Some may take exception to this but I have always felt the vinyl belongs in the jacket (it is there to protect the vinyl), inner sleeve opening facing up and outer clear sleeve facing up. Unless you’re a DJ easy access shouldn’t be an issue, the added steps to remove the record are just part of the ritual of vinyl record listening.

I’ve made adjustments that are based on the protective clear sleeve sliding partially off like Frank showed. You have a good point however as yes that’s the design and process of playing records. Yet it’s okay to see if we can improve as we go. But a point well taken. ☮️

The big exception for me is if I have old jackets that have seam splits/wear. I prefer to have the record outside because I don't want to damage it further.

It can be difficult to get the record in and out, though, and it can cause needless damage to the sleeve

I do it to protect against seam splits and ring wear. I stored my LPs in the jackets until I started noticing rings on the sleeves of records I bought just 5 years ago.

@@antstep1030 oh wow that's a bummer, I'm surprised. It might be due to the pressure of so many on the same shelf too. I thought plastic outer sleeves prevented that.

      Different vinyl listeners and collectors.
Listeners tend to not care about any of that other then “don’t scratch up”.
Collectors are so anal, the real anal ones do what this guy does. Over time it’ll get ring wear, even slightly. I’m a collector that is also a listener. I “collect” my favorite albums and I listen to them, I keep most on the outside in the paper sleeve so I don’t have to pull out the entire album and it’ll stop ring wear UNLESS you have a bunch packed together…then you’ll get ring wear not matter what. Hey ring wear happens. My brand new copy of the Amazon exclsucie Iron Maiden senjutsu has ring wear on the inner sleeve. It’s not terrible but it’s there and so what?! What am I really going to ever sell my record collection? N O NO

This is why I wish record covers would open from the top instead of the side. You would be able to use a sleeve, keep the records inside the jacket, and still see the artist/album on the spine when put on the shelf. It just makes so much more sense!

I’m kind if a traditionalist. Inner sleeve (Diskeeper 2.0 from Sleeve City) holds the record with the opening on the top and that plus any lyric sheets or custom lyric inner sleeves goes into the outer sleeve. Then the whole package slides into the outer sleeve with the opening on top to prevent the album from slipping out the side on the shelf as you showed. I don’t mind pulling out the jacket to get to the record and storing everything in the jacket protects the whole package, plus I can enjoy the back of the jacket since it’s not being covered by the record. I feel the front and back artwork needs to be enjoyed as a whole.

Good for convenience to take the vinyl out of the covers but it was a real pain when the sleeves would slip off while sliding them onto the shelves. I have the outer sleeves the same way for the same reason with the opening facing up however I keep any special inner sleeve (like with lyrics) inside the cover to protect it. The record goes in a plastic inner sleeve as you have but I turn opening on its side instead of leaving it facing up like the outer sleeve. Dust gets into the record inner sleeve if you leave the opening facing up.

  • @anotherfatbeardedmantalkin5893

Not for me, Frank. As far as I'm concerned the cover is to protect the record. A thin layer of plastic doesn't offer any protection. I get that the cover would get scuffed up over time through use, but I'm willing to have that rather than the record itself being damaged.
So, I just keep the record in its inner sleeve with the opening at the top, in its cover, in a plastic sleeve with the opening at the top.
It's all about protecting the record from dust and any damage.

I've always been a traditionalist when it comes to vinyl storage, having the album and sleeve in the dust jacket with the poly bag opening at the top. I always have enough room in each storage module to get my whole hand in. Packing too tight is never good a thing and having too big of a lean is also a potential warping issue. If you alphabetize it also helps to have spare space available for those inevitable new additions instead of constant shifting. It's good to see that there have been advances like gatefold and oversize poly bags to accommodate double and even triple albums, something that didn't exist when I was a kid just getting into vinyl. 👍

The major reason records are shipped outside the jacket, especially with used, is to prevent seam splits on the jacket, or keep them from getting worse during transit. As far as how you choose to store your records, that's entirely up to you, It's OK to shelve inside the jackets, and it's OK not to use an outer sleeve around the jacket. Just NEVER use PVC sleeves or album covers, they will destroy your records. The PVC modified to be transparent and flexible will migrate to the surface of the stable PVC LP surface and leave permanent splotches, streaks and "stains" that can not be cleaned away. The PVC sleeves can bubble, wrinkle and glue themself to the jacket. Sometimes a damaged record will play through, but that's rare. Suspect any used record in "plastic" sleeves. If there is a smell of "fruit" or petroleum (VOC's, or volatile organic compounds), then you most likely have PVC. Use only ARCHIVAL types of material. Responsible sellers of LP storage products will state, or respond to an inquiry, that their products are archival quality. I use a record cleaning system (not the same as cleaning for play, maybe once or twice a year deep clean) and replace the inner sleeve at every cleaning with archival paper or non PVC poly products labeled as archival. enjoy the vinyl life

