Thx for watching mate, the bridge is from a company named Maverick. And the pick ups are Dimarzio, the neck was custom made by them especially for this guitar. I wanted it to be a humbucker but aesthetically look like a standard Tele neck pick up... Hope that helps.

Cool, yes mate lots of ways to do it... I also like the open chords in fourths. This did help me with the recent tour I did though playing some of the more standard music with open B and E... But tbh for my own music I defo prefer the open 4's chords. All the best and thx for watching. ;-)
Quite. You can also easily find a partial capo which is specifically designed to fret only some of the strings. Gives you best of both worlds ... and also opens up other options. In my view this is cheaper and doesn't require a more invasive hack like this.
The only tuners which would work in this context would be the Bill Keith guitar ones. They're sold in pairs. Hipshots are too big to be placed beside each other. Only annoyance would be having two different looking tuners, as the Keith pegs are similar to banjo ones. And these would also be expensive. A pair of Keith pegs cost around 260 bucks.
I tuned down to DGCFA#D#, put a capo across the first fret, then cut a capo into a four string capo and put that across the lower four strings to get me back to to EADGBE. It worked well enough but it wouldn't return to tune after an aggressive bend. This specialized fretboard is a much better solution for a guitar that you plan on keeping in fourths permanently

I have a Sauria S6 on order with Tom and am seriously considering having it done as I am struggling to see the downsides (I’m not switching back to standard - May the 4ths be with you!)
Oh wow that's amazing... Well as you well know Tom is the man, so might be worth at least asking to see what he says.... but my 2 cents are it's great and you could always capo the 1st' fret which also gives you the full 4th's tuning.... That is something I've only dabbled in myself but worked pretty well. Also I guess you'll have a few other guitars in your collection so those could be tuned standard and then you'd have one of the very few Hybrid tuned guitars... But of course it needs your careful consideration. I'm impressed you're set on sticking in Fourths. Good on you. All the very best mate. ;-)
The Animals as Leaders boys have a similar set of extra frets behind the nut on their 8-string Strandbergs, but they have them on their two thickest strings. Hey Alex, I ran into tuning dilemmas growing up, until I grabbed the Roland stuff … I know you’re very familiar with the Roland VG-99… I’ve seen your great product demos 😊👍 I also grabbed the Antares ATG-1 and Peavy AT-200 to allowed me to experiment with alternate tunings …. or to be able to play along with various cover tunes I liked without going crazy winding around tuners all day…….. Unfortunately, they always discontinue these items ….. The Antares is great because it also helps get a really great intonation of the guitar throughout the entire fretboard. I also like the Antares ATG-1 for being able to plug into any gear I like, and still have those great tuning intonation options. * Why not use something like that to switch between your 4ths or Standard tunings at a touch of a button. I’ve seen you do a expression pedal / pedal steel type change of tuning with VG-99 …… Instead set it to go between Standard tuning or 4ths? 😊
Alex, or anyone thats reading this. Any material, books, guides, charts, etc related to this tuning that you think are useful? Would also love to see more about it from you yourself! I'm thinking of taking the 4ths tuning journey myself.
Hi mate, well there isn't any material that I'm aware of on HYBRID tuning as such but a reasonable amount on fourths. Essentially this is just 4ths tuning with a fret extension to allow for standard open chords... I have another video called An introduction to 4ths which you may find interesting and one discussing chords and one discussing pentatonic s too... here is the link to the first one... ua-cam.com/video/HOvSGj9F3f0/v-deo.html I hope it helps.
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Thanks! I was actually referring to 4ths tuning when I made the comment (forgot I was commenting on the hybrid tuning video), but the fret extension is a pretty ingenious idea. Your videos on 4ths are really great too, I'll keep studying those, but I was wondering if there were any books/other material that you've come across. I'll keep looking around though. P.s. Keep making videos man! I'll make sure to check out all the other educational type stuff you've got, but you demonstrations are top notch mate!
Very cool invention! Do you find that the action of the two highest open strings is noticeably higher? They now have to clear the c and f, instead of those notes being the zero fret, but I imagine it’s such a small height difference at the end of the instrument that it’s not noticeable
Thx Nick, no not at all actually. I love having a low action, and Tom makes absolutely sure the necks on these guitars are so so solid that you could run a train over them.. ;-) So in other words they are the perfect angle for a low action across the entire fret board including the zero fret... Honestly if you could feel it right now I think you'd be shocked how great it feels. Thx for stopping by.. ;-)
So if I played an E Major an octave up and fretted the E and B on the 11th fret, that’s what you’re doing with the modified nut in open position? Thanks for posting.
Alex, thanks a lot for your videos!!! Can you ask me pls ... your sound guitar in the second part of this video, how I can do the same sound using boss gt-1000?
I still have no idea how this works lol. How can you be tuned to EADGCF but still play open e major? this is some witchcraft. What does the extra frets give you?
Indeed it is witchcraft... :) :) :) The extra fret is what creates the B & E open strings... If fretted on the mini fret next to the nut you get the Straight Fourths tuning like normal...
I remember seeing one of Tosin Abasin kinda weird experimental guitar, he had kind off the same conversion thingy but on the lower strings ( and it was movable) so he could go from standart to drop tuning in an instant. Still a really good trick that actually work for you and your 4th tuning!
Cheers mate, yes someone else mentioned this also... Really cool... I remember when he showed me his prototype Ibanez before it was out but I don't think it had that nut thing on it at that time...
Why dont you just add a B-bender om both the B and E strings, so you can use the strap plug to pull the guitar up to C and F when you want to play in fourths? Or do the reverse, like a pedal steel, where you can detune the two strings by a semitone on the spot with a similar mechanism? Much less hassle practically than to stretch your fingers off every night. Just a thought.
The jam at the end was nothing short of jaw dropping. Hope that's made into a full song!
Thank you Aidan, that's very kind of you to say... All the very best
This extended fretboard trick has been done for years, but usually on the lower strings. I'm more curious about the bridge and electronics myself.

