If Aegon himself is a patron of the child fighting pits, even so far as abandoning his own children there, why would Mysaria actually think that putting him in the throne would make the issue better?
one thing that gets me about the "do you love me? - You imbecile" scene is that it gets answered when Alicent puts herself between her son and a fucking dragon ......
I love Meyles' design, she's so spikey around the head, and it really evokes a "crown" look, a great tribute to her Red Queen title. Bonus, she also has a wacky head silhouette just like Rhaenys, aww
Another thing that cannot be ignored in the Rhaenys scene is that breaking through the floor would get her skull crushed by one of the falling rocks so it would have been suicidal for her to do it in the first place.
@@HOTD108_ yes and Rhaenys is on top of that dragon, which means one of the falling rocks would hit her in the head, this little strange concept called gravity. Meleys might be able to take it (though you'd think the walls of a place designed to keep dragons would be harder for one of them to break through) but I don't think Rhaenys' skull can.

The whole Aegon quest storyline was confusing. I think we're suppose to assume that the person who finds Aegon first can manipulate him more easily, but it was never really explained.
Yes, that’s why the race to find him is happening. The one who finds him first gets to decide via their influence how Rhaenyra’s family is handled, that’s why Alicent is so worried about Otto finding him before she can. If Otto gets him, he’ll tell Aegon to give the order for all the Blacks to be murdered and Alicent doesn’t want that and she knows Vicerys wouldn’t either.
my problem with the girlboss moment™is that murdering a ton of innocent people is like, horrific, but the show portrays it as badass. and im pretty sure the writers room wasn't doing a meta "lets explore the callousness of the targs to the smallfolk by not exploring the consequences of this and also never mentioning it again", i think they genuinely wanted a shocking™ badass moment in episode 9 because they felt it was expected, and they really thought that's what this was.
It's what killed a lot of GoT since they went so often with "spectacle" without thinking about the repercussions. I still have a lot of faith in the show to either re-integrate this moment into the series or just have it be there as a misstep once, because in the rest of the season, they were really cautious and so on about this (and maybe this was a studio mandate, which just kills writer input) I'll make my judgment how much this was a foreshadowing of a downfall or a bad decision (again, possibly fuelled by studio mandate) because honestly, the rest of the season really just was great imo.@@youngveteran6368
@@Daviesng007Right, as much as i dislike the addition, it has to be foreshadowing, at least in part. Someone in season 3 or 4 will probably remark how they lost a family member or two on that day. The attack of the dragon pit is one of the main plot points near the end of the show.
My main issue with Rhaenys' departure (aside from what you pointed out) was that she has every reason to roast that stage right there as this scene is. If Rhaenyra falls Rhaenys' grandaughters are going down with her. The Greens would not let Daemon's daughters go freely. Obviously she can't bbq the stage because the story needs everyone there alive so there needs to be a reason why doing this would be folly. Like say, Aegon isn't there. He's outside on Sunfyre doing the donuts in the parking lot. That way whats the point of blasting them if their king isn't even there. killing Alicent would only make things worse in fact because Rhaenys believes her to be a rational person in Aegon's ear. Sparing Alicent for this reason would be a better motivation for Rhaenys to spare her than "oh wow shes a mom just like me she fr loves her kids so relatable anyway i gotta go". She can leave out the door, buzz past Aegon, and scene ends same way. Sparing Alicent for tactical reasons like protecting her granddaughters is also much more in character for her than empathizing with Alicent's love for her children.
The one justification would be that by that point the Dance is jut diplomacy, intimidation and attempt of outmaneuvering each other without an open war? But at the same time the show doesn't seem to really bring up that aspect or even make the descent into mass murder, kinslaying and kingslaying into an actual descent. Every old man with power and with desire for more power just seems to be absolutely instantly ready to commit the worst crimes of their faith and culture. Only really Rhaenyra, Alicent and the younger generation have any sort of restraint, and even then arguably, which creates this weird narrative where we are probably supposed to take Alicent thinking Viseyris wanted Aegon on the throne, Rhaenys unwilling to torch the stage and Aemond actually not wanting to kill Luke, just intimidate him, as a sort of show how this war, even if started over selfish reasons, even with actual justifications, wasn't meant to descend into what it did in the minds of those that started it, but then it did and it unleashed horror upon the land. But at the same time, yet again, due to how much over the top the show made many things, everyone already seems ready to indulge in a lot of murder early on.
