Very nice and well done overview about this locomotive, man! Really do love it when you pick up all the detail noticeable inside and out, box and locomotive.
The paint schemes are astounding. The sounds are some that I’ve never heard before. An amazing locomotive. I’m definitely going to order one of these. Great review and thanks again.
I rode behind this locomotive on a Chessie System Safety Express excursion from Columbus Ohio to Russell Kentucky in 1980 or 81, my favorite steam locomotive ever! I’ve been looking for an HO scale model of this locomotive for years and I just saw this at a train show today (8/17/19) in the Chessie System Railroads paint scheme which was the scheme she was wearing when I rode her. My jaw hit the floor and I think I crapped my pants as well. Got it brand new in the box for $525.00! I am one happy little boy and I can’t wait to fire her up! 😁
That is a very low mounted headlight lol. Personally i think the black finish looks more impressive. Another great BLI locomotive that is on my wishlist. The 614 in action for a coal train in the snow was one of my first VHS tapes with US steam a few decades ago and i was hooked after that.
jlwii2000 I really like those Horizon cars. They’re just so hard to find. I’m modeling the Amtrak Michigan Services and finding those exact cars are virtually impossible.
I am reworking a set of ihc cars. They are a set of chessie steam special cars that will pull double duty as the steam special and safety express. Also got a hold of a bli auxi in chesdie livery so im set!!#
Sure would love one of these! To bad there so expensive. Those there is a lot of cheap model train stuff out there. Just picked up a usra mallet for 150.
Hi James. Did you notice any motor whine from these. Mine is quite noisy. Nice loco though. Some detail mistakes though. Mostly the whistle, the lack of the folding front coupler and the front headlight is supposed to be vertical pile light. Love your videos. Thanks
Why can't manufacturers get the coloring of the builders plate correct? I see a lot of models produced have a black builders plate when the real locomotive has a red one.
Noticed on the greenbrier express version that the front looked bent down as Well as the light, and it looks way too much like a toy with that green that has a very plasticity look
Dam i bought One!!! Its my crown jewel of my collection but my local dealer allowed me to pay it off over a couple months but it was worth EVERY penny. Canfinally complete my chessie steam special/ safety express project!!
sure, go for it....sometimes it gets caught in the spam comment filter because it has a link but I'll pull it out when I see it and approve it for the comment section
Just got my order. But I’ve noticed that the front light doesn’t work! Do not see the front light works in your video. Is that the way is supposed to be? Thanks!
Do you have to use smoke? These are model trains not toy. You can not get a prototypical smoke column. If you did an operation session would last about ten minute before driving you crew out of the room. Lol
I have loved your channel for a long time, but I have got to lodge my first complaint-you have been in this business for too long not to have upgraded either your recording technique or your microphones. Listening to the sound decoders on your reviewed locomotives is so awful! Your miking or mics make them sound like Alex Graham Bell’s first phone! You really need to make some changes in the sound department. Hope I didn’t offend. Trying to help out. Thanks for a great channel!
They look great!
I can't believe the detail all over that steamer. What a fantastic looker.
sparky107107 check out my video and see a comparison to a true brass model.
C&O 614 pulling Gunderson intermodal cars
I've been waiting for this for so long. It's not even funny. Favorite train ever. Thanks for reviewing this.
not my favorite engine but definitely top 5

Is it me but I think the font on the greenbrier versions tender inspired the polar expresses font
Green is my favorite color.

I want to get ditchlights installed on one of them to model the NJ Transit excursions in the late 90s.
That would be sweet. I am looking for Walthers NJ transit cars but they are few, far between and expensive online.