I've never gotten over the personal need to keep the record itself inside the jacket. I'll usually keep lyric sheets and printed inner sleeves inside as well, but if that gives the jacket any stress, I remove those and keep them outside of the jacket. I've dedicated new outer sleeves just to interior items, particularly with multi-record sets.
This may drive some folks crazy, but I also place the record so that you can slide it right out of the jacket without having to move much of the inner protective sleeve. The outer sleeve always points up, so the record doesn't come out until the outer sleeve is removed. I love this because then I can just remove the outer sleeve and put the record on quickly. I also like being able to handle the jackets and read all the details on them. There's something about the tactile experience. I want to know what material they used to make the jackets, because that's sometimes part of the album experience.
    Great idea for a video.

  • @TheMrMoosy

I use Mylar for 80% of my records. When you go to slide a record into the shelf, the outer sleeve doesn't slide off. The sleeves (not cheap) are made of polyester and are more rigid than polypropylene/polyethylene. A little tight for gatefolds but I've never damaged any of my jackets. Mylar sleeves allow me to keep the opening on the side and therefore keep my records free of dust particles. Mylar also lets outer album artwork truly shine, it is actually stunning. I've had quality issues with the pricey gatefold sleeves that you discussed in your video and I can't stand the sealable or resealable products, I've had issues with those as well. I've recently tried the MOFI outer sleeves and love them, the value for money is hard to beat.

Have always sleeved my records behind the jacket. It protects the jacket from seam splitting ring wear, edge wear etc. If you have outer protective sleeves that aren't baggy and fit the sleeve properly you don't need to drop in vertically, its also better at creating a dust proof seal between the opening of the mofi or whatever archival inner sleeve from dust if you slide them in sideways. I invested in a large amount of protective sleeves and mofi inners quite some years ago and re sleeved my whole collection (2500 ish at the time) I now have a stock of them and everything that comes in gets cleaned, listened to and sleeved up then filed into the collection.

Those top quality sleeves will avoid paper decay issues that could harm the jacket and record. Unfortunately my own collection isn't as well maintained. The more you handle the sleeve the more wear you put on them.. That is what causes damage no matter how careful you are with them.. And if you store the album protective in the back sleeved you don't hurt the album when stored and you don't get ring wear on the album.. If you leave the album inside the cover and have too much pressure when you store them together you get ring wear.. Storing your records your way is fine if you just listen to your albums and you don't care what the sleeves look like.. But collectors store them the way the video says to protect the records and the sleeves.. Which in turn protects their value.. And you only get pressure damage if you store them too tightly together which you shouldn't do anyway

I typically put my record back in the sleeve with the outer protective sleeve pointed up. However if it is a 50’s or early 60’s (and some later) sleeve I will store with the record out as those early sleeves are tighter and more susceptible to seam splitting while trying to stuff a record with a latter day inner sleeve.

Then, as you’ve shown, I outer-sleeve the jacket upward so it is easier to put the whole item in a cubby or a storage box.
It also gives me peace of mind that the inner-sleeved record will not inadvertently slide out while handling the whole unit.

I sleeve all my records. And I like what Vinyl Storage Solutions have to offer. But the trouble is that they're not available on Amazon, and so shipping costs make them far too expensive. For example, a pack of 20 gatefold "one flap" sleeves cost $25, plus $12 shipping, and tax, for a total of $39.69, which is very expensive when you have a large record collection.

According to schoolboy science dust and dirt, the traditional scourge of vinyl records and the very substances we are using a vinyl cover as protection against, will fall vertically, straight into the upwards facing opening and into the pocket now formed by the plastic covering sleeve. Cold, hard fact. Just rotate the vinyl cover on the sleeve 180 degrees from the traditional position (or 90 degrees anti-clockwise from where you have it)and you have, in combination with the jacket spline, an almost hermetic seal that won't slide off when inserting records onto your shelf. Perfect. Granted. you have extra effort to remove the sleeve to access the record but that's cheaper than a gym membership

I would say get a record sleeve with round edges, put the vinyl inside the record and close it on top with an outer sleeve. the reason for that is that you basically seal the record inside. if the inner jacket is some art put it next to it.

