away. That would be a shameful waste of Daddy Van's!
Carmen Hays The transparency is far better with the YES! paste than with any other medium or glue I've used. It's just another option for making decals with a little bit of a different look.
Ha! All ya gotta do is ask! It's not a replacement for gel medium decals or for just adhering napkins. It's simply another option for anyone interested in trying.
I have heard you say Daddy van's a few times now and I clicked on your link but it says page not found. Do you know if the product you are talking about is still made? and if so, which daddy van's product are you talking about? I hope you see this, I know this is an old video. Also, wouldn't the hot glue gun helper mat work for this or the even a good quality craft mat?? Thank-you for sharing this it was extremely informative. Have a very lovely day!!! AMB...Rose
Daddy Van is alive and well! The product I use is their All Natural Beeswax Furniture Polish. It comes in a couple of different scents but they all work the same. You can find Daddy Van's products here: daddyvans.com/
I found you can use Aleene's tacky glue on Potato Chip bags. Then cover with napkins. Drys quickly and then peels off easily. Any glue should work. Clean and cut open the plastic bags.
You can if you're just gluing them down. If you're decoupaging, adding layers, and might glue or paint over them then you'll want to use a different adhesive since Yes Paste will reactivate if anything water based touches it.
Am I the only one who thinks we are overlooking the obvious.... What about using the yes paste again to glue the papers down and cover it? Would this not work for what you are doing? I am still new to this and looking for lots of info, as I don't have the massive stash you ladies do and I can't afford a lot of mistakes or testings.Thank-you again if you answer yet another of my questions on an old video. Have a very lovely day!!! AMB...Rose
If all you need to do is glue it down and you're done, then that's an option. If it is part of a collage that you're going to add to later then another glue might be a better choice. If I add anything water based over the Yes Paste it will reactivate the paste. That's the nature of paste, it is not the best choice for collage or decoupage. That is why in a collage situations I prefer to use something that will allow me to paint over it if I choose.
Omg! How have I not found your channel before tonight!?!? New subscriber. Your husband cracked me up. Hi honey. I'm home. Hi. I'm filming. Oh well, since I've already said hello, I got the milk I was supposed to also! Lol.
Thank you for the super advice. I enjoyed learning today.. Only one piece of criticism. Your hand movements distracted me totally. It would be great to keep them still. Thanks nonetheless for the tutorial.
These actually have a little bit of a different look...more transparent than when you adhere them directly. Of course either way is great, just offering options.
I see; sometimes transparency is desirable vs something opaque. It's great that transparent decals can be made using napkins. I had no idea it was possible.
?why waste the yes paste putting on the parchment paper anyhow. Plan where you want the napkins just yes paste to your book. I was afraid your gorgeous plastic looking decal ala napkins were gonna be trouble but since you did all that work id get out the sewing machine and sew then down to other paper that you could use as focal points and glue down with any glue to your scrap journals.
But as your integrity as a crafter has made you the most adventurous and talented crafter - thanks for remedying the whole gorgeous processed items ive seen you do so far

👍👍👍

Fran ~ fun, but what are daddy bans?
Daddy Vans is an all natural beeswax furniture polish.
Did you try heat.
I've been using parchment paper since I can't easily find deli paper. Parchment has been working great. QUESTION: if I'm not doing collage and I only want to adhere it to card stock other type of paper, what should I use? I must have missed it in the video. Thanks.
To just stick them down, I recommend a sticky double-sided tape.
hi Shannon, I've only just recently found u, so I'm sorry this question is so long after this video...I've never before heard of daddy vans, so I looked it up following ur link, but am wondering how it's used in craftyland lol.
Thanks for sharing Shannon
Can you separate the ones that adhered together with your heat gun? I know that works with hot glue. Just a thought.
Lucia McGill I tried it with one of them....disaster. It just melted everything together even worse!
What if you just used one of the acrylic mediums to begin with? Left the Yes paste out altogether?
rtd1791 Then you would have a gel medium decal. I have a video for those too! I've made lots of decals in lots of different wasy but nothing else makes the napkins as transparent as the YES! Paste does. Everything else leaves a white haze on the napkin.
Excellent video, Shannon - I love it when artists - like you (;0) - discover and share new techniques and solutions
TheMeriAtelier Thanks so much Meri!
Here's an updated link for ya: daddyvans.com/collections/all-natural-beeswax-furniture-polish-finishing-wax-1
what about using yes paste on top?
