Thanks to electrification, we are in a new era of automotive records. Every day, powerful and torquey EVs redefine what it means to be fast, offering such quick acceleration that it would break the rules of any NHRA-sanctioned event.
But even with that in mind, there was no way I was ready for the outrageous thrust offered up by the newest record-breaker, the 2024 Lucid Air Sapphire. With a three-motor powertrain doling out up to 1,234 horsepower and 1,430 pound-feet, the Sapphire is the world’s most powerful production four-door sedan in history. It also vaults to 60 miles per hour in 1.89 seconds, a tenth quicker than the Tesla Model S Plaid, and will reach a manufacturer-claimed top speed of 205 mph.
There was no way to test that last number in my 25-minute first drive of the flagship Air, but rest assured, we launched the thing again and again. And then once more for good measure.

As a stockholder, I hope this car is enough to keep them "lucid" in their profitability.

Profitability is far far away. Tesla became profitable only in recent years. Lucid has just started but they will do good. Need more marketing, that’s for sure

Very cool that Motor1 got to drive one. Lucid has been slow to give journalists access to the car (or they're all under embargo). I'm dying to see this car put down some lap times. I have had the chance to really push my Air GT on some challenging roads and have been really impressed. The more powerful and more aggressively tuned Sapphire must be absolutely wild.

Startups take time. Building a global manufacturing and distribution network is expensive. Lucid is sitting on $6.5B liquidity and has wealthy backers to ensure it can build out its product line.

been seeing them around town. i think there might actually be a luxury tesla niche that they are fitting in to nicely. i expect their next earnings to slaughter expectations.

There's nothing in this car from a performance standpoint, let alone materials/build quality (see other YT videos about Lucid "issues") that justifies paying over $160k MORE than a Plaid. Worse, Tesla initially planned a Plaid+ and was correct in reading the market that it wasn't necessary. The problem is that Lucid is bleeding cash at an alarming rate, almost a billion last year. For those that say "yeah, will it took Tesla x years to become profitable too", right but that was when they were literally the only EV maker on the market. Lucid now has to find a way to make an affordable EV that much faster as a startup when Tesla just slashed prices on the two very vehicles Lucid will be competing against! Now add in VW, Audi, Porsche, Benz, BMW and even Hyundai/KIA. What exactly is the value proposition of owning a Lucid over all of the competition...esp. this at almost 3X the price?!

Already loaded up on shares. Lucid's sales suck now because no one has heard of them. What better way to grab attention than rolling this thing out next month (Sept '23)? They basically made a Chevy Malibu that's faster than a Bugatti. They are doing something right with that TECH. Tech that other big fish want a piece of, and will be looking to partner. I'm all in.

    • @MooseMeus

it's not going anywhere. the US government wants these companies to succeed. they want electric cars on the roads. not to mention this car has great appeal. i have seen them on the road in my small town. i agree a lot of these EV makers will NOT survive, but Rivian and Lucid are 100% going to make it. invest now, don't listen to "saudi" fud, w/e that is. we are allies with the saudi's anyway. them investing is a good thing. not to mention it's essentially a ex-tesla employee company, not a "saudi" company.