* Why not use something like that to switch between your 4ths or Standard tunings at a touch of a button. I’ve seen you do a expression pedal / pedal steel type change of tuning with VG-99 …… Instead set it to go between Standard tuning or 4ths? 😊
That music, in the end, was absolutely stunning! Any chance you give lessons?
Alex, or anyone thats reading this. Any material, books, guides, charts, etc related to this tuning that you think are useful? Would also love to see more about it from you yourself! I'm thinking of taking the 4ths tuning journey myself.
Hi mate, well there isn't any material that I'm aware of on HYBRID tuning as such but a reasonable amount on fourths. Essentially this is just 4ths tuning with a fret extension to allow for standard open chords... I have another video called An introduction to 4ths which you may find interesting and one discussing chords and one discussing pentatonic s too... here is the link to the first one... ua-cam.com/video/HOvSGj9F3f0/v-deo.html
I hope it helps.
Thanks for sharing!!!!
Always a pleasure.
Would the "poor man" solution be to capo 1st fret on lowest 4 strings?
Your a clever guy! And a hell of a player😁
Thank you very much Ryan. ;-)
Nice to see a UK luther being highlighted. Inspiration from the Kubicki Factor maybe?? 🤔
Yeah man, I've not heard of the Kubicki's but just looked them up... Pretty cool .;-) Thx 4 watching
What about a little capo for those 2 strings? So when you dont need them for a song, you put it and its a regular 4ths tuned guitar
I sometimes tune to fourths,, it's a very nice neck layout
Lead Sound from heaven
Wow just amazing tone and lydian feel❤
Thank you mate.
i love steven wilson
He's a great Artist for sure. ;-)
Thats a nice C extension you have there.
Cheers mate, thx for watching.
whats that bridge/ pickup plate combo . look really neat for a Tele
looks like Blade Runner trem
Hi Jeff it's called maverick... One of the only companies we could find that to a traditional looking tele plate with a trem. ;-)
@@AlexHutchingsMusic Thanks, it looks good and would still give the great tele sound you get from that metal plate interacting with the pickup
@@jeffhigh2 Yes exactly mate. ;-)
brilliant!
Thx for stopping by.. ;-)
Alex Hutchings my pleasure!
You're amazing
Thx so much 👍🎸🙏
So if I played an E Major an octave up and fretted the E and B on the 11th fret, that’s what you’re doing with the modified nut in open position? Thanks for posting.
Alex, thanks a lot for your videos!!!
Can you ask me pls ... your sound guitar in the second part of this video, how I can do the same sound using boss gt-1000?
Genius
Interesting tuning, might experiment with something like that. What songs at 5:35 and 5:43? Thanks!
Cheers mate. The song snippets are from Ancestral and a track called hand cannot erase. Thanks for watching.
Legend🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
can this be used for dropped tunnings too?
Not this particular guitar but the concept could be used for sure.. ;-) Thx for watching
I still have no idea how this works lol. How can you be tuned to EADGCF but still play open e major? this is some witchcraft. What does the extra frets give you?
Because there's a bit of fretboard going behind the nut just for those two strings which means that the tuning is staggered when you play open chords
Indeed it is witchcraft... :) :) :) The extra fret is what creates the B & E open strings... If fretted on the mini fret next to the nut you get the Straight Fourths tuning like normal...
@@AlexHutchingsMusic fascinating. Appreciate the reply and LOVE seeing more p4 content on here. Keep up the quality stuff 🙏👍
@@amdsixtyfour THx man. Thx for watching. ;-)
I remember when he showed me his prototype Ibanez before it was out but I don't think it had that nut thing on it at that time...
beautiful , the sound is awesome , whts your pickups on this really beautiful guitare .?
All pick ups are Dimarzio.
@@AlexHutchingsMusic , i know , but the models please ? thanks
Just amazing guitar and especially mindblowing playing!! 🤯
What amp/plugin do you use for this incredible tone?
Salut from France 🇫🇷🙏🏼
Hi mate, I believe it was the Laney Ironheart with the new black country custom pedals.... Thx for watching. ;-)
Been playing in fourths for 5yrs now and just seeing this. Mind blown bruh!! So you’re tuning is still EADGCF?
Thanks mate, Yes still tuning in Fourths.... CF (except this guitar) tuned with the hybrid system. All the best 👍🎸🙏
