- Here I show the techniques I use to begin a carving. Blocking out your carving gets everything in place and helps show what the final carving will look like ( of course, without any of the details)

This is Glenna Adams and I was the one in SDC who sold you the tools and saw you at the siminar at SDC each time you came. You are doing great and I have told several people about you and they have been watching you. Me too.
Van, good instruction on cutting in a rough out. The setting up the face just prefect instruction.
Came over on Doug Linker’s recommendation…subscribed and binge watching your vids… very helpful✌️👊
Iam from Doug Linkers channel too .. great work

Found your videos a few days ago. Great job. Thanks for taking the time to make these videos.
I really like your approach and your teaching methods. Looking forward to more videos
Once again thank you so much.
Awesome video Van, great teaching, thank you for sharing!
Thanks Van, those are helpful instructions for a rough out
Thanks for all the tips. I just discovered your UA-cam channel, I’ve found a lot of help from them. I want to get started again in carving. However I’m scared because they won’t be perfect. Thanks for the video on just carve and you’ll get better. That is encouraging!
There are no mistakes, just happy learning moments and opportunities! I learn something new everyday.
I would love to carve like you do I carve a bit bit not that good the video helped a lot thanks so much
Thanks for the videos!
Nice
I am new to carving & I just , sort of stumbled, on your video and I am so glad I did. Then I heard Doug Linker mention your name. I really enjoy & learn from your instruction. I live in St. John’s, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada. I look forward to your next video. I would like to see how you create a cut out if you have the time to make a video on that. Thanks again.
Bruce, check out Kevin Coates channel he's from NF also, and a fantastic carver,
(Rusty fender) yes, I know about Kevin’s site. But thanks for your reply. I have visited Kevin on a few times. He lives about 2 hours drive from where I live. He is a wonderful carver. It is such a privilege & joy to sit and watch him carve & be able to ask a few questions. It is amazing to see him use that modified fish knife to carve. I have been carving for about two years. How long have you been carving.
You may have answered this a million times, but do you make your rough outs? I'd love to see a video of that process.
Thanks.
I don't cut them out myself. We plan on putting out a video showing the whole process in the future though!
Do you always use roughouts? Or do you start with a Blanc too?
Hey Van, what size V-Tool is that your using ?? Thanks for your videos...
1/4 v-tool.
I know that there is still a lot of skill remaining in the detail. However, I can't help thinking that buying a rough out is cheating. Why am I wrong? If I get done with something, good or no so much, I want to know that I made that.
I like to think of a roughout as an opportunity for an in depth study of that carver's design and layout process, as well as a chance to focus on practicing details, again in the style of the original carver. Also like Van said, you have many opportunities to make the rough out your own. It's really all in what you are trying to get out of it!
I'd like to have experience making the artwork from start to finish as well.
