You might be surprised by the dark themes in One Piece, its a combination of really serious themes but can become goofy/funny/unserious at any moment but Oda does it well. The writing actually goes really deep Oda is very well read and one of the things than makes One Piece so great is how almost every arc retains relevancy in some form or another even 1000 chapters later

Completely agree with this. Too many people I feel try to rush into catching up and I get not wanting to miss out on the final saga/biggest reveals. However, it seems like a good portion of people I’ve seen do that tend to get a little fatigued. Nothing wrong with going at your own pace and takings breaks especially since there are definitely parts of the story where the pacing is much slower. Glad we finally got Ryan on board though.

@@ginoandreano2452 The rule is, based on everyone I know that has started OP recently, as soon as you catch up you regret it. So not catching up does sound good. But at the same time, while waiting sucks, the experience, the theorycrafting, it's way much more enjoyable once you are caught up, as you can discuss it and research it. As for the reading experience itself, for some arcs binging is way better (like the one with the pink guys in the pink land), for others reading them weekly makes them way more enjoyable (like the one that only lasted 6 chapters just after eating cake). And then there's some things that you can only experience as a weekly reader, like not realizing right away that the cute Australian girl was the same from that flashback 3 years ago, and getting to like the new version of the character before making that connection, because at no point Oda tells you "it's the same person" even though he drops several hints about it

The more you read the chapters, the more you will understand why this particular manga/anime is that famous. It has ofc its own flaws, but I think and I hope you will not regret reading it. I thought about this a lot..
So follow me, i hope it makes sense:
Its literally like rubber and the density of it changes depending on how much strengh he puts in his muscles. Combining that with the motion of a punch(gum gum pistol) and it would be like: throw your fist back with loose biceps/triceps and it would fly equal to a loose thin rubberband with a rock on it. Then cramp the muscle to make the rubber equal to thick industry rubberband= brutal force

@@nicolaischramm3876 not too far off, but he's not necessarily changing the density of his arm/ body. it's more like he's decreasing the amount of tension in his arm by relaxing his muscles and then increasing the amount of tension force he applies when it's extended enough in order to increase the force of impact

Only about half way through the video so far. Sanji's introduction is the first "good" arc and the next arc is what most regard as the main hook to the series. Looking forward to hearing more, assuming this series will continue
Also, might I suggest just doing blind arc reviews instead of x amount of volumes? Many channels have gotten really good views on those(TotallyNotMark, DanielGreen, Merphy, etc) and I know you talk about UA-cam views not doing great right now. One Piece is adventure for sure, it's candy coated horror and trauma as well. But being adventure, when a fight comes up, we ask 'why' do we fight, not 'how' do we win. That's what matters.
Fights are just a vehicle to move the plot along. They aren't the point. Lastly, yea the story hasn't really started yet. The first 100 chapters is basically the prologue.

About the "how much did Oda have planned from the beginning?" question:
He has had the broad strokes planned from the beginning. The end specifically was one thing in his mind when he started, and is still the same thing in his mind (and is supposedly in a safe somewhere in case something happens to Oda before he can finish the series, though no idea if that's true).
The story that was originally planned to be 5 years has just massively expanded _in the middle,_ with Oda adding characters and storylines that slowly lead towards that eventual conclusion.

Glad to hear it. Hope it jives with you. It’s def a slower start but things do ramp up and once the world gets big enough you enjoy how different characters are reacting to world events.
For the first half of one piece, I would just try to enjoy it for what it is. Especially enjoy the adventure . These are the “golden age” times of the manga.

One piece is definitely something that try’s to be both a healthy blend of wacky and depressingly real. I never would’ve suspected the themes of the series that would develop, and it’s genuinely a roller coaster of emotions from even the most unlikely of characters. Everything feels like it wraps together flawlessly to the point it feels like a genuine world with its own politics, cultures, and societies. It’s one of if not the best pieces of writing I’ve ever experienced.

Glad you finally started it lol, I knew the day would one day come. You should review it by Arcs or by Sagas. That's how people usually review the One Piece manga as it helps thematically as well as with discoverability on UA-cam as people tend to search for Arc reviews. If you go by Arcs, the earlier ones in the story tend to be on the shorter side (by One Piece standards) but later on arcs can be anywhere from 15 chapters to 150 and so they have good talking material as well as a concluded storyline. Regardless of how you want to progress, have fun reading it.

Thank you for taking the dive into OP, I think you're in for the telling of a great story! The great thing about OP is the depth of the story as it goes on - it does have dark themes and moments of goofiness but overall the characters are the ones you'll fall in love with. Not just the main cast but many of the side characters and even the villains. I would definitely love to see you continue to review it!

15:50 Losing the ability to swim is shared between all of the devil fruits, but it’s a bit more than that. It’s more like a generic susceptibility to water. You sink like a rock and it weakens you to the point of uselessness.
The fruits are also borderline mythical at the point you’re at now, but we end up going places which have higher concentrations of devil fruit eaters who make them feel much more commonplace than they are in most of the world.
20:30 “is it bad that I want to ship Zoro with Nami?”
Yes lol. There are no romantic relationships among the crew. They’re all more like siblings than significant others.
24:45 “Can you tone it down just a little bit on the character designs?”
Get ready for the exact opposite lmao. This series is as much a comedy as it is an action drama.

As soon as you said you like stories that explore darker themes and the indomitable will of the human spirit I became invested in your journey of OP 😂 sure it may not be overall as dark as some series, but I think the best way to describe it isn't that it's about adventure, but it is a series about the indomitable will of the human spirit through medium of an adventure. One Piece is one of this uncommon series where the author plants some plot seeds the reader ignores but, a lot later, it's revealed as a critical plot matter. The reader thinks he/she knows the characters, but their story is going to be revealed little by little. At same time, all the characters evolve, physical and emotionally. Be patient, Ryan. It's not Berserk and it doesn't pretend to be it, but beneath the fun and the light story, there is a much more deep plot and themes in this crazy world with crazy people.

Too bad Oda recently just forces in major things in the story without any leadup. Those black-winged angel dudes and the whole Sun God Nika thing had no foreshadowing or loose ends whatsoever (Skypiea has nothing to do with Gear 5).
It feels like he understands the story is ending and forces in some WTF moments before the actual major reveals (IMU, Thé One Piece, Raftel, Luffy's dream,...) because the fans eat them up like candy.

You could read until the end of of Arlong Park (vol. 11) for the next video and then continue arc for arc or saga for saga. After Arlong Park you will have a decent taste of what the themes and the emotional range of One Piece are going to develop into. That's why people always recommend to at least finish the first 11 volumes.

  • @grennbalze

Just sayin'. One Piece gets REAL dark the farther you go. It doesnt show anything too graphic, but it insinuates a lot that is terrible, and in some cases shows some pretty awful atrocities. Like...its hard to get much worse than the material it covers. Amazingly One Piece balances its goofy nature, with outlandish comedy, and interweaves amazing drama and heartache. This of course fits the theme of not letting your past define you, and as long as you are following or working towards your dream, you are living your best life
