Wipe down leaves often and when it gets spider mites get to shower and thoroughly shower every leaf both sides and every crevice everywhere. Let dry. Treat with I insecticide for spider mites (or several different ones in rotation) and do that spray every 2 or 3 days for at least two weeks but possibly a month. Before spraying shower and let dry again.
A good rotation is, mother plant, larger pup, new pup. Three stems on the corm. When the mother plant produces bananas, harvest and cut it down and the next larger stem becomes the new mother, and you let a new pup grow. The surplus pups, you can cut out and pot up or dispose of however you want. Also bear in mind if you use a weaker pot, the roots and corm can split the pot. Been there. Make sure you use a robust pot and not a blow-mold nursery container.
It's extremely hard to find any information about separating pups from the mother. I have had trouble after separating a mother from pups in the past (killing both), so keeping three within the pot before separating is great advice, thank you!!

Fertilizer programme: Month 1 - 5: 16:16:16 (150g/plant/month) Month 6: MOP (100g/plant - one time application only on month 6 or when you see the last short leaf before flowering comes out) + 12:12:17:2(100g/plant/month) Month 7 till harvest: 12:12:17:2 (150g/plant/month) For the suckers to ensure maximum growth. 2 ways to go around it. Cut and don't dig as to not damage the roots. First: Only keep 1 at 3 months old and another at 8 months old. Second: Only keep one once the flower comes out. Choose only sword suckers as this is the one with vigorous growth rate. As for leaves. Maintain 8 leaves while growing, 6 once the flower comes out and 4(excluding the small leaves before flowering) once you cut the flower. Cut the flower around 2 inch after the last bunch. I am from the Caribbean and your plant looks really healthy. I have lived with banana, plantain, and various types of bananas in my back yard all my life actually all pur waste water is designed to run to them. As for the mother and baby shoots you need to removed them for the mother to grow and flower or they will stop her from growing or producing because the pot is to small and they are all competing for the nutrients in the soil. So just remove them stick the shoots in water untill you report them and if ever you find used clay pots they are the best

Some of that leaf damage on your banana tree I think is due to your mite problem! I've had very similar experiences with similar size leafy plants. Check the undersides and try and wipe down your leaves as much as possible! Wonderful grow room setup, really a pleasure to check it out.

Warren Peart, how did your banana plant fare after the neem oil/soap treatment a month ago [today's date is 24 Apr 2022]? Ignore all the below info as it isn't necessary to give an update on your neem oil/soap treatment. The reason I am asking is I have 3 banana and or plantain plants [unfortunately the nursery didn't have all their trees/plants/etc. labeled🙄.... one is great plantain ....not sure of what the other two are.... plus fruit trees [peaches, guava, mango, avocadoes, coconut, etc..... 30+ different plants in which I got 90% a month ago [21 Mar 2022]..... and now that the leaves are budding out.... critters have started to eat the leaves..... I have enclosed them in 1/2 inch pvc and covered them in Tulle two days ago..... but unfortunately.... thus far, the Tulle has areas of weak points to let insects in..... and of course, there were already insects inside while putting up my "fortress"😒. So.... it is time to use the neem oil/Castille soap mix especially since my longest-held [since Oct 2020 which was maybe a year old when I got it] fruit tree (mango tree) has been attacked a week ago and has the black spot fungus because I moved location and placed it under a bigger tree with all the saplings.... unfortunately, it rained a little bit.... and this little bit of rain and shade infected my tree. Only half the leaves from the bottom were infected.... but then a couple of days later.... all the leaves are infected. I have read reviews on Organic 100% Neem Oil Cold Pressed has killed some people's trees! I have almost US$2,000 in trees.... not only that.... but this would be a devastation if so many plant lives ended when I was trying to save them! Plus, the mix ratio doesn't lend for a small quantity.... and it needs to be used within 10 hours after mixed..... and should be used either early morning or dusk.... 🤪 Thanks in advance!
@@nathaliewilson1817 The neem/soap has been so far successful. It is key to use it at night or dusk, or the sun will cause the oil to burn the plant and kill it. By morning, the oil dissipates from the leaves. I used neem cold pressed/soap mixture. 1 tablespoonful neem to 1 tablespoon soap, thoroughly mixed and then added 4 litres of rain water. Throughly shake/stir and spray liberally over and undersides of the leaves and stalks. This is probably a lighter mix ratio than what a nursery might use, but I erred on the side of caution. I repeated once every 9-10 days. Instructions suggests rinsing the leaves but I skipped that. I will hopefully get them outside in another month, when it warms up here. The rain will do them good. Best of luck with yours. I feel your pain to the wallet at the thought of losing the plants!

