- Growing Onions Made Easy! Onions are hardy, low-maintenance plants that require very little for such a big burst of flavor. Unfortunately, they can give you trouble when I comes to getting actually bulbs at harvest time.
Well, until now. In this video, I'll show you the 3 ways to plant Onions, including an in-depth tutorial on how I've been planting my Onions no-till and no-dig for the last 10 years. Timing and variety is everything, and by the end you'll be an Onion Master, harvesting giant bulbs like its nothing! :-)
2021 is the Year of the Garden! We deserve it after the last little while, and growing our own food and self sufficiency is just the reward we need to get back on track!

@@halburd1 that's a two year process.... Onions are biennial plants. What gave you the impression I was raising the onions for seeds?

I am wanting to grow onions from seed. A number of people have commented that onions are biennial. Others don't mention it. This in itself is confusing. My impression is if they are biennial they take two seasons (years) to fully mature. Is this correct? What do you do after the first year? Do you harvest and store them through winter for replanting or leave them in the ground?

Wow! This is the most complete specific crop video I've ever seen on every aspect of starting through harvesting and storage, taking into account location and other variables. Extremely well done, economical in terms of time and commentary at the same time extremely thorough. Thanks very much, I am learning from you how to grow strawberries this year, I am more confident and enjoying picking my crop and sharing. I know how to look after them the whole year, so not surprised to have you now show me how to grow onions, I planted them too deep this year. What about onion fly. They decimated my beautiful long onions and red onions last year.
Thanks man, I learned several tips that contributed to my terrible onion performance this year... Spacing, too deep, over fert. being some big ones. The learning curve is steep sometimes haha.

For the starts yeah....seeds can go in as soon as last frost is past.....but I wait just that extra little bit for the starters. :-)

I live in Texas as well. While others still have snow on the ground, we already have plants in the ground for a month.
And now I know exactly where I went wrong. Thank you for the video. I'd given up on onions and garlic all together. But I can see where I went wrong and it makes absolute sense why I would not get onions like I imagined I would.

That was a fantastic amount of worthwhile info. Thanks for that!. Do you ever trim the tops on your onions so that the bulbs grow larger? We always just bent them over, but this year I kept them trimmed once in a while. this is a first for me and I haven't actually checked any yet. It is too early. Enjoyed and take care!

I cut and freeze tops as pieces get top heavy. I keep my onions in the ground for 2 years as I live in Tennessee. I have short raised beds. 6 inches or shorter. Last year's plants are giving me next year's seeds. I did 50 new plants from sets that will stay in the ground until next year's harvest and seeds. I probably will not do Broccoli next year as it has lots of leaves but the heads came up no larger than my thumb print and go right to seed. Not even enough for a mouthful. Cauliflower heads have a slightly bigger head but the Earwigs loved the Cheddar one and my white ones are turning purple. Cabbage hopefully are doing good but next year will use bug covers as they are after the outer leaves. Pak Choy got all ate up and then went to seed. First tomatoes got eaten by something as my husband did not pick them as I asked. I had a back operation and he is now in charge.

What a great video. I have planted onions one time and had great results, but I’ve been hearing a lot of people talk about poor onion crops and difficulty growing them so now I’m worried that I just had beginners luck. Hopefully this year will go as well.

QUESTION: I'm confused why you wait 1 month after first frost date to move outside.
Thanks for that Michael! Its all going to depend on your zone and climate, but what I try to do is avoid harvesting in the heat of summer. So I either plant them really early for a June harvest....or wait that extra month for a September harvest. That way I'm never harvesting in the hottest part of the year. Cool-harvested onions just taste sooo much sweeter!
Definitely doing seeds next year. My starts didn't do great, might be my husband watered them too much. But he promised not to next year. LOL. Homegrown cantaloupe for breakfast. Have a great weekend we are off alert now so much less stress.

I never see you use a hose , always a water can. Is there a reason for this? Btw, your info is always spot on and appreciated! Blessings!
Mostly for mobility tammy. I like to use my watering time as the time I inspect the crops and just see what's going on with the garden. I do have hoses, but I don't get that intimate interaction with the plants. :-)

Yeah, I've done that too....like garlic. They can still grow, just not ideal.
Excellent video. I am getting a few good ones for the first time but you answered a few of my questions that no one has ever covered before. I also really like the bit about the fall rye. I have been wanting to try using it but was unclear if it would still grow if it was just cut. I gather you plant it in the fall and cut it down in the spring. I like the craft paper to reinforce killing off the rye.

With regard to "onions hate competition" I hear other well respected gardeners say to plant nightshade (tomatoes, pepper) in between your onions as it will benefit them
The onions in my beds are enjoying hanging out with tomato and eggplant 👍
The tomato give shade which helps reduce water evaporation from the substrate

Perfect video for me. I planted winter rye last fall and I'm ready to plant onion slips. I was thinking now what? It has really shot up this last week. I like the idea of the craft paper and covering with compost. You got me interested in growing my own from seed, maybe next year so I can try several varieties. I only plant a 4x4 bed in my small garden. A small bundle is more than I need so I only buy one variety.

With little success, but I’m not giving up.
I live in the upper middle section of the US that ‘should’ enable me to grow all types.
I want to grow a long keeping onion and one that I can collect garlic scapes from. This may be the same kind. Idk.
I love the idea of having a double harvest from a single vegetable.

I've always just divided them at the time of planting outside Darren, never before. Always works.