Have been enjoying records since the 70’s and never used outer sleeves. I find storage or lack there of or mis-treatment is the biggest cause of wear and tear not lack of an outer sleeve.

Unless you wash your hands everytime you touch the sleeve you are getting oils and dirt from your hands that are wearing on your sleeves.. If you don't collect records and just listen to them or doesn't matter but having the least amount wear to the sleeve is part of the value of the record.. To keep the value you must protect the sleeve

it is better to have the inner-sleeve opening facing the side while the outer-sleeve faces up. This accomplishes two things: (1) eliminates any possible dust coming in from the top, and most importantly (2) eliminates the possibility you will stick you grubby fingers inside the inner-sleeve when trying to take the record out of the outer-sleeve. surprised more people do not do this (at least on YT)

I'm visually impaired these days and do good to read the front cover of the jacket, much less the spine, so that's not an issue for me. What is a huge issue is that so many jackets really don't get along with the inner sleeves that I use, from a variety of sources. You end up almost wadding it all into the sleeve and it make me cringe. That's why I made the change. The two LP's in one jacket, no gatefold, is more reason yet. With these the actual space inside is larger to accommodate 2 LP's, which means it easily handles one with the other in the outer sleeve. Thanks

Big Fudge inner anti-static sleeve for the vinyl which resides outside the back of the outer all in a 3mil Japanese resealable outer.
For those criticizing this method that it does not support the vinyl, it actually really does the same thing because there's another cover from another album right in front of it on my shelves. Literally the same amount of support for the vinyl...it saves the outer from unnecessary wear.
Also, dividers every 4-6 inches for support across the collection.

I use 12 5/8 clear plastic sleeves for single albums and small gatefolds. For double albums and larger gatefolds I use 12 15/16 plastic sleeves. I also remove the record from its original printed inner sleeve, place it in a new inner and store it between the cover and outer clear plastic sleeve. It’s nice when the vinyl record company prints a two sided lyric/information sheet and sends the vinyl in one of those rice paper/clear inners.

Frank, I put my LPs into upgraded inner sleeves if they don't come in them. These go back in the jacket. I want the jacket to provide protection to the LP. I put them in outer sleeves with the opening at the spine. This is the best way I found to keep dust out and not have any issues with the outer sleeve slipping as I insert into it’s shelf spot. All my albums are arranged in the order they are listed in my Discogs database.

I myself have tried this method and started to do it--since apparently everyone in the VC does it this way , but realize I dislike something. I like to peruse my records for fun and look at the jacket artwork, my best friend likes to go through my records and look at the jacket as we do our ritual of listening to records, drinking beer and discussing music. Anyhoo---I realized in this way it's cumbersome and blocks looking at the back cover. Which means I'd have to pull everything out of every record looked at; which can get annoying. Besides the one you're listening to, it's just easier to keep the records inside to peruse each album's jacket. However what I recently do is I do this method for all my newer most recent albums that'd I'd listen to more often to soak in; and once I know it well enough--inside the jacket it goes. (Plus, I've also noticed this method takes up more needless room.)

    • @BlondeReaganite
      @BlondeReaganite 2 роки тому

It may be easier for you to keep the record in the jacket sleeve but you are doing unnecessary damage to the jacket.. That is why collectors store their albums this way to protect the jackets.. If you have albums just to listen to and you don't care about the jackets then it doesn't matter how you store them.. But part of the value of a collection is the jacket and it's condition

Overall, I just think it looks bad and I have no use for it. I'm glad you're into it though!

I have always hated the way the outer sleeves came off when putting a record away. This solution is much neater. It also means less handling of the sleeve and no sliding records in and out. The only thing I miss is the track list on the rear cover. I know I have every track listed on my database as well as scans of front and rear covers but it isn’t quite the same . If I had an A3 scanner/printer then I could still have the rear cover on view.

