  • Outdoor motion sensors actually exist! Local Smart Home hub's cost £25, Apple Homekit support is a thing, and Zigbee is actually cheap. How did I miss this??

    Ikea's Tradfri setup is finally good, and the Ikea Smart home range is finally worth talking about. You might think I'm late to the party, but that's because I assumed Tradfri still sucked.... it doesn't. The Ikea tradfri motion sensor is now one of my best pieces of smart home equipment.

      You're probably aware of this, but advanced home assistant (or zigbee2mqtt) users can pair motion sensors/remotes/buttons to most lights/etc - it's in the Zigbee spec, and they expose enough advanced features to link it up manually.

    Glad your view on the IKEA stuff has improved. I use IKEA and Sonos around my home because the two integrate with scene controls etc. It makes sense for me to keep things simple with as few systems as possible and the IKEA stuff does everything I need including smart blinds. Setup can be a bit buggy but once you get your head around it it all works reliably for me.

      I'll be interested to see if you'll still be able to use it in 'local only' mode. One of the big things that attracted me to the Tradfri setup was that it didn't need my life story to switch a few lights on.

  • @thedayb4tomorrow
    @thedayb4tomorrow 2 роки тому +3

    The tradfri shortcut button can actually be really powerful as well. With a somewhat recent firmware it supports press, hold, and double tap. I've set it up as the main light switch for most of my rooms with a normal tap toggling the lights (with some HA magic they get toggled on at a time dependent brightness), a long press turning them on dim regardless of the time, and a double press turning them on bright regardless of the time. Has the big advantage compared to the big remote that you will never accidentally press the wrong button, even in the dark, because there only is one 🙂

      Mmm that’s what I thought but I’ve fought with it for two days now trying to get this to work. The only way I seem to be able to get it into homekit is to pair it with a light or socket or whatever. I can’t seem to get it to add as device on its own. I can SEE it in homekit and apparent,y set up automations with other devices it just never detects motion unless it’s paired with another ikeas device. I’m sure I must be doing something wrong but can’t work out what.

    Hi Paul, you can use a remote and motion sensor together with a bulb without a hub. But you need to link the remote and motion sensor with each other. Soooo…
    1. Reset everything. Just in case.
    2. Link the remote to the bulb.
    3. Link the motion sensor to the remote. (Not the bulb!)
    Done!
    Ofcourse you can also link the motion sensor to the bulb first and then connect the remote to the motion sensor. Just do it how you want it to do.

    Great video. I've been quite happily using an Ikea bulb attached to a Tuya ZigBee hub. The only limitation around Ikea bulbs in the UK is that they're all Edison screw, whereas the UK overwhelmingly uses bayonet fittings for ceiling lights. Sure, you can change them (as I did), but it's a shame the don't doing any Bayonet fittings.

      The problem with the bayonets is the they’re extremely UK-specific (well.. probably plus Ireland, but you know what I mean.) they’re probably on the list to produce at some point, but the range would have to be popular enough to make the volume in *just* the British isles worth it.

    The Controller Devices (Ikea' name is Steering Device ) can be all paired together, the device you want to copy needs it's pairing button pressed first then the second device, watch the LEDs & keep both pressed untill both LEDs go out. Now both Controllers, Remote Sensors will be able to switch the bulbs, like stairwells etc.

    just put the new motion sensor/ remote to the already existing motionsensor/remote and pair it and it wil kopie itself and now you have two remotes/motionsensors to control one lamp and if the existing sensor/remote already has multible light on it they will al work. (and if you have a hub it wil recognize it too) I already use a motionsensor and remote together because it want to dim it without using a phone or my voice and i have 2 motionsensors for my hallwaylight so it wil turn on if im upstairs and downstairs

    Technically, you can pair the motion sensors and buttons to other zigbee devices. Both dual project and do not only direct binding, but also via groups (as you noted later). Most zigbee devices and be bound to a group by ID... If you're using conbee for Z2M, or Tasmota for Z2T. Anything that lets your directly setup a group binding via command line.

Then power them off, like kill power to the bulb. Then you can pair the buttons and sensors without issue. You do have to control the bulbs etc using home assistant even if the command is coming from an ikea button or motion sensor.

    Assuming I have an ikea hub, can I use the remote to start an Alexa routine? For instance, can a click from the remote get Alexa to turn on several lights (some ikea, some wifi?)

    I'm in the process of installing a motion sensor to control an external light and am looking for both motion and dusk-to-dawn functionality in one. You highlighted this on thr IKEA product, but are there any other sensors that have both features? The product descriptions are woefully short on this topic, though I'd think it would be an expected feature, even for indoor lighting (especially with the D2D switched at the sensor like you demonstrated, because I can't seem to build an Alexa routine that will condition the motion sensor trigger on time-of-day).