I kept thinking if they wanted an intense moment, and to show maybe how agile Meleys is, they could have kept the Sunfyre flight around and Rhaenys trying to escape, and Sunfyre giving chase, and we get a cool dragon flight scene. Or a scene where Meleys lands when perhaps they leave the coronation. Or they give chase as she leaves the pit the normal way. It just... wasn't necessary this way
If you as the writer can’t or are unwilling to have her kill the Greens for the plot, then don’t put her in a situation where she has them dead to rights with very little incentive not to kill them after having shown she’s willing to kill hundreds of innocent bystanders.
The biggest problem to me about the scene with Alicent and Larys is that Queens do have power and Alicent has been shown to exercise authority. The writers of the show took a deeply pious woman who had power and treated her like a tool. How did Larys even propose that he be allowed to masturbate in her presence without immediately being arrested? The show wants us to believe that Alicent (who according to this episode didn’t even have political ambitions to advance until she misunderstands Viserys) values a network of information we’ve only seen used once for something Alicent didn’t want over her deeply held morals and faith and it just doesn’t make sense to me.
This episode is usually written off as the worst of the season (which isn’t unfair), but it contains one of my favorite scenes of the series. The conversation between Rhaenys and Allicent is perfect in every way and it’s just such a great showcase for both characters and both actors. My mom has been asking me to make a video with her discussing it, as it’s her favorite scene as well lol. Glad you sang its praises and I loved your analysis! Girlboss revolution!
I think it's a fair thing to complain about. It's pretty lazy foreshadowing to just have a character say what's going to happen for no other reason than to signal to the audience. Not to mention it removes agency from characters by having events seem less like the result of personal actions and more the result of determined destiny. It's just really lame.
@@HOTD108_ I disagree with Haelaena predictions being a signal of fate. Her visions are simply that, visions of a future built by the actions of everyone around her. Just think of Maegi the Frog, who was able to tell Cersei's future, and we get to see how it wasn't some ill fate, something that was predetermined for her no matter what she did, but her own actions what caused the future Maegi saw. But with your first statement I agree, it's a bit repetitive and obvious to use Haelaena to tell us what's going to happen just so we can say "OH I GET IT NOW, THAT'S WHAT SHE MEANT".
Imo, you expressed well that the problem isn't her being a vessel of prophecy as a storytelling device, it only becomes problematic if she 1. Only fulfills that position, which with her being super ASS-coded, is just insulting 2. If it's a lazy plot device to signal out the future for people to know what will happen. I didn't read the book this is based on, but I hope she'll either fade from relevance as a dreamer who had some dreams or not just be used as a lazy foreshadowing device, cuz in s1, imo it's acceptable to a degree, but the overuse is what makes it ok or not.@@MarianFK
Immediately after rewatching this season, I rewatched the entirety of Netflix’s “The Last Kingdom”, just to see Aemond playing Osferth again. It’s reassuring to see him being a gentle and genuinely good person once more, and the additional fact that in that show, HE’S the bastard- is just a lot of fun. Thanks for this Blisstake, Glaegon The Glonqueror, and special thanks for your version of Ave Ma-bee-ya❤️
Also the actress who plays Heleana is Aethelflaed's daughter Aelfwynn. So his sister in one show is his niece in another. Just to add to the confusion.
If only Ser Crispy and Aegon had been the ones in love with each other.. Aegon would've been totally down for running away with Crispy to The Free Cities to do a bit of loving. 😢😢
The thing is, I think the point was they didn't expect the change in Aegon that came from the crowd cheering. Otto and Alicent didn't expect him to suddenly WANT to be king and were more or less planning a virtual house arrest where only their loyalists ever had direct access and they would be the real power. That's what the race was about.
