When you say “just a cowboy hat", do you mean just a cowboy hat while riding a bull?
Damn he was wearing just a cowboy hat? That poor bull
JB is the man and will be hard to top!
My grandpa was a cowboy/rancher in the southwest desert. He rode bulls for 28 yrs
. He rode his last bull at the age of 52. We were at a radeo watching bull riding and none of the young cowboys could sit for 8s. He came from the crowd and was on that bull for 10 seconds, then flipped the bull off. 😂 the announcers said, "we respect you coming in here with a baseball cap on, but don't disrespect our bulls." They didn't know him personally, but he earned that.
😂😂😂😂
My family raised horses growing up and brother and i would often end up in the saddle of a bucking horse. Never even heard of helmet back then idk how many times we ended up face first in dirt or shit or flat on our backs and we dust our selves off and get back in the saddle sometimes took longer then other though lol. One year we went to a parade and the 4h kids were riding the parade with thier fancy bedazzled saddle and helmets with cowboy hats on top me and my brother never laughed so hard at someone on a horse.
We rode without vests too but the hat makes you feel like a true cowboy
In Mexico they don't wear a helmet and just got of work laying brick and on half a pint by lunch. Riding the bull was for extra cash at 5 pm.

You ever been to a rodeo? Maybe 5% of guys out here wear helmets. Not that they shouldn’t, but nearly everyone who gets on a bull at all “has what it takes.”
Had a family friend growing up who was a professional bulk rider in montana. He took a major brain injury and has never been the same guy, he's spent the last 12 years in and out of jail for various violent offenses and is pretty much crazy now
When I was a kid, no one in PBR wore a helmet.
Yeah and then they realized that living the rest of your life with a collapsed skull or broken face wasn’t the best way to live life. Plus bulls back then were smaller and didn’t weigh 1800lbs like the chiseled hulks they have now

@relate5903 everyone has a rough ending. Nobody makes it out alive.

I love how the traits which define one as "cowboy" seem to lean towards the life threatening
Very observant of you 🤣
And in the end they seem more full of life for it than the average.
Well nothing makes you feel more alive than staring death in the face
Ain’t never seen someone called badass for living life just below the speed limit. The idea of doing something that could kill you but being good enough at it to survive is kinda the whole point of the term yes.
Staring death in the face is what makes me feel alive. Most fire fighter won't tell you this but we joined cause we like the adrenaline rush of running into danger. Same goes to cowboys, it's a lifestyle that's dying out

Your podcast with Joe was a great listen. I really enjoyed it. You spoke with nuance in defending JB’s desire to just be a cowboy.
So I have been that young bull rider on the back of the chute 1972 on, Larry Mahan, Donny Brown, Wade Leslie and many other Legendary guys with big balls in their sack! Always a dying breed! But respect for nodding when it didn’t seem like things were in your favor.
You guys can put in a hard hat shell for ball caps. It goes in the inside and isn’t very thick but offers a lot of protection.
I know what you are talking about. It really doesn’t protect you that much, especially against something as powerful as bull.
And it really doesnt help your face if it smashes into the bulls head lol
I remember when the last few NHL players didn’t wear helmets…and that was when you could target the head and make initial contact shoulder to the opponent’s head with body checks. Much like the cowboys who don’t wear helmets today, they were the last of a dying breed.
Had a friend growing up who played hockey and rode bulls. He was a tough SOB. Think he works on the rigs now in the winter and does cattle drives in the summer.

Would love to jump on the back of one after all of these years just one more time. I wasn't no jb by no means but was some of my favorite memories I'll carry with me forever.
Back in the 90s.... I used to ride without a helmet and got a concussion.
Afterwards, I was told to start wearing a helmet. So, I stopped riding.

When I was riding bulls in the 70's we never wore helmets', or vest and a lot of us smoked. I think J B's riding skills speak for them selves, he's got it figured out smoking or not, helmet or no.
Watching him ride, you’d think he was a part of the bull. Expert isn’t the right word for him. He is well beyond that. If he wants to wear a hat and smoke cigarettes, I would be the last to tell him not to.
My buddy is 43, won a bunch of buckles when he was younger, never wore a helmet and still smokes. Missing a few teeth lol, but he's hard as nails.

When I was riding 44 years ago, it never occurred to me to put my hockey helmet on. It probably would have saved a concussion or two.
@@scottcrawford7674 Maybe so but before I got good at it when I was riding bulls or bareback I had a tendency to get too far back in the lean, let my shoulders drop to far and allow their hind quarters to propel me in to the back of their head.

WhenI was a teen my best friend was into bull riding, It was his family's tradition. At that time in bull riding it was a huge stigma to wear a helmet, slightly less so for wearing a chest protector.
