Seed viability of the alliums (onions, leeks, chives, garlic, and their relatives) is fairly short- usually 1 to 2 years. So it’s best to plant onion seeds the same year you buy them- they may not be good next year or three years from now.
Omg I was looking for something like this last year! Unfortunately this video never popped up until today. The germ temps and light requirements will be helpful, as my attempt last year was a fail and I’m sure it had those two things as top factors. Thanks 🥂
Nice video. I'm in Maine, about 45° latitude. For 2 years I bought plants. They grew well, but a bit expensive. $10-18 per bunch of about 60. Last year I tried from seed, just to see if it would work.. 1 order of Patterson pelleted seed from Johnny's, $7 1000 seeds, no big deal if this experiment failed, but they grew! Why pay $20 for 100 onions, when you can grow 800+ onions for $7. This year I'm all in. Already have 100 Ailsa Craig's started and sprouting 150 Patterson's just planted 3 days ago 150 Cabernet's just planted 3 days ago (red storage) Will be planting 150 Expression's this weekend when the Ailsa's come off the heat mat. An utterly charming presenter and presentation. Exactly where I am at with my onions the video was very clear and not boring.Whatever your name is great work and good luck. Will share on my FB and join your FB page. Thank you m8.
I've always wanted to try onion from seed. I've only used sets up to this point. Looking nice and green out there Jeff! I think our snow will be gone in about 2 weeks (unless we get another round :) ) can't wait
Do it Dave....once you go your own seeds, you'll never look back. Don't even do cell trays....while neater, you can just do one large pot with 100-200 seeds.....they just pull apart so easy and you can plunk them into the ground in the spring. Sooooooo easy. No more sets!
We love green onions. Since we live in SoCal, it's easy for use to grow year round. I prefer scallions/shallot because its' easier to grow. I don't like growing from seeds, as it takes way too long to harvest. Fastest way to grow onion is saving the sets or get store bought by using the bottom inch. Harvest usually takes about one month from planting. Since we only harvest the top green part, I have been harvesting for two months and still going. We will save some of the bulbs for next year. And last, try growing it in aquaponics, it's faster and you can grow more in smaller spaces. Smaller containers work fine too, especially if you can put it indoor in cold weather climate in the beginning.
@@funtimes20243 My wife like chives more too. We grow them in containers, and it always comes back sometimes in the winter because we don't have frost. Been in the pots for 3 years now. Grows back really fast after cuttings, just like weeds.
Onion seeds of a named variety are quite important for 2 more reasons than you mentioned: 1. the long term storage quality (preferably 4 to 6 months) and 2. the shape of the mature onion (a mature onion with a recessed or convex root bottom is poor to handle when processing in the kitchen).
I juXZ for my northern Zone 6 clime. I started two flats of Heirloom Walla Walla from Seeds of Change. Not big on saving seeds but I do like SOC's mylar resealable packaging as I al5ways have a library of seeds and in a stable climate (just not wet). On that note, how many seeds do you drop in each hole? I know one is never enough and if they're easy to separate I figured I'd put several over the 2" square and top with peat. I grow most things in bulk and close packed for thinning into cups or peat pods as they grow because I give a ton away to neighbors and at foodbanks, so singles is cool for a lotta veggies. I think these will be my early onions as it's late march and hot summer will be here in 3 months but maybe I'll make sets and can't wait to do a winter planting. Also trying to get a rhubarb and asparagus patch in.
Great tips. I started some onions from seed in my greenhouse. Are onions true to seed? Also, I assume I can grow them over winter in a heated greenhouse?
Onions can be both true to seed as well as not. Depends on whether you start with a bybrid plant or an heirloom one. For growing, onions bulb up due to increasing day length. That's the clue they get. I'm not sure what effect growing them in a greenhouse will do.
I hear you Jane. Short day seeds planted in the fall and overwintered...or try advancing some in the winter and squeaking out a quick crop before the hot weather comes!
Oh wow. This was highly informational. Not only am I way late on starting these, I also really need to look over what soil I use because my last batch grew mold and the germination rate was way lower than expected... I'm still gonna try one more time this spring, though. Your advice will be very useful for that.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Thank you! I live in Sweden and it’s been a really slow spring this year (just had our first frost free night) so I think it’ll be doable. The Ruth Stout bed I’m planning on planting them in should help insulate a bit from the heat of summer and prevent them from drying out which I’ve understood is important.