17:30 I like how the piano in this part sounds like it's asking a question and the "answer" is one low, sad note of affirmation. Viserys is dead. There are so many things up in the air now and the answers to all of the anxious questions are not good

I really don’t know why the show bothered building up Criston’s resentment for Rhaenyra if it wasn’t going to lead into to his decision to become The Kingmaker. Like, in episode three, he tells Rhaenyra that people won’t have a choice but to accept her as queen which I thought was foreshadowing of how it was his choice to seat Aegon on the Iron Throne in place of her… but no. No speech to the council, no convincing Aegon, even his conscious decision to murder Lord Beesbury when he stands up for Rhaenyra’s claim is replaced with ambiguous manslaughter which isn’t anywhere near as satisfying as a character moment. In this context, I don’t know why he crowned Aegon since he did nothing to secure his reign. It just makes him a wet fart of a character who has no real role or purpose in this story as this was THE moment where he actually changed things on his own. (The coronation itself was also woefully underwhelming. Nevermind that they rushed it so much, Aegon was only blessed by four out of seven gods, but they removed one of my favourite moments when Alicent places a crown on Halena’s head and calls her “my Queen.” The bit I did like was Aegon unsheathing Blackfyre but that does NOT make up for it.) Now I don’t know why he’s there. He’s just gonna hang around until he dies because his purpose in the story was finished in episode five as he doesn’t serve any greater function than being the catalyst that destroyed the relationship between Rhaenyra and Alicent but now that’s over… why is he still here? And more than that, the show has set up the perfect moment for him to step in. Alicent was doubtful and unsure of whether she should help crown Aegon in place of Rhaenyra, Otto is arguing with her but then Criston steps in and convinces her using the arguments from the book bolstered by the resentment built up from the show, and when Beesbury continues to object, Criston slits his throat and the council concludes that they have no choice. Likewise, with Aegon unwilling to take the throne, Criston could have been the one to convince him in a way that no one else was capable of making him understand. The more I think about it, the angrier I get as it robbed Criston of his central narrative purpose and didn’t deliver anything meaningful in its absence.
With all of that being said, while I had some issues with how drawn out the hunt for Aegon seemed to be, I have to say that I really did appreciate what it accomplished in a narrative sense as it showed his character and his relationships to everyone around him without showing us Aegon himself. First of all, no one knows where he is, so we can immediately see that until this point he was something of a secondary thought as people aren’t exactly keeping a close enough eye on the future king. But even after that, few people know where to even begin looking and it’s only because Erryk is his sworn shield that he knows Aegon’s personality and Aemond is forced to know him as his brother but neither of them enjoy this, as they resent Aegon as a person. Likewise, his perverted activities show not only a vain narcissist but also a brutal sadist who enjoys watching pain in the fighting pit, with a doubly dark dimension that Aegon might be watching his own bastard children fight to the death for his amusement. And even after all of that, all Aegon wants to do is literally run away from his responsibilities, to forsake the crown and run away to do literally anything else. We saw from the last episode that he’s clearly a monster but is he irredeemable? We can see that he doesn’t lust for power like Joffrey, he doesn’t crave the ability to make people hurt and he doesn’t get reinforcement from his family in his urges, just the opposite in fact which might be the cause of his urges in the first place that all he wants is love and respect but no one gives it to him which just makes his tendencies even worse. So that all leads up to the moment of his coronation where he unsheathes Blackfyre, to the cheers and adulation of the crowd and for the first time in his life, he finally found a purpose and place where people would accept him and love him. This was the first time Aegon felt like he had support and whereas Rhaenyra gets her validation from her family and doesn’t need the crown, Aegon gets validation from the crown and doesn’t need his family. I felt this added so many layers and dimensions to his character that could be explored, even though I know he’ll just end up being a diet, store brand version of Joffrey. I would love it if Aegon wanted to be a kind of populist ruler who did what he thought the people would want him to do as they’re the ones who gave him love and respect, not his family. It would be an interesting contrast to Rhaenyra who is kind and gentle to people in her immediate circle but is regarded as Maegor with teats by the people while Aegon is a POS to people in his life but is loved by the smallfolk.
While you DO have a solid point. You have to remember that Fire and Blood is an in Universe story. So Criston Cole, could VERY well be a scapegoat. And people exagerated his crowning of Aegon. And this show has actually constructed Criston as a brute with little intelligence.
@@facundogonza5740OTD uses so much from Mushroom’s testimony for the Greens that it gets kind of annoying tho; why not let some of what the others in Fire and Blood be true. There is no reason to call Criston the Kingmaker now.
I suspect Criston's role will be to make Aegon a better king or more fit for a war by training him and maybe guiding him. Maybe he leans on Criston more than others. Bit of a stretch but still could make him, in a way, a Kingmaker. Plus, in a sense, he was the one to find him so thanks to this he got crowned. Rest may be "gossip"
The Child Fighting pits were probably a nod to something GRRM said was how Rorge and Biter came about, with Rorge in charge of one of these fighting pits, raising the young abandoned Biter as one of the fighters.
Same! I don't always agree with her takes, but she usually brings a perspective on the show that I don't see from other UA-camrs and I appreciate it. It's nice to see her getting recognition from one of the heavy hitter Thrones channels.