    I actually tried buying a couple IKEA Trådfri things to test if they worked with my Zigbee hub (Nedis/Tuya). The bulbs work just fine, but the dimmer/switch doesn't appear in the app at all. I'm curious how you managed to make it work for you.

    Bought the controller and lights for the pax system I installed into my daughters bedroom. Ohh the ZigBee in deed, however they have ir sensors built in which allow it to see the door. So it doesn't need the ZigBee at all for that to work perfectly.

    I don`t use smart bulbs anymore ( Wife/Kid unfriendly ), but I use their repeaters a lot as all their stuff works flawless with HA.
    Spoiler Alert, the very choosey Aquara Devices can use Ikea repeaters, have probably 6 of them in my house :)
    Hope they do at some point Wall switches etc, they would make a killing with that too.
    Their Smart lamp is great if you want Sonos sound for cheap...just sad that the lamp part is actually not smart :(

    I have to comment on this one. I have had Ikea smart home stuff for several years now. I like the cloudlessness of it. But there are few things I hate about it. One is that every time Ikea updates the hub, my HA loses connection to it and goes haywire if I don't ro a integration reload and/or a hub restart (I have a wifi outlet controlling the hub). Also I have not been able to get the buttons and motion sensor to talk to HA if they are connected to the hub. One thing I have waited for a long time is that Ikea would start to include more sensors to their line up. Currently there are no temperature sensors, door sensors, vibration sensors.....etc. But overall after buying about 10 bulbs and bunch of buttons and motion sensors, only one buldb and one dimmer has broken during the past +5 years.

    Use the hub to bridge to Alexa, google, homekit, homeassistant and do all the automation in it. You can even pair third party devices to your ikea hub and they work with everything but Homekit.

    I can anyone advice not to use Ikea Smart Home gear. Made the mistake of using it all over my flat. 1.5 years and a switch to the new hub later, 2 smart power switches and one light broke down completely.
    Most fun though, that the hub casually forgets every connected device from time to time, with no power cut. This means the devices are still in the app, but you have to remove, reconnect, name and assign EVERY device. Most fun are the ones you need a screw driver for. Too expensive for single device use, but unsutible for real smart home applications, unless you have the time to reinstall the whole setup every 6 month or so and have no problem with gear breaking down within a year...

    The timing... I literally just got my first couple of Tradfri bulbs to try out today.
    Big bonus for potential buyers, the bulbs have the following power on state options:
    On
    Off
    Toggle
    Previous State
    By default they act like a normal bulb (on) to work with a regular wall switch, but you can set it to off or previous state for use with a smart switches.
    For anyone wondering how to get them into pairing mode for integration to Hoooome Asistant, do this:
    1) have sexy time (might as well before you get lost setting up automations)
    2) switch off the bulb in a live socket
    3) switch the bulb on/off 6 times about 0.5s intervals
    4) on the last on/off cycle, leave the bulb on
    After 5-10s it should start pulsing/breathing or some weird dimming thing it does..... That's it in pairing mode.
    The manual says to have the bulb 15ft away. It was a bit slower to pair (20s or so), so not sure if it could be done further.
    Note: You HAVE do each device one at a time otherwise they won't integrate properly.

    When I've got the Ikea stuff (around 2019) you could: pair the switch to the bulbs as you showed and then pair another switch or motion sensor to the first switch by Holding them together and press the button on the new device.
    Don't own any of it anymore, so can't check if it's still the case.

      i can still do so with remotes today however i dont have the motion sensor so cannot confirm that specifically. One possible snag would be the removal of proper zigbee BIND support from their firmware 1 or 2 versions ago. but definitely worth a try. (dont forget to wake up the switch first before trying to pair them together!)

I replaced them, had to reconnect them to my ST hub, and 3 days later they were out of battery again. Added more batteries and same thing. The bulbs still work great, but the buttons are now doing nothing in the garage.