awesome view video James well done I watch your videos all day
Holy smokes. She is as gorgeous and magnificent as I imagined. Great vid of a great engine
CV 232 is the smoke unit. A setting of about 12-15 yields great results
BLI should set that out of the box because it is really weak from the factory. Most people never bother to learn the CV adjustments.
It’s not even listed in their manual. I had to learn about it from a UA-cam video
I just ordered a BLI UP Challenger 4-6-6-4 from trail world. Your reviews work ha
Nice Looking Train
Jeffs Trains are still adjusting for the most part of the day ceremony
Oh wow! the BLI S-3 Northern is the second strongest locomotive now, the C&O J3a took the S-3's place.
Fantastic review, wish I could afford this stunning model.
An excellent review, thank you! I fancy the malachite green version especially. Greetings from Holland, Joachim
Nice looking engines!
Very nice, I like the paint scheme on the green engine.
The headlight seems to be bent downward on the green unit, I hope it is an easy fix.
Really awesome models
Oh geez James thanks! If only I wasn't putting together an Atlas New Jersey Transit train.....
Thank you @jlwii2000 Great informative video as always!! 🏆🥇
You should have seen what they pulled in real life lol
Superb level detail on these steam locomotives, i need to get a higher quality job so that i can afford these expensive $$ engines, haha.
Does anyone know what controller he is using?
F22 Whistle FTW!
Sure would love one of these! To bad there so expensive. Those there is a lot of cheap model train stuff out there. Just picked up a usra mallet for 150.
Nice trains!!🚆🚅
If you find the f59phi make a vid please I love that engine
👍
9:20 what whistle is that? Hancock Long Bell 3-Chime or a C&O "Hudson" whistle? and what decoder is that?
Where do you keep all your trains you have like thousands
Coupler on the green one caught on the crossing boards. Was that low coupler height or a low gladhand?
the entire pilot was angled down...it's a separate piece. I angled it back up to level and it's all good now.
I am wondering if you have ever reviewed the Marklin (Trix) Big Boy Locomotive or any other Marklin Locomotive?
How do you operate your bli locomotives and could I also use a mth dcs controller with them?
Hi James. Did you notice any motor whine from these. Mine is quite noisy. Nice loco though. Some detail mistakes though. Mostly the whistle, the lack of the folding front coupler and the front headlight is supposed to be vertical pile light. Love your videos. Thanks
16:15 low coupler much? Lol
Why can't manufacturers get the coloring of the builders plate correct? I see a lot of models produced have a black builders plate when the real locomotive has a red one.
The excursion version had a black builders plate. If you buy the in service version then you get the red builders plates
Cgodofawesom1212 The Foxehodge I did not know that. Thank you for the information.
Beautiful and pricey.
Noticed on the greenbrier express version that the front looked bent down as Well as the light, and it looks way too much like a toy with that green that has a very plasticity look
I mentioned the light in the video and fixed it. The front seems to be angled downward just a tiny bit a fraction of a mm more than others.
Why is it that BLI always gets the whistles wrong
I got mine today and its smoke unit died in about 5 minutes
Had added fluid. Looks like the headlight is bent down on the presidential.
Man you spent a lot of money
True
yeah this review wasn't cheap. I spent four figures for this one review.
jlwii2000 That’s cool 👍
Dam i bought One!!! Its my crown jewel of my collection but my local dealer allowed me to pay it off over a couple months but it was worth EVERY penny. Canfinally complete my chessie steam special/ safety express project!!
I did a review of this model compared to the key imports version. Would it be ok if I leave a link to this video on it?
sure, go for it....sometimes it gets caught in the spam comment filter because it has a link but I'll pull it out when I see it and approve it for the comment section
jlwii2000 ok, I’ll leave a link in my comment section and description section for others to see operations and sounds. Thank you sir.
Just got my order. But I’ve noticed that the front light doesn’t work! Do not see the front light works in your video. Is that the way is supposed to be? Thanks!
front headlight works, it's just pretty dim
Do you have to use smoke? These are model trains not toy. You can not get a prototypical smoke column. If you did an operation session would last about ten minute before driving you crew out of the room. Lol
You can usually turn off the smoke if you don't want to use it
You can either turn it off by CV setting or by a little switch underneath the cab.
that doesn't really bother me. I dont need prototypical perfection to run trains.
Nice models, but just like the real one today, that green while eye catching is ugly as crap.

Screw the smoke. Wasted addition. "Smoke" makes me sneeze and my eyes to water.
Michael Hirvela you can turn the smoke of either cv settings or a switch under the cab. So you don’t have to have it on.
