  • Yesterday I uploaded a video, "Can the Fancy Feast Stove Be Made Larger?" where I made and tested a larger version of the ''Fancy Feast'' stove.
From that video I recieved a comment where ArtBeHereNow suggested, "Hiram, try the other way. I used a Vienna-Sausage can (same dia as cat food but? taller) It takes the whole tomato paste can w/o cutting any off ( I took the rim off to make easier to marry to the other one) It boiled 64 oz. of water (the x-large Klean Kanteen full) in 17 minutes with 2 oz alcohol."
Since I have the cans that ArtBeHereNow suggested using I thought I would put together Art's stove version and test it.
I thank ArtBeHereNow for the stove suggestion,
and I thank you for watching my videos,
    Hiram

I think probably the short, wide stove worked faster because more linear wick means more linear inches of flame, which in turn means more heat.

I dig a hole & put the stove in this makes it less likely to tip over.

This was my fifth iteration of a Viana sausage can and has worked perfectly for me. Thank you so much.

Probably won't boil any faster but it will hold more fuel so it can burn longer. Mine burns almost 30 minutes on 4 ounces. I've made hamburger helper and chili on it. That includes browning the meat and cooking the pasta without refilling. I like it!

1/2" rows Hiram. I some times use that rig at home to boil water for coffee. Fairly fuel thrifty rig, usually only takes 1/2 oz. of alcohol to boil 2 cups of water. I use a wide anodized aluminum 3 cup pot from Trail Designs and a crinkly Zelph windscreen.

Great info, really appreciate all the effort you put into these videos and testing suggestions. I can't see why anyone would purchase a stove when you can make this so easily.

What I get from this is that the tuna mod is better for faster boil for rehydration and the Vienna for making pasta since it keeps lit longer. Thanks for sharing! I made my own fancy feast after your vid and I love mine.

Thanks Hiram. To be fair I was using a close fitting windshield and outdoors at 90-deg here in Tx. I had more robust flames. I think maybe because I'm using the real thick carbon felt from Lowes (had a hard time getting it in there). Looks like you are using a thinner felt, maybe. One thing that I noticed when working with fiberglass cloth was that more folds and thus more material crammed in there the more flames I got (with the more material) Thanks again !

I'm going to try one, and to prime the wick (I use blue shop paper towels) I'll tilt and roll it after filling it with fuel. I like that it burns cooler than the tuna can version, because the extended burn time should allow it to cook longer with less chance of scalding. If it also works well with one ounce of fuel, this could be a much more versatile setup. I tried the "Supercat" version with the Vienna Sausage can (Just two rows of holes punched around the top) and it took longer to boil 500 ml of water than the "Fancy Feast Supercat."

i built one from tuna can and a little orange can but cut the can off on bottom and split orange can up side and rolled it up to fit my coffee cup and used cotton balls instead of felt

I bought an Alocs alcohol stove with it's small stand and while looking for videos about it came across your site which I find really intersting with the tests really well put together. I have now made 2 fancy feast type stoves, one with the small cat food can and tomato paste insert and one using a wider tuna type can with a small meat can inside. I did a boil test side by side and the wider one one was aboot 20 seconds faster to the boil. Both were just over the 6 minute mark. I really enjoy your stuff and look forward to seeing more. I now want to compare the boil times between the Alocs and the tuna fancy feast. I am based in England.

I wonder if drilling/punching a few holes 1/4 to 1/2 way up the tomato can would help with getting that wick initially "primed".

6:02 to boil - 21:00 to run out ~15 minutes of extra boil, a very efficient stove, more than the cat food version.

I enjoy our videos very much, thank you.
I built and have used a FF stove for several years. It's the only alcohol stove I use.
I've been wanting to replace the pot stand can with hardware cloth just to see how it will affect the burn, boil times. Have you tried hardware cloth?
    Thanks again!

there is more wick surface area on the shorter wider can. That makes for a larger flame. I added more carbon felt to the flatcat lynx stove and it made a larger flame also. I like the large flame long duration burn. I have snow melting in mind.

Hi Hiram! Would old, worn out socks work as a wick for the fancy feast stove?

    • @MrLightPanda
      @MrLightPanda 6 років тому +1

I have only used paper towels and they work fine. I bet cloth would work pretty good. I think Hiram did a test with old blue jeans.

  • @guyfihi

Hi Hiram. Sorry to change the subject, but I think it would be interesting to do a boil test on the Evernew Titanium stove using a hardware cloth stand. I sometimes use a four row hardware cloth stand at home with this stove which puts it about the same distance above the stove as the Evernew Cross Stand (1/2 inch.) It would be easy for a person to make if they already have some hardware cloth.

I made one of these stoves and really enjoy it. I will be making more, for sure. I noticed with my first burn, that the lining on the inside of the cat food can turned to ash. I wonder if there would be any advantage to putting both the tomato paste can and the cat food can in the outdoor grill at 500 degrees for a little while to burn off all that coating on the insides of the cans before assembling and using.

Hi Kent. IMHO I think that would just be a waste of fuel. Better to use the grill for hot dogs. 8-) I just make sure I'm not in a closed space when I burn the stove for the first time.

Hi, Can you think ofr any other wicking material that is highly available, to build this stove in an emergency situation? Even if it only lasted 10 burns, availability would count for a lot. Perhaps folded cloth? If you extinguish a kerosene lamp before fuel burnout, the cotton wick lasts a long time.

I've had good success using blue shop paper towels as the wick. Jujitsu2000 gets credit for this idea, and he has many entertaining UA-cam videos.

I made one of these, and got no better boil time results than the standard Fancy Feast, either. I took it apart, and converted the Vienna Sausage can to a plain Super Cat stove with 15 holes in the top row near the rim, and 15 in the row below. It never did bring the water to a boil like my Super Cat would, but simmered nicely and ran for over 35 minutes on just 1 oz. of Heet for fuel! I'm guessing you could get nearly a 2 hour total run time if you were to fill it up to just under the holes like you would on a standard Super Cat. Maybe we could call it the Jumbo Simmer Cat? :) That would be a pretty good snow melter, wouldn't it?

Can just use strips of soda can with the same height of the external can, with vertical grooves spaced ~15-20mm.
The grooves create capillarity and act as wick.

You might like to check out a new design I've posted with internal and external flame jets. It works best with ethanol, heats from the moment it's lit, doesn't need a pot stand and allows easy retrieval of unburnt fuel for later use. It also works well with charcoal