Wow! Perfect timing as I was thinking about sowing onion seeds for the first time! So now I know how to do it, thank you! Will you be doing a video on onion sets as I have some of them as well and have never grown either? ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️
Awesome Fiona, its nice when that works out!! I stopped doing sets about 3 seasons ago. Once I mastered growing my own starts from seeds, doing sets just seemed like a complete step backwards for me. Sets are easy though...they are basically half grown already! Plant them in the spring after your last frost date, harvest the onions when the shoots begin to fail 10-12 weeks later. :-)
Thanks for explaining the onion loop better. I am about to do a video and I want to be able to get over that sunlight and loop issue. I'll see your FB group too.
What tips do you have for fertilizing onions while they are still in trays indoors? When should I start fertilizing? How often? What is the preferred fertilizer? Can I start the seeds in a seedling mix with worm castings, and not have to fertilize later?
Thank you for a great video! I planted my Walla Walla onion seeds on July 20th, they germinated in 4 days and are under grow lights for 16 hours a day. They are in a rectangular seed tray instead of individual cells. I have been cutting them down to about 3-4". Do I need thin them out at this point? When would be a good time to plant outside here in Victoria?
"You are a best on the West" i am old timer 68Yr. "city boy" and will try what you said and see how it turns out, thanks for the tips. By the way which are better seeds GMO or Heirloom
Too kind Stan! The average person can't even buy GMO seeds, so don't even worry about them. Heirloom varieties though....always my first choice! Best of luck this year!
Damn, I planted yellow Spanish sweet utah onions (long duration) in the fall. Are my onions toast or do I have a chance that they will bulb? I'm in Charlotte NC if it makes a difference
You should toss in that it’s important to cure them after you pick them for slicing onions. I use a metal screen and leave them to air dry and harden off.
I am in western Washington, so long days of sunlight now. I have onions in my garage that are growing like crazy from the low light of the one window 30 feet away. So I am guessing these onions need low light. I can’t control the sunlight outside. Should I just pot them and grow them in the garage? If I plant them outside they will get too much light and not produce well, correct?
Hey Julie, its getting to the point where we can plant onions outside now. Let them experience the gradual increase in daylight hours. That's how the bulbs form. Once all danger of frost is gone, get these guys in the ground. :-)
Any advice for me, I live in midwest Brazil. It's summer now, Very hot(35degrees celsius). Here the root veggies are usually planted in winter. Tried onions last year with no success. Do I have chances to succeed if I start the seeds now and replant them outside in April?
I would try the opposite of temperate growers.... Pre start indoors during your hottest months, then transplant outside when the weather is cooler. Really cut the light indoors to 6-8 hours max so when they do go outside, the 12 hour days will seem like a lot.
I live in Seattle. Obviously North. Do I need to put my onion starts in seeds under a grow light?. It's so cloudy here I don't think we're getting 10 hours of Sun. Or does Ambience sunlight count?
Hey susan... Same climate as me. No, what you want is low light now.... That's good. It'll be time to plant them outside soon and the increase in light will start the bulb production process
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms super AWESOME...moving them out from under the grow light now . Thanks for the tip on cutting the tops off. I ruined a bunch of mine already. I hadn't seen that in anybody else's videos. I learned something new from yours and have now subscribed and we'll dive into your videos

Good day sir i always ended up dying my seedlings. When it reach 3 inches high after a week it dies. Can you determine whats wrong on my way of planting onions? Im from the Philippines
@@aminadanielle925 they can grow in 90F......but whether your seeds are conditioned g for that and how big the jump is would be grower and situation specific.
First time grower question for the pros. So is it far fetched to not want to purchase onions from the grocery store but rather grow them?? Because you can really only grow them seasonally right?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I love that you are so on the ball with replying, is is very much appreciated. Thank you, I will move them now and then wait for them to grow a bit more before transplanting
I started onion seeds for the first time this year about 10 days ago while Antarctica was vacationing here in Oklahoma & Texas. They've been popping up over the last few days and there's something so cute about them. I'm glad you talked about the loop thing and trimming them. That wouldn't have occurred to me, but it makes sense. My light is on a different cycle than what the onions will need, so hopefully it won't throw them off too much. But I'm really glad you explained that part, too. I'll be sure to set it up correctly when I'm able to expand and get more lights. Thanks so much! This is really an excellent video!

Sets are easy though...they are basically half grown already! Plant them in the spring after your last frost date, harvest the onions when the shoots begin to fail 10-12 weeks later. :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms good point! I have bought them so may as well plant them, but thanks for instructions so helpful! ☘️
@@fionaharvey2720 definitely plant them up Fiona! Let me know how they turn out for you!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms oh yes I will thank you I appreciate the help! ☘️
Thanks for explaining the onion loop better. I am about to do a video and I want to be able to get over that sunlight and loop issue. I'll see your FB group too.
