    I REALLY want to become a marine biologist. I love animals, especially sea animals. I love all types of sea life, and I think it would be amazing. My ravorite animal is an octopus because they are so cute and cool. Its funny because when I was ababy, my 1st stuffed animal was a squid, and I want to be a marine biologist when i grow up! Thanks for the video!

      I also love the octopus - they're super intelligent too!

    "The trusty whiteboard!" The best way to illustrate the MANY paths to becoming a marine biologist! Although it is complex, you did a great job of breaking down the various major routes in a marine science career! Great job :)

    I've been learning about the marine life and the animals of the oceans. I've watched documentary videos about the animals and the marine life of the oceans! And I have learned so much about them! I went on a 7-day cruise this summer and went to Grand Turk Caicos islands in the west indies and I got to go snorkeling there and I saw lots of tropical fish! And I even saw a puffer fish! And I learned a lot about them!! I also got permission on my snorkeling guide and he let me touch and swim with a Nurse Shark! And I got to learn the difference between a good and a bad shark! It was so interesting and was so so beautiful!
    I am currently going to be a Senior this year in my high school year! And I plan on being a Marine Biologist someday in my life. Which I have already experienced a lot on what a Marine Biologist does! 🙂😁

    Love marine biology!!❤️❤️❤️ I am really passionate,but I have to wait a bit for developing it :))

    This is my passion career, I've known that since I was 3. I've fallen in love with the ocean for the longest time, I find it so cast and I see it as a big mystery. There's so much out there that we don't know even exists that could possibly be dying from our own actions, and some of these might have inspirations for new technology or cures for diseases. The fact that there are people out there harming it, acknowledge it, and brush it off their shoulder and continue harming it, makes me sad, and helping something that I love so much endearingly feels good. That's why I want to get a degree in marine biology and hopefully get a doctorate in it. I specifically am interested in sea conservation and sea exploration, exploration due to the fact that it involves engineering and technology in order to develop new ways to get deeper within the abyss. Very informative video, cheers!

      Telly'sMarineTales thanks! It's honestly depressing seeing how quickly the corals and ecosystems are getting destroyed, if only it were so simple to switch to environmental friendly power sources. We're bound to lose a few more species before we can slow down the climate change which is really heartbreaking.

    Would I be able to do field work if I have my undergraduate degree in computer scientist? Should I change my major to biology?

  • @matpikachu
    @matpikachu 6 років тому

    A post-doc is basically if u want to continue your Ph.D. research, but it's limited to another 4-5 years.

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  6 років тому

      Not necessarily - as far as I understand it you can do a post-doc on work that is different to your PhD. Also most post-docs are only around 2-3 years. At least the ones I've seen :)

    • @matpikachu
      @matpikachu 6 років тому

      So, it's just 2-3 years of research w/o getting a degree?

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  6 років тому

      I think so. As I understand it, the point is to work in a new lab with new people to increase your skill set and number of publications.

    • @marinessciencecafe5098
      @marinessciencecafe5098 6 років тому +1

      Basically the research world works with grants. Professors get grants that usually span over the course of 1-3 years, and that allows them to hire either PhD students, or post-docs, or both. Post-docs exist because there are not enough permanent researcher positions out there, so once a student graduates with a PhD, they often go on a wild hunt for post-docs (as a way to keep working rather than simply gain experience). Some, many, accumulate post-docs after post-docs for years before finding a permanent position, if ever they find one. It's a bit depressing but it's the reality of things, in marine biology and other ecology/biology-related fields.

    I would like to go back to school and become a killer whale Biologist what is your advice on focusing on one specific species?

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  6 років тому +4

      It's completely up to you but one has to remember that species don't live in isolation - they interact with their surroundings and many other species. So it's always better to have an overall understanding of many different things and not focus only on one specific thing.

    Hey thanks so much for the video! It definitely helped me to get a better understanding on how everything works and what options there are :) I still have a question about the Master. I just finished my bachelor and am planning on applying for my masters program soon. Now I have to decide what master i wanna do. Master of science by coursework or master of science by research. I still have the feeling that there is still so much to know and that I lack knowledge, on the other side i would like to work as a research assistant, so i guess an MRes would be better? I am still a bit confused.
    Would be great if you could give me an advice. I have already researched quite a bit but am still stuck

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  4 роки тому

      If you want to go on to do a PhD and a career in research I would recommend a master of science by research - it's the perfect time to start learning what real research is like!

    I have been interested in being a Marine Biologist since I was in about 7th or 8th grade. With me choosing a Marine Biologist as a career, its difficult for me to know what exact classes I have to take and what college to go to because when my guidance counselor asked what I wanted to be she didn't know what a Marine Biologist was. I have already taken Biology 1 my sophormore year and plan on taking Biology II my junior year and trying to decide which college is best for me. Both Coastal Carolina and USC Beaufort offers Biology as a major but Coastal Carolina also offers Marine Science! I tried to see if Marine Science and Marine Biology is the same since a Marine Biologist is basically a scientist it said Marine Science is a larger field. (if this makes any sense) I want to be more out into the field instead of in the lab and want to be working more on the animals such as stingrays, sharks and fish. I guess what im asking is if I choose Marine Science is it the same as taking Biology as a major? and with that can I still be a Marine Biologist?

    • @TellysMarineTales
      @TellysMarineTales  6 років тому

      Hi Amber. I think the difference between marine science and marine biology very much depends on the university and area you are in - but yes generally marine science is a bigger field that incorporates things like oceanography etc. It is helpful to have this kind of knowledge even if you want to work on animals. Either way, whichever one you choose to major in you can become a marine biologist :)

    What if you're not in highschool anymore and your grades in highschool were only ok? I ended up dropping regular school and going into a program cause I have crippling anxiety. Will I still be able to get into a decent college? And I'm not sure how much science or math I took but I think it was only what was required. 😕

      I started my undergrad in biology when I was 23, and I took and extra year to finish it, and a year off afterwards before starting my Masters! It all depends on whether you expect to have a stable job by the time you are 30 or not. If you are willing to spend years as a student with a low salary, then there is no reason why it should be too late. I love what I do, and although it can be tough not having a "real" job, I am so glad that I have chosen this path!

      Marine's Science Café ...so you started your path at the age of 23 by choosing biology as you had not chosen that field before? Actually i am at the same cross road you were, and i was hoping if you could help me clear my doubts about perusing the career as a marine biologist, cuz the undergrad requirements says biology, but I had a option in my high school course to choose between geography or biology, so i choose geography. But then its essential to have biology as a subject in undergrad. What should I do? I’m at the 4th year of my B-arch degree and got this awakening call last week. Can you please help me out?