OH! So I just figured out the race for Aegon. Alicent demonstrated to her father that she had the power and connections to do it. So it ultimately wasn’t about the Aeg-uffin, just that Alicent has a team capable of capturing the flag, proving to Otto that she isn’t a pawn. Which is why he listens to her about the Rhaenyra thing.
I can’t lie but k-bag Cole gently pushing old man bees head into a table then pulling his sickest anime edge-lord pose behind his corpse is definitely one of the moments in season 1 episode 9 of hbo’s house of the dragon
The lord commanders resognation struck me as a sort of Ned Stark x "one guy with a sword in a room of politicians moment". He absolutely had the power to stifle dissent in the room and serve his oldking/new queen, but his honour to his path forbids him from acting as queen maker while the dishonourable Ser Cole abuses his position to further greens' agenda.
The last scene could've played out very different if only they showed Helaena and Aegon riding through the city after the coronation anf them looking uyo to see Rhaenys fly out of the DragonPit.

Thank you Glimbo. I watched this episodes ages ago and held no opinion on the dragon killing thousands scene past: "well she never seemed to care about the common folk anyway so it makes sense, and maybe she didn't want to risk being stopped". Now after watching your video I'm aware of its potential flaws, and thus the potential flaws of the writing staff in general, so my enjoyment of the show has been permanently hampered and I will never go into a new episode not wary off these kinds of missteps. Now I can finally be the perpetually annoyed ASOIAF nerd I was for so many years with Game of Thrones.
Other than wanting a girl boss moment the only reason i can see for Rhaenys not going out the other exit for the dragon pit could be the other, potentially hostile dragons that might be in her way. But it could've shown that so maybe they just wanted it to look cool.
the thing i hate most about the scene is that they could've done one of a few minor things to clarify the situation and have the set piece make complete sense. but they didn't. that's what has me most worried.
If you haven't watched The Last Kingdom (I'm addressing this to everyone including Gilgamesh) I seriously recommend it. You get to see Ewan Mitchell's great range (Osferth is a total cinnamon roll) but it's extra fun seeing him playing a character who's King Alfred's bastard son given Aemond's hang ups. Also, the actress who plays Heleana plays his niece Aelfwynn which adds to the tripiness. Finally, if you can keep track of all the wacky Saxon names (there are 5-6 distinct characters named Uhtred son of Uhtred) the Valyrian names on HOTD will be a cakewalk.
IMO Episode 9 has great individual scenes and dialogue, but it doesn't come together in a satisfying way. And squeezing the Green Council scene into A FEW MINUTES pissed me off more than the Rhaenys scene for some reason
I burst out laughing at "literally the only good thing about this episode" because that's exactly how I feel. I love the music that plays in the scene before Arya yeets the Night King.
I think if nothing else, allowing the commander of the Kingsguard to leave of his own volition probably postpones a lot of bloodshed of men they could still, hypothetically, turn to their cause. They anticipated a split in the Kingsguard as a part of their grab for power; I just don’t think they anticipated him taking one of the twins with him, too, which creates a major surveillance/security blind spot for both factions. Also, “they look for him in the last place anyone would expect to find [Aegon], a church” made me bust out laughing because omg so true. Big brain move by Mysaria, for what it’s worth.
glibby i fucking love your analysis, especially when you get excited about musical motifs and shit. i always enjoy the music but when someone who knows what they're talking about lays out the patterns of why this would have subconsciously clicked for me, my enjoyment skyrockets. it's stuff like that that will make rewatching the first season an even better experience. much love

I love Meyles' design, she's so spikey around the head, and it really evokes a "crown" look, a great tribute to her Red Queen title. Bonus, she also has a wacky head silhouette just like Rhaenys, aww
I wonder how much padding Rhaenys has in her wig. Wait, maybe that's what protected her from falling debris when she broke the floor.
It's as if the seven themselves have blessed this day
Seconded
Rhllor save your souls
Another thing that cannot be ignored in the Rhaenys scene is that breaking through the floor would get her skull crushed by one of the falling rocks so it would have been suicidal for her to do it in the first place.
Not to mention contradicts how dream fire dies like the whole scene didn't make any since .
The dragon busted through the floor though, not Rhaenys. It's hard to see, but if you go frame by frame you can see Rhaenys has a massive dragon.
@@HOTD108_ yes and Rhaenys is on top of that dragon, which means one of the falling rocks would hit her in the head, this little strange concept called gravity.
It really reminded me of the “SVETLANA!” scene from Death of Stalin
"that's not blood oozing out of his skull it's strawberry jam (he was a special bee)" got me good. honestly just the best thing.