Bridgton1 You can certainly use YES! Paste to do the decoupage technique in a collage situation. And that is fine as long as you make sure you never use a water based adhesive over it. Since I'm using my napkins in my JB5 with a buddy swap, I want my buddy to be able to add to her journal later on without having to worry about using a special adhesive. That's why I want my napkins to be "Mod Podge friendly".
is that a telephone book junk journal?
Bridgton1 Yes it is. Actually it's more of a zibaldone, or hodge podge book rather than a traditional junk journal. I use it to wipe extra paint from my brushes, glue down scraps of leftover papers, test my markers and pens, try new techniques, etc. It's a mess. A fabulous, glorious mess!
I find that half the fun is trial and error. (sometimes, ha-ha) This was a very helpful video, also love the napkins.
SockTrollQueen I'm all about trial and error...especially the error part!
Ha-ha.
Where do I get Daddy Vans, and have you tried spray polyurethane to do top coat after whole page is glued down?
Spray sealers are not my favorite, mainly because they need to be used outside. You can get Daddy Van's here: www.daddyvans.com/
Ty..just use a little..do you think it would make a good resist? I mean better than Vaseline for peeling paint affect?
It would probably work very similar to Vaseline in resist techniques, however I would not recommend it. Vaseline is cheap so I have no issues with applying it thick then scraping it off and throwing it away. That would be a shameful waste of Daddy Van's!
I am not understanding the need to make these. I just put mine down with gel medium. Is it for durability? Seems like a lot of work for that.
Carmen Hays The transparency is far better with the YES! paste than with any other medium or glue I've used. It's just another option for making decals with a little bit of a different look.
Thanks Shannon, I have been puzzled for days over this.
Ha! All ya gotta do is ask! It's not a replacement for gel medium decals or for just adhering napkins. It's simply another option for anyone interested in trying.
Shannon Green LOL I had asked and was referred to this video, just still had a mental block with it.
Ok, thank you. 😃
Phoebe You're welcome!
;)
Now I know that glue and paste are two different things. always learning something new with you, lol
Now we're all in the know!
I was wondering why not just use the yes paste. Your pages will not stick together
ha ha ha loved that your house and joined the video 😂😊
I found you can use Aleene's tacky glue on Potato Chip bags. Then cover with napkins. Drys quickly and then peels off easily. Any glue should work. Clean and cut open the plastic bags.
salsmanm2005 Great idea, thanks!
Can't you just use more yes paste to paste your decals on your project pages?
You can if you're just gluing them down. If you're decoupaging, adding layers, and might glue or paint over them then you'll want to use a different adhesive since Yes Paste will reactivate if anything water based touches it.
Helpful thanks!!!
Thanks for watching!
😉 Thanks for the Heads up 👍!
Oh ok that makes sense. Thank-you so much for getting back tome. Have a great day!!! AMB...Rose
Omg! How have I not found your channel before tonight!?!? New subscriber. Your husband cracked me up. Hi honey. I'm home. Hi. I'm filming. Oh well, since I've already said hello, I got the milk I was supposed to also! Lol.
He is such a goof! Thanks so much for watching :)
Thank you for the super advice. I enjoyed learning today.. Only one piece of criticism. Your hand movements distracted me totally. It would be great to keep them still. Thanks nonetheless for the tutorial.
Desire Pflugbeil So sorry my frantic hands distracted you but I do appreciate you taking the time to watch!
Never mind glues, did you get a kiss
Fiona van Buuren LOL Absolutely!
Well, Yes and no, yes and no, yes and no, LOL😂😂😂
Heh :)
🙂
I'm wondering, why bother to make a decal in the first place? Why not just mod podge the napkin to the paper in the first place?
These actually have a little bit of a different look...more transparent than when you adhere them directly. Of course either way is great, just offering options.
I see; sometimes transparency is desirable vs something opaque. It's great that transparent decals can be made using napkins. I had no idea it was possible.
Don't use the Yes paste. Start with mod podge it works great!
Thanks for watching!
Boogers! LOL
Cathy Rose Creations If you ever have the misfortune to feel it...you'd agree!
Your hand movement distracts from the video. Also makes me lightheaded.
Get to the point, too much babbling
If you watch my videos with your eyes closed and the volume on mute, I'm actually pretty darn spectacular.
you're confusing.
Probably because I'm confused most of the time.
