  • This Boeing 707 departure was quite amazing. It` s always a pleasure to see these Boeing E3A Awacs planes in action at Geilenkirchen and I can` t bleieve we are able to see these Boeing 707` s with classic engines in 2024 at Geilenkirchen on a daily basis. There was some snow on the ground and an Antonov AN12 was expected. That combination was the reason why I decided to visit the airport last week. The An12 was delayed into the darkness but the other traffic was quite good. A B707 and a KC135 Tanker departed for some air to air refuel training.
By my surprise an Eurofighter suddenly showed up and performed a touch and go. I was just setting up my camera to set the focus for the KC135 which arrived 5 minutes later and suddenly I noticed something moving on my camera screen. I immediatly started recording and the Eurofighter Typhoon performed a great looking touch and go right in front of me.
I also waited for the An12 of Cavok Air which arrived from turkey and departed to Liege. Although it arrived after sunset I still think the video of the An12 looks kinda interesting. The atmosphere during blue hour after something is always something special and the sound of the classic propeller plane is amazing aswell.

How I miss this sound. This was the soundtrack of my teen years, when I lived near an airport with airliners taking off & landing every couple of minutes. There were many airliner models of course, but the 707 was king, and that is the sound I miss most.

I as well grew up near 3 airports in the metro DC area. I fondly remember going to spot with my binoculars and non digital aircraft radio and the aroma of burnt kerosene jet fuel! The good old days, late 60s/early 70s.

Love the shots of the AWACS & the KC-135s!! The Air National Guard unit at Little Rock AFB (189th) flew KC-135s for many years. My wife was a member of the unit and I was able to go up on a few refueling missions with them. That was an experience I will never forget!👍😄🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸

It's hard to believe that 50-60 years ago, Geilenkirchen was under the control of the Royal Air Force with our Lightnings, Meteors and Javelins. Still quite a base in the present day from what I can see.
As for the AN12... those are some fantastic moments, even in the darkness, the runway lights and late sunset give it a nice moody atmosphere. I used to get an AN12 over the house at least once a week going over the top of me on it's way into Birmingham, it's the only prop aircraft that has ever managed to wake me from a deep sleep! Not heard it for a while now, think that was a regular Cavok Air as well.
Awesome setup and great shooting. Thoroughly enjoyed that. I can see why you have 1.1 million subs! Keep up the great work!

The initial 707-120 first flew on December 20, 1957. Pan Am began regular 707 service on October 26, 1958.

That was an incursion into controlled airspace by that balloon wasn't it? Though I'm not sure what they could do about it, as they wouldn't have a radio. Just warn everything to keep an eye out, I suppose

yes, I agree. That` s why I am happy that die B707 Awacs planes still have the classic engines. They sound better in my opinion.

Why do the AWACs not have upgraded engines like the 135?

    • @ksbear2
      @ksbear2 4 місяці тому

The original engines had 10,000 lbs of thrust on both the AWAC and the KC135. The current Pratt and Whitney TF33-PW-100A turbofan engines on the AWACS have a current thrust of 20,500 lbs. The KC-135s were re-engined with CRM 56 engines that produce a thrust of 21,634 lbs each. So not that different in thrust - just looks different.

If the AWACS were refitted with larger engines, that would be too much weight on the plane, along with the spinning dome, for takeoff and landing/stopping the plane.
      Note:
The larger engines don't have thrust reversers, therefore the brakes have extra rotors to strengthen the brakes, without the thrust reversers.
If they added the thrust reverser doors, that would be too much weight on the wings.

    Hello!
I'm planning to create a new UA-cam channel with short films about aeroplanes. However, I don't have my own film material about aeroplanes. Therefore, I would like to use videos from another channel. I would like to ask you to give me permission to use your footage in my short films, but the clips will not be longer than 30 seconds.
I am already a subscriber to your channel,
as your videos are really cool! 👍
Thank you in advance for your short reply! 🙂