    I’ve been using the ikea hub, remote, color and white bulbs, and smart outlet in their ecosystem for about 2-3 years now. Part of their selling strategy from the beginning to get people hooked in smart home stuff is to sell bulbs paired with the remote or “switch”, no hub needed. But I actually had no idea that the motion sensor had so many built-in features. I have passed one up in the As-Is section several times! But clearly I should try it.
    I’ve had bulbs fail, signal issues, and had to re-setup from scratch once. But once I have managed to troubleshoot each issue I had, I’ve found it to be an easy and reliable ecosystem for my current basic needs. I definitely have plans to start using Home Assistant here at my home (I’ve setup one at my parents’ place but it has very little connected and needs improvement), and something I learned on the Home Assistant and smart home subreddits is that because zigbee is less standardized as a signal than z-wave, not every brand of zigbee device will connect to one another properly in terms of building a zigbee network, but that IKEA and Aqara brand devices talk to one another well by using the same frequency(?) of zigbee. I’ve seen that since Aqara makes some of the most affordable and reliable devices (especially battery devices like door sensors, water leak sensors, etc) recommended by Home Assistant nerds, IKEA/Tradfri is often recommended as an alternative/option for powered devices like outlets and bulbs to get good zigbee signal coverage throughout a home or space. I think that between those two brands, someone running something like Home Assistant can really be spoiled for choice when they want to use zigbee to it’s best potential!

    • @paulhibbert
      @paulhibbert  2 роки тому

      My house has never needed zigbee to mesh because it's an 80's build and a modest size. It's an odd topic because even Philips stuff doesn't seem to properly mesh with Philips stuff! I tested it a while back and found it added no range!

    • @nate_river_
      @nate_river_ 2 роки тому

      I have a setup similar to the one you're planning and it works really well. I have Aqara sensors talking direct to HA, most IKEA stuff still through their hub, but HA driving it, and then a few switches direct on HA where I wanted to customise what happens for long presses and so on.
      Over time I was planning to move things out to HA altogether, but the hub is stable enough now that I'm not bothered; apart from a few pennies on energy consumption, It's pretty much invisible now. I think feeding it USB power off my Raspberry Pi 3b+ may have helped this.

    • @twobluestripes
      @twobluestripes 2 роки тому

      @@paulhibbert good to know! I think I’ve seen it recommended for situations like buying one or several battery-powered zigbee devices, but they are placed out of range the zigbee stick or whatever hub is supposed to control them, and not having any powered zigbee devices yet? People say just buy the cheap Tradfri phone charger thing and plug that in somewhere, or see if there’s a place for a bulb away from the zigbee stick to act as an extender. I’ve seen help posts where people have a lot of hue or something and don’t understand why certain other zigbee devices like Aqara don’t stay connected.
      I have a small 1970s built condo in California and the only signal problems I’ve had have been with wifi, due to my forced-air furnace blocking the path between the living room (the only place I can place my router thanks to the cable connection) and my bedroom. The IKEA is the only zigbee I have in use either here in the condo or in the other house with Home Assistant. I do wonder if water leak sensors, which need to be sitting under big metal appliances, might have more signal problems. Since I find both Aqara and IKEA to be the most affordable/accessible devices with zigbee, and have no plans to buy anything like Hue for over there, I guess I won’t be putting the idea that some brands don’t connect well with one another to the test anyway!

    While the textless mounting instructions show a picture of it clearly mounted in the garden (under roof), it may not be suited for outdoor use depending on your climate and outdoor conditions.
    According to the instruction manual, it is rated IP44 (which is better than I expected), but with the additional notes of
    "Do not subject the unit to wet or excessively dusty environments" and
    "The unit can be used in temperatures ranging from 0°C to 40°C" (freezing to high fever)

    Smart life ZigBee hub with the motion sensor? Been looking for an outside motion sensor

  •  2 роки тому

    I'm a newb when it comes to smart homes. But I have a motion sensor paired with a bulb in my hallway since about two years ago, with some cardboard to restrict what the sensor sees. So I can walk through without it reacting (hallway connects every room in this apartment so going to the toilet during the night blinded me before restricting its view). But if I move closer to the door, or come in from the outside, then it lights up and I can see what I'm doing without manually turning the lights on :)
    So I would say its a nice and affordable gateway into smart homes!

    How is the brightness particularly of the GU10 bulbs? I currently have dumb GU10s in all of the rooms in my holiday home and would like to convert that to a smart setup as cheaply as possible (I have 38 GU10 bulbs!). My one concern is that my current dumb bulbs are rated on the box as 400 lumens and I already wish they were a bit brighter whereas the IKEA fancy full-colour GU10s that I would like to use in at least a few rooms are rated at only 345 lumens. In your experience Paul is the lumen rating actually a good indication of brightness or does reality sometimes contradict the specs? I know you sometimes test with a light meter so I’m wondering if you’ve ever encountered situations where you’ve compared 2 bulbs that claim the same lumen output but in your testing you found one to be obviously brighter than the other perhaps because some manufacturers are much more conservative with their claims than others.
    I suppose what I should do is bring one of my dumb bulbs home with me, buy a single IKEA bulb and then compare the two at home but I would be interested in any insights that you or others might have.
