    It’s a good thing you were able to drive away after tangling with that iceberg. You’re a true hero for demonstrating it’s dangerous nature and since it has been removed you have no doubt save many a traveler countless hours of long recoveries and many tears of frustration.

    The traction board situation is exactly why all locks get taken off the vehicle while airing down at the beginning of the trip. If I don't have a key, it gets cut right away. I also won't use wheel locks. I try to reduce the number of things that can complicate a recovery or fix. I've seen this happen way too often.

    You can’t laugh and make fun of the sticks idea… but yea I have had to do this and it worked!! My family and I got two vehicles stuck pulling off the off the road, idiotically, into a muddy area while it was raining. Me and my brother stood there in the rain for a bit trying to figure out what to do. We were not in built rigs, had absolutely no gear, or experience, so I came up with a genius idea to gather sticks and brush from the surrounding bushes and plants.. and I do mean sticks not branches or logs. Put them around all the tires and we got two totally unequipped vehicles out of spinning mud. So yes it is possible, could help in a pinch.

    Getting stuck in snow and what to do: Your moving along, tires start to slip, you lose momentum until it stops you. Let off the gas immediately when you feel sinking instead of forward motion. Now usually you can reverse at this point but if you didn't stop acceleration in time you may find yourself bogged. DO NOT SPIN YOUR TIRES. Survey the situation from outside. Use a shovel to clear from infront of behind your tires. You want to clear any humps in front of the tires in the direction you would like to go. If bottomed out on frame clear snow as needed. Vehicle should move on its own. Now for the traction boards. Notice we didn't use them but they do have a place. Say if you were perpendicular to some big icy ruts and you didn't want to waste time digging. Fit a trac board in-between the tire and the rut to climb up it no problem. They're also good for filling really washed or deep voids. If you know a section of track will give you hassle. Try laying some traction boards out to help make it through. My .02. Imo shovel is #1 solo recovery tool.

    What are your preferred resources for finding dispersed camping spots? Just got into some light overlanding last year and looking forward to this summer!

    • @Western-Wild
      @Western-Wild Рік тому

      Gaia is the best mapping app right now. I usually flip back and forth between a high res satellite layer and the best available topo map for the area (usually USFS 2016 when in National Forests). Look for roads that intersect with creeks, lakes and viewpoints on the topo map, then switch to satellite to search for open areas with evidence that there is a campsite (fire rings and vehicles mostly). Mark a few options down before your trip since some of them might not be real sites, or may already be occupied.

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  Рік тому +1

      It has really just been a process of exploration for us. On all our trips, we try to get off the main corridor forest service roads. We look for spur roads and explore them. Some times it is just a dead end. Other times we fine a spectacular camp spot. We use Gaia or OnX maps to get a rough idea of what might be there. This can be time intensive. So, another good way is to go to some of the meet-and-greets that the local overlanding shops do. You can get connected with people and do some group outings and find some spots that way.

    • @aired-downoverland9239
      @aired-downoverland9239 Рік тому +1

      Jon is spot on. I think we’ve found 99% of our favorite spots just by exploring areas we like, our around lakes and river. We’ve had some pretty rough sites too, usually because we’re trying to find a spot in the dark.

    • @OverlandPNW
      @OverlandPNW  Рік тому +1

      I'm a big RTT fan. My brother Steve has the Gazelle and loves it. There are pros and cons to both. It really is a personal preference and price thing. The RTT raises your center of gravity. That's not a big deal unless you are doing very serious obstacles. I like being off the ground. We had a bear in camp one night that stood on its hind legs on our rigs (I was with another guy that had an RTT). The bear left scratches on both rigs. It may or may not have bothered us in ground tents. We'll never know. I'll let my brother chime in on his thoughts on ground tents.

    I have never used such devices. However, decades ago, I was in a situation where a cousin used his home made version of traction boards that worked like a charm. (the only time I did not have my own recovery gear) In this situation, I would have opted for a Hi-Lift jack and strap to the trees behind you. Or come along winch. I'd jack up the rig, no high lift needed, but I had a good 2x6 under the jack about three feet long so it wouldn't sink the jack in the sand. Then Id put the long 2x12 under the tire, lower the rig onto the board and drive right off, then id need to be on ground where I could lose momentum by stopping, and I'd run back and pick up the boards toss them in the bed and head out.