As a person who doesnt understand music at all, I really love when you explain all the music stuff. Best part of the blisstake imo!
my problem with the girlboss moment™is that murdering a ton of innocent people is like, horrific, but the show portrays it as badass. and im pretty sure the writers room wasn't doing a meta "lets explore the callousness of the targs to the smallfolk by not exploring the consequences of this and also never mentioning it again", i think they genuinely wanted a shocking™ badass moment in episode 9 because they felt it was expected, and they really thought that's what this was.
They traded logic for spectacle. I hope this type of thinking dies with S1 but I have a feeling I’m wrong
It is actually a good addition to what is missing from the books though, and it will come up again.
It's what killed a lot of GoT since they went so often with "spectacle" without thinking about the repercussions.
I still have a lot of faith in the show to either re-integrate this moment into the series or just have it be there as a misstep once, because in the rest of the season, they were really cautious and so on about this (and maybe this was a studio mandate, which just kills writer input)
I'll make my judgment how much this was a foreshadowing of a downfall or a bad decision (again, possibly fuelled by studio mandate) because honestly, the rest of the season really just was great imo.@@youngveteran6368
@@Daviesng007Right, as much as i dislike the addition, it has to be foreshadowing, at least in part. Someone in season 3 or 4 will probably remark how they lost a family member or two on that day. The attack of the dragon pit is one of the main plot points near the end of the show.
@@youngveteran6368 I, for one, enjoy spectacle over logic. It was so fucking BASED to come up from beneath the ground like that.
I like the way Alt Shift pops in, like he's just hanging out in the corner listening

Blisstake episode 10 will come out at the same time as Winds of Winter and Silksong
Are you stupid?
This episode is usually written off as the worst of the season (which isn’t unfair), but it contains one of my favorite scenes of the series. The conversation between Rhaenys and Allicent is perfect in every way and it’s just such a great showcase for both characters and both actors. My mom has been asking me to make a video with her discussing it, as it’s her favorite scene as well lol. Glad you sang its praises and I loved your analysis! Girlboss revolution!
The editing in this video is giving Year 8 geography class PowerPoint project and I am living for it. Needs more star wipes though.
Helena’s dialogue is just a vessel of foreshadowing and I’m not complaining.
She’s basically Cassandra
Imo, you expressed well that the problem isn't her being a vessel of prophecy as a storytelling device, it only becomes problematic if she
1. Only fulfills that position, which with her being super ASS-coded, is just insulting
Also I appreciate you censoring "fr*nch" - you get it.
Nevermind that they rushed it so much, Aegon was only blessed by four out of seven gods, but they removed one of my favourite moments when Alicent places a crown on Halena’s head and calls her “my Queen.” The bit I did like was Aegon unsheathing Blackfyre but that does NOT make up for it.)
Now I don’t know why he’s there.
Well said. Great comment.

Can’t wait to see how Aemond’s voice actor translates and performs “Oh, shit.”
LORD GLIMBUS HAS RETURNED
I can’t lie but k-bag Cole gently pushing old man bees head into a table then pulling his sickest anime edge-lord pose behind his corpse is definitely one of the moments in season 1 episode 9 of hbo’s house of the dragon
I don't know why, but "Aegon is canonically ticklish" made me bust out laughing. You are truly a brilliant satirist/analyst.
Who has it worse, Alicent being essentially sold into marital slavery or the journalist who had to cover every joust for 8 YEARS?
The lord commanders resognation struck me as a sort of Ned Stark x "one guy with a sword in a room of politicians moment". He absolutely had the power to stifle dissent in the room and serve his oldking/new queen, but his honour to his path forbids him from acting as queen maker while the dishonourable Ser Cole abuses his position to further greens' agenda.

ACAPELLAS NEVER DISSAPOINT time to rerun it a hundred times
The fact that I actually am watching this for the first time on Christmas made that Ser Criston joke so much better lol
IMO Episode 9 has great individual scenes and dialogue, but it doesn't come together in a satisfying way. And squeezing the Green Council scene into A FEW MINUTES pissed me off more than the Rhaenys scene for some reason
HONESTLY the council scene is worse than the coronation scene 😨
@@Glidus Except Ironrod seductively whispering the words "Darkling Schemes", that sent shivers down my spine 😳
All that last scene needed to be good was the green dragons to make an appearance, forcing Rhaenys to run; so close and yet so far
Indeed, no idea why they didn't (maaaybe budget?). A dragon stand-off would be the exact epic moment they were gunning for.
