I live on the west coast in California and the plant sections at the Home Depot's here are like 1/6 size of yours there! I am so jealous! I always get encouraged after your videos to go see what they have and then it's like 2 rows and that's it, haha. It's so sad. I am living vicariously through your plant shopping videos!
I got so excited to see the flame Violets, my home depot doesn't have near the selection. And I am not sure who labels their plants, but my Home Depot marks monsteras as Philodendrons 😂
That variegated cactus was really pretty...and that's the reason we re-shop at the same stores...for that one chance you find the perfect pot of a plant. Gets you everytime. Thanks for the shopping trip.
Aww don’t be embarrassed! You can tell people you’re making educational videos because that’s exactly what they are to me. I learn so much from this type of video, just like your care videos, thank you! 💕
Thanks for the shopping tour. I love to see what's in the stores because it gives a good indication of what we can expect in our summer. That yellow golden pothos was my favourite. Some good genetics in that one.
I’m glad to see you check the outdoor plants at Home Depot. Last week at my local HD, I found (and bought) a Cyperus alternifolius, or umbrella palm, which was a popular houseplant in the 1970s. Earlier in the summer, I found large Rex begonias being sold as perennials. And, I found 4” pots of Birds of Paradise for about $5 each. Both were being sold in the outdoor portion of Home Depot, instead of in their indoor greenhouse area. Great video!
😂 that's my problem! I own TWO philo brasil AND YET everytime I go into a box store, oh look, it's a brasil!! They are just SO beautiful from those growers.
I found P. brazil at a Lidl's food store for 4.99 a few weeks ago. It is a starter plant and It was marked as a tradescantia which I knew was wrong. Had to come home and look on the internet for an ID. I figured it was some type of Philodendron!! I was happy I found it.
Ugh, so jealous. 😢 It is so hot and dry here in Phoenix, our Lowe's and Home Depot have so little. Lowe's especially has a lot of empty spaces in the indoor plant area. Our stores here don't even keep houseplants outside. 🥵🔥 Thanks for the tour!
They have been finding several types of Hoyas in the small pots. Hope I can find the Gracilis and get several. Would also like to find the silver band maranta. Great trip, thank you.
I've been waiting for a big box store videooooo! Thank you so much! Also, idk of you've ever shooped for plants at Trader Joe's, but I work at one in Gainesville, FL and we just got a 6inch pot of Ficus for $10.99 and I got a Shivereana!! It's so so pretty and the size of the plant for what it is are so good. My store also has a Burgundy ficus too but I'm hoping we get a Tineke someday soon!!
That orbifolia was beautiful! I didn’t think I’d ever want one but seeing how big those leaves can get, plus their silvery streaks… hopefully I find one someday! Oh and the VERY orange leafed philodendron at Home Depot is one I think I’d also pick up cuz that’s pretty unique!
Those fuzzy ones w the blooms are especia, cousin to a violet. I have not seen them at the big box stores. They do need extra humidity if you decide to get one. They bloom beautifully!
@@sydneyelise7260 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I am actually stressed. Some of them have pest issues and it has gotten into my private plant collection. 😥 The plant store is not even mine and I take care of the plants...
Even though I already know you love caladiums its always good to hear that you do. A lot of my planty friends hated them so much and I really felt it whenever I try to flex how beautiful my caladiums are.
I hear that from lots of people I watch on UA-cam “I’m not really a begonia person” as they pick it up and put in I. Their cart. At least you resisted, this time! lol 😂
16:00 oh my gosh, I just got an alocasia that I thought was a green shield because the older leaves looked like a silver dragon and the newer leaves were deep green and waxy…. BUT THEN…. It put out a new leaf that looks like that! With the deep v sinus and pointy lobes! The stem is bright green with purple dots, maybe it’s a hybrid?? I’m at a losss!!!
My home depot dosnt have much in the way of house plants either. I can relate to the heat, my car has been reading over 100F everytime I enter it. Keep cool and hydrated! ❤
Amazing trip! At the home depot around the chicagoland area we are starting to get anthuriums. Hopefully there might be a nice healthy one that you may get! 🎉
Where I am there hasn't been much new stuff at the big boxes since the Mother's Day stock up of houseplants. Other than looking for the Walmart Costa exclusive "Desert Escape" plants that have recently hit stores, not much to get excited hunting for in the summer heat.
That black-striped Canna, at the end, is a hybrid called ‘Cleopatra'. Not sure if it’s a hybrid, cultivar, varietal, or what. lol. Speaking of Canna, another thing I’ve found lately is they do GREAT in semi-hydro. Outdoors, too. Of course I’m in SoCal so most ppl would have to bring them in in winter. But like, if you ever have a larger batch of DIY Pon, as I made, or even just a little extra bit of LECA (it doesn’t even need to be a massive container), it’s a perfect match. Canna tubers will grow partially or completely submerged, as long as the foliage is out in the air. So they make water roots quickly and adapt very well to semi-hydro 😊
Went to Home Depot just for some wall mounts and was just strolling through the plants and found an incredibly variegated PPP. And i mean like half moons of pink leaves. I never get anything from big box stores bc they're treated with hormones for store longevity, but I could not resist, it was just too pretty 😅
@@plantsbymelissaYou are a celebrity to me! I'm so thrilled that you replied to my comment!! I also received one of your anthuriums and it's gorgeous! Thank you for all that you do and I look forward to more! Thanks Melissa! ❤
My local Lowe’s has big beautiful alocasia, and they’re ALWAYS covered in spider mites 😢 I want to buy them so bad, but the risk is too high when there are that many
It depends! Sometimes I get really lazy with repotting. It depends on the plant too because some can stress more easily. I have several in their original mix still that I need to repot. I usually give them a little time to acclimate :)
Hi Melissa, are you very sure about the ID of the Philodendron Summer Glory? I bought that plant at my local Lowes without an ID label on any of those at the store. I kind of thought it is Summer Glory when I searched the internet, however an online vendor who sells a lot of Philodendrons said he thought my plant is P. Glorious.....not Gloriosum mind you. Glorious is a cross of Gloriosum x Melanochrysum. Was the plants you looked at have an ID label? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I have traveled to 3 local Lowes and there are so many great houseplants. I found a P. brandtianum and a good size Monstera deliciosa (for my sister) both for 1/2 price: $10. And I bought a P. rojo congo which you helped ID for me in your video. I have been looking since I bought it on sale for 7.00 and did not have that on my list of possibilities. I thought may be erubescens. Sometimes they are on the 1/2 price rack! Thanks for a great video. It is so fun shopping for plants!
Fun fact, the lady at my home depot told me georgia controls the temperature of all stores across the US, so unless it’s blazing hot there we all get stuffy stores 😂
Teddy Bear vine, that’s a new plant for me and one I liked a lot. Hmmmmm … . Yesterday I purchased 3 tiny Ponytail Palms that I will give to friends and family after they’ve grown a bit bigger. Just wondering, has anyone heard of a plant called Pregnant Onion? Not long ago I bought a couple plants at a farmers market where the seller had labeled them as Ponytails. After looking at them a while I became suspicious about that identity and soon figured out that they were actually Pregnant Onions. Oh well, not a big deal but I much prefer Ponytails. Live and learn.
Eeoowww spider mites! That is so sad! I wonder if “normal” people would see those bugs before buying them? The smaller plants are definitely more difficult to see. That little exotica was adorable and I am not a Hoya gal.