Thank you for the growing tips!
Nice video! does this apply also to leeks? i am in zone 9
Leeks are even easier because we're not so focused on them "bulbing up". :-)
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Super 👌 thanks for the swift response
Can I plant onions at the end of August in Japan where the weather is OK until December ish?
@TheRipeTomatoFarms is there a point I should increase the hours the grow lights are on the onions before planting them outside?
I love this! thank u so much your videos are amazing
Hey thanks for that, appreciate the support! :-)
What tips do you have for fertilizing onions while they are still in trays indoors? When should I start fertilizing? How often? What is the preferred fertilizer? Can I start the seeds in a seedling mix with worm castings, and not have to fertilize later?
That's my question too... need answers!
Do you keep them at 3inches right up until you plant them out?
"You are a best on the West" i am old timer 68Yr. "city boy" and will try what you said and see how it turns out, thanks for the tips. By the way which are better seeds GMO or Heirloom
Too kind Stan! The average person can't even buy GMO seeds, so don't even worry about them. Heirloom varieties though....always my first choice! Best of luck this year!
Great stuff thank you 👍
Cheers, thanks for watching!
Great stuff. If I’m in Tampa Florida I have to grow the long day? If you can get me a bit more info for my area I would appreciate it.
Short day is best for you guys Yoya. Plant in the fall and let the onions grow through the coolest part of your year.
Damn, I planted yellow Spanish sweet utah onions (long duration) in the fall. Are my onions toast or do I have a chance that they will bulb? I'm in Charlotte NC if it makes a difference
Ok. I use heat matts while covered to germinate. Your throughts? Im in zone 6b Sarnia Ontario Canada
I do too... But after germination, I take them off
So you cover and mat?
@@chadvollrath1760 I use a heat mat with a clear dome cover until they sprout, then no heat and eventually no dome
You should toss in that it’s important to cure them after you pick them for slicing onions. I use a metal screen and leave them to air dry and harden off.
thank you for the tips glitterbombs
I will grow onions from seeds this year!
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms thank you so much for your reply. I'm sowing some tomorrow. And see how it goes. 🤞
THANKS!
Cheers Howard
Oh no! My onions are just teeny two week old babies but .i had the growlight set for 16 hours. Will that doom them?
Have been gardening for decades with poor results on onions. Never heard or read about limiting light. Won’t stop trying! Hope finally get some tennis ball size gems
Its all about the variety you choose, and the day lengths/timing....master those and you're golden. You got this don! 🙂
Good day sir i always ended up dying my seedlings. When it reach 3 inches high after a week it dies. Can you determine whats wrong on my way of planting onions? Im from the Philippines
Too warm? Over watering maybe?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms to you think its better not to water the seedlings for a week? Thanks for the reply sir
You're keeping them too wet or you are fetting root rott from a bacteria in your soil
I think you are adorable and I wish I had someone like you in my life :)
Thanks! Much appreciate. Stay happy! :-)
After they’re germinated, can I place them outside in temperatures that reach 90?
@@aminadanielle925 they can grow in 90F......but whether your seeds are conditioned g for that and how big the jump is would be grower and situation specific.
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms it would go from 75ish to 90, would that be a big shock, or should I just start them outside?
When should you start feeding after indoor germination?
Do short day onion seedlings need grow lights? I live in Florida. Zone 9.
If you can supplement with full spectrum lights, its always better.
Thanks
First time grower question for the pros.
So is it far fetched to not want to purchase onions from the grocery store but rather grow them?? Because you can really only grow them seasonally right?
To clarify, once they've germinated, should I remove them from the sunny windowsill and put them in a place with more indirect light?
Yes, unless you are ready to start the bulbing process, keep the light lower until its time to plant outside
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I love that you are so on the ball with replying, is is very much appreciated.
Thank you, I will move them now and then wait for them to grow a bit more before transplanting
@@fah6601 Best of luck! What kind are you growing?
@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I'm not sure, the packet just said "onions"
I started onion seeds for the first time this year about 10 days ago while Antarctica was vacationing here in Oklahoma & Texas. They've been popping up over the last few days and there's something so cute about them.
I'm glad you talked about the loop thing and trimming them. That wouldn't have occurred to me, but it makes sense.
My light is on a different cycle than what the onions will need, so hopefully it won't throw them off too much. But I'm really glad you explained that part, too. I'll be sure to set it up correctly when I'm able to expand and get more lights.
Thanks so much! This is really an excellent video!