I buy a 're-sealable' cover from Crystal Clear Bags Canada Inc. The Vinyl Solutions for gatefolds is interesting, or maybe cheaper to use 2 from crystal clear bags and fold the flaps. I never open my vinyl (newer ones anyways) so I dont worry about 'convenience access' I have not found a solution yet for Boxsets, currently I use a clear 24" garbage bag and cut it, tape it up. Since I never open it, it is not a concern. Have a good one man

I use crates to get that record store flipping feel when I’m looking for something to listen to and I see the art instead of spines on a shelf. Because of how I flip through them and how they have a little bit of a lean in the crates, I keep my records inside the static sleeves inside of the album jacket, to keep the record protected while flipping through them and to also keep the jackets from getting crushed. I just pull the outer sleeve off and put it back on sideways so I can slide the records out of the jacket. Those nice paper backed inner sleeves allow them to slide in and out pretty smoothly

Funny from the day I started using outer plastic sleeves on some stuff I never even thought of matching opening. Alway's put opening at top. I figured less dust could get inside the jacket too. I have quite q few RCA Living Stereo LP's that were my Gramp's that he got when he got RCA's first stereo console. Around 1958. They spent most of their lives in a paper sleeve in the jacket, no outer plastic and the ones that weren't played to death still sound like NEW.

  • @crunchyfrog555

I generally do this. I either use an outer sleeve where I can or need it, otherwise I just leave the shrink wrap, then bung the inner sleeve outside the cover but within the outer sleeve. And I've done this for years and it absolutely saves a few things. It keeps inadvertent scratches down (I also use a vaccum cleaner - an Okki Nokki) and it stop wear and tear on the sleeve.
Basically, I find it to be easy to access and easy to keep things pristine as you can and easily so.

If you're after easy, no hassle , no nonsense then listen to Spotify! I keep my records in the jacket, to me that's the traditional way! I honestly don't get the whole idea that it's so much quicker storing them at the back, playing records isn't supposed to be about speed it's a tactile experience. The jackets main job is to protect the record, it does a much better job of that with the record inside it. It seems maintaining the condition of the cover is far more important than looking after the vinyl these days. As unlikely as you may be to drop a record or drop some thing on a record, I'd much prefer it to have as much protection as possible from the very "device" that was designed to provide it.

My record collection dates back to the 1950s and I have always looked after my records the same way - as they came from the shop : in an inner sleeve which is kept in the outer sleeve : no need for these plastic over sleeves which usually jus stick to each other .
The opening in the inner sleeve should not align with the opening in the outer sleeve .
All of my records are in as good a condition as when I bought them .
Records should be stored vertically with light pressure form each side , and not allowed to slope to one side or the other .
I use a similar shelving system to the one in the video , and If I don't have enough records to pack a compartment , I normally use books or 10-1/2 inch tape reels to fill up the empty space , usually with a record box set at the end to ensure even pressure across the entire record ; I also have a few thin pieces of plywood cut to the same size for that purpose also .

I kind of do it this way too, though I started a while ago only to use gatefold outer sleeves, even for non-gatefold jackets and single record albums. Then the one "pocket" of the gatefold sleeve is used for the jacket, the other for the record and if there's lyrics on the original inner sleeve it goes there as well. Otherwise the original inner sleeve goes back into the jacket empty

I do it the traditional way. Yes, the sleeve CAN slide off, sometimes but, I usually prevent that by sliding out (just an inch or 3) several albums next to the one I'm looking for, partly so I know where it goes when I want to put it back in and partly because, if I put the one record back in, I'll see to it that all the others next to it get squared up to it and they all get pushed back in at the same time as if they are all one record and that stops at least 99% of the sleeve from coming back out. If it DOES come back out just a tiny bit, pull a couple next to it back out about 2", even them all up and push them all in at the same time. Holding them fairly tightly at the top and bottom corners at the same time as you push them in can help, too.
As for the single pocket double album cover, get a couple pieces of 12 x 12 chipboard (preferably acid-free) to put into the cover so you CAN'T crush it. Or, if you have access to those white or black dividers they use in record store shelves, trim those down to 12 x 12 and use them instead of the chipboard. Maybe even just an ordinary piece of corrugated cardboard would do the trick.

Only thing I do differenly is turn the record protector sleeve sideways so record will not spill out of the top. It requires another step to remove the record, maybe some dust protection also.
Also, no substitute for the Kallax. So versatile. I use the 4 x 4, 4 x 2, and 4 x1--you can stack on top to expand inventory when needed, too.

I then place my record into rice paper, put the record into a plain white record cover, then place the record into the back pocket of the Vinyl Storage Solution outer sleeve. This way I can clearly see the record cover without ever having to touch it again, while the record itself is doubly protected. I also use Sleeve City's Ultimate Inner Sleeve, which are easily the best rice paper sleeves on the market. None other comes close.