I have green onions that are two years old out in the back. They came from store-bought. Snip about an inch off the bottom, dry for a day or two them replant. They even ovrWintered tho last year it was mostly rain and cold enough but no freezing. [[North Carolina]]. Tried it with bulb onions but no joy yet. I do have two Leeks I planted a month ago that are now full grown-waiting to see if the bolt. My seed onions, well, I got one. Might need better seeds but my raised beds [[still in progress of building]] were started in June so everything is late for Summer, just started Fall to Winter veggies.

Did both sets and grew onions from seed. All sets I grew laid over while my onions from seed are still standing.
Also my sets flowered so can only be dehydrated not good for long term storage.
Next year I will not do sets. Will grow them all by seed!
Ugghh...been there. That's also the problem with sets from a biennial plant....they can be fooled into thinking its their 2nd year (which it actually is) and then they go to flower instead of producing. Yuck! Sorry to hear that!

I live in Chicago area. When should I start my onion seeds indoors? When should I plant the plants outside? My last killing frost is May 15. Thank you!
As short day onions bulb at 10-12 hrs daylight, there is nothing stopping them from doing that at higher latitudes, they will do fine at 14-16 hrs as well. The 'problem' as i understand it is that say at 52 degrees latitude, we hit 10 hrs of daylight already mid februari, when it is still freezing even. As we typically sow onions in end-december/januri, the onion hasn't really had time yet to develop leaves, before it starts bulbing, leading to a small bulb. So I tried sowing short day onions (nameless red onion seeds from philippines) at 52 degrees latitude. Before the winter, so they had some more time to grow. That gave me quite decent bulbs

Super helpful video. I planted my first onion and garlic sets last fall (zone 8 Oregon) and kept under a row cover. Everything is looking fantastic. Long green leaves 2+ feet. Flower stalks on a few but not many. I pulled a couple to check and they just look like leeks. No bulbs forming (yet). Will the bulbs form? Do I need to wait longer or will the plants just bolt?
Cheers Kris! The onions definitely shouldn't be flowering. They are biennial and flower in their 2nd year of growth, which is WELL after we'd harvest the bulbs. Garlic does flower, its called the scape. They are TASTY! But they do need to be removed because they are a drain on the plant. Check this out: ua-cam.com/video/_RkFvfHOkTk/v-deo.html
Can you tell me what you are using for mulch? Chopped straw? Do you make it yourself or purchase that on the Island?
I noticed that once the bulbs grew, they were sticking up out of the dirt, uncovered. Do you need to mulch them more to keep them covered as they mature? Also, are the stems edible?
Hey Katie, no, the bulbs don't need to be covered at all. My best ones always grow on top of everything, soil and mulch! And yes, the stems are totally edible.....they taste just like green onions!
I cut a purple onion and left it water and when it started rooting I planted it outside and it’s already sprouting on top. However, my germinating Spanish onion seeds are still not sprouting :/ I guess because they are germinating outside and it’s been 80-90f over here. I’m going to move them under shade to see if that helps.
Yeah Elena, onion seeds are a strange one, germinating at much cooler temps than normal vegetable seeds!

Watched a time laps video. Where you could watch the roots The roots grew down to a good 9 inches. Your soil may for some reason maybe compacted. I live right at the transition from Short to medium day. Any tips for my situation. In my area. Dixondale. Usually their onions are about 50/50 some larger some small. Have heard other You tuber talking about how small they are this season. They are the size of a small drinking straw.
how deep of a container for onions? I have Alison Craig (the big one) as well as smaller red onions. I also have leeks, which I wish to place in containers. Both the onions and leeks are currently in small pots ready to be transplanted
Help! I'm growing walla walla onions in CA 9b, on elevated planters (because I'm old and refuse not to garden although I have a bad back :) It is now mid April, and a few of the onions are staring to bolt because the weather is crazy. 90 degrees last week, and 56 degrees high tomorrow. Should I remove the flower? Or is there no help? Love your videos :)
Tried 3 times to grow pickling onions and failed. They grew fast and leggy. Same with dill, parsley, and turnip. Seems like some plants may have a different way to get past that part as a seedling. Other plants like pickling cucumbers, peppers, beans and cantaloupe are doing great. Any tips on the first 4 plants that went bad would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Your videos are great and sure helped me and my son get into gardening as this is my first year.
Thanks for your video. You mentioned that the light levels need to be intense but no more than 8 hours a day. Does this eight hour period start immediately after sprouting or do you have to wait till the onion reaches a certain size?
If you plan to let it go to flower and harvest the seeds do you need to keep watering it during that time?

Hi Isador.... Your onions should never flower in the first place. Onions are a biennial plant, flowering in their SECOND year of growth. The only way they can flower is by growing them from sets that haven't been stored properly. From seeds, your onions should never flower before harvest.

Onion seeds don't need stratification...

Nope... They are biennial and usually need two years to FLOWER. Not to bulb up for a harvest. :-)

Do you have to trim them if they fall over,?
Probably not HAVE to...but its nice so that the leaves don't rot, get disease, cause the bulbs to grow sideways, etc etc. If they aren't flopping over leave them be....if they are, trim! :-)
Great video. Quick question. My bulbs are just starting to form but the growth of greens on top seem too be a little too much and they are falling over. Is it okay to trim the green portion? Info: Grown from seed. Long day variety. I think they are called Patterson. Intercropped w/ my tomatoes so they are probably receiving more fertilizer than needed due to feeding the 'maters.
