Tim Keller's Four Points: 1) Faith gives you an inner ballast without which work could destroy you. 2) Faith gives you a concept of the dignity and worth of all work, even simple work, without which work could bore you. a) All work is good work (except for a few outliers, of course). b) The way to do work as a Christian is to do it well. 3) Faith gives you a moral compass without which work could corrupt you. 4) Faith gives you a world and life view that shapes the character of your work without which work could master and use you.
@terryturner3 Yes thank you again! And his Fifth Point there at the end: 5) Our Christian Faith gives us Hope, as illustrated beautifully in JRR Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle” short story, as an antidote against ineffectual work in this fallen world. “There is a tree…” (:
Thank you God for speaking to me through Pastor Tim Keller, the true meaning of work. I look forward to the way you would shape me into the worker who can wholely trust in you and join you in your work of restoration of the world. I may not produce as much good work as I expect, but even then, you will strengthen and guide me to see the hope you've shown us. In the name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
I think this is an area of teaching which is not normally preached in churches. I like the example he gave in the beginning and the four or five points. So, how to lead a Christian life in our workforce greatly depends on the nature of the work we are doing. Good explanation.
Wait a second Tim Keller... are you telling me I shouldn't feel like I'm wasting my life if I'm not going into a jungle of some sort as a missionary? ... my goodness why are you trying to take all my stress and anxiety away from me? Maybe I should just go back to listening to John Piper so i can get all that pressure, anxiety, and misery back since that's all I could get from Piper and his pressuring lectures... ... but on a serious note... thanks for the freedom and truth you speak through the Lutheran understanding of vocation and the proper distinction between Law and Gospel, love you truly Tim! :)
+George Vassi I dont think this kind of biting criticism, even if I thought it were fair, is ok for such a public forum. Please take care with your words when speaking about those who have devoted their life to the Lord.
+David Underwood What? Did you even watch the video? The whole point is that though missions and such are good, all of us can devote our lives to God by doing our work well despite what it is.
+Austin Harris Austin I don't think you understood George's comment correctly. He agrees with Tim in every way, but he disagrees with methods such as John Piper's which creates a sense of guilt and meaninglessness in life unless you do what John piper tells you is christian/religious enough to be considered worthy enough for your activities and work to have true "meaning" or "godliness". John Piper is a highly manipulative teacher as he constantly attempts to take away a sense of purpose unless you do the activies he considers meaningful, simply watch his sermon "Don't waste your life" ... where he condemns those who collect sea shells, as though they have lose all meaning and purpose... so sad people dont understand the damage these teachers cause.
Jesus is waiting for you to come to Him, He won't cast you away from Himself if you come to Him. He calls us all to repentance, He loves us and wants to save us. believe and have faith in God then the Holy Spirit will come in and lead you to repent of your sins and God will forgive you of your sins and cleanse you by the blood of Jesus and you'll get born again by His Holy Spirit and have His salvation, you will become a new creation (John 3:3-19). God bless
So basically have a good attitude while the capitalist has his boot on your neck, and while a few men own the earth and it’s property to the exclusion of the majority? Sounds like this theology keeps the status quo, and the rich very happy. After all, the truck driver, and the broom pushers are the fingers of God that feed and pamper the ones who do so little on their own: the rich…of whom are the head if not the fingers? God told man to keep and dress the earth…all man. Not just a few.

What is the first point? Faith gives you inner balance?
Inner ballast, I think.

I couldn't find the names of any books by "William Deal", a former exec of Bethlehem Steel.
Can anyone help?
You should look up: William E. Diehl

Radical political nonsense.