I was watching several hours of videos until 1a.m. CST this morning and this ~11 minutes video [highly recommended to watch] : ua-cam.com/video/t8bbUCxgZao/v-deo.html is something I am going to try with the 4 teaspoons of Baking Soda to 1 gallon of lukewarm water as a fungicide spray at the 0:47 seconds of video. I think it should be less harmful, and much cheaper too. On the same link they have an Organic Pesticide you can apply every 3 days at the 5:18 minutes mark of the video of 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda, 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil, couple drops of liquid soap (I am planning on using the 100% Organic Castile soap I bought…. but several videos I watched last week that recommend Castile soap said you can also use Dawn soap) in a gallon of water. Of course, access to rain water in anything dealing with plants is superb and much more beneficial than our tap water! So, I will save Neem Oil for now and experiment at a later date especially if the Baking Soda solutions do not work. The same guy (The Ripe Tomato Farm) also have another natural remedy of Hydrogen Peroxide in an ~ 8 minutes video long video found here: ua-cam.com/video/jU4N5PLKX7M/v-deo.html (you can find the summarized/recapped solutions at 7:26 minutes of the video). Since I have a lot of Baking Soda on hand, I will use the Baking Soda solution now and then go stock up on Hydrogen Peroxide later this morning and research the three different types natural remedy [Baking Soda; Hydrogen Peroxide; and Neem Oil] benefits online and in using and observing. I will probably do a combination over the years with any other learned natural remedy for my upcoming permaculture food forest I am getting ready to start [I should hopefully hear in another day or two if I won the bid on rural land as the trees/plants are waiting for a permanent home!]
@@nathaliewilson1817 You’re collection sounds like a lot of fun to care for. I hope that the neem works out. I had never heard of it needing to be used within 10 hours. I keep mine in a gallon container and use it when I need it and it appears to be working just fine. Also, keep in mind that it’s coming up beneficial bug season (at least here it is) so wasps, lady bugs, lacewings, etc., will help rid your precious plants of the infestations of nutrient sucking bugs. It would be interesting to see your set up.
I had already trimmed off 1 leaf that had brown on it.! Will that leaf be Ok now.?? Plz N Ty 😮 I also had taken a few dead leaves🍃 from the bottom will this hurt the banana plant.?😢
If you wanted to, when a pup gets 12-18 inches (30-45cm) you can check if a pup has it's own roots coming off the umbilical between it and the mother plant. If it does you can cut the umbilical, leave the pup in place for a day or two then repot. Don't remove pups that don't have their own root system, as some of them help the main plant to get water and nutrients.

No it did not. It got spider mites so I threw it out. But there is a new one in the making now! How old is it? I takes a while I think. 1-2 years at least. Everything else sounds very good!

Hey Chris, i have a question. Two months ago I got a Red banana as a gift and the leaves are drying out. It start as a yellow spot and then it turns Brown and spreads. I dont know whether it is because of lack of water or too much of. Even new bright Green leaf developed these. I keep the soil wettish i would say, it is damp to the touch but it is not soaked. I fertilized it once with syntehic fertilizer and once with my home compost Tea. Also should i water it from the top or from the bottom. Thank you.
I buy my bananas 🍌 at Cornwall during our families holiday. Cornwall is nice hot weather than north east of England 🇬🇧 where I leave . This year I will try to growing bananas 🍌 until will had fruits. Normal my bananas in Philippines farm. Its had 3 inches hight had already fruits. Its take around 6 month from planting seeds. But its take 3 month if already grow from 3 inches. I try it yo grow in my green house. I already had 🥑 abocado plants growing it from seeds. Now its healthy inside green house.
ive noticed banana plants hate self watering pots. I have a Veranda Banana tree I potted a week and a half ago watered it once and not since and its still reading wet on my water meter. I may take off the self watering saucer from the pot
Banna plants are my favorite plant as well. My question is that my plants leave look week to me. Best way to describe is they wrinkle to me. They are still green but they also don’t feel study to me. Wow great job growing bananas an guava ,i am from the tropics so i grow bananas,plantain, an figs all the same plant ,as a rule 1plant an 1 sucker together if more the fruits gets smaller ,it does harm to transplant some of the suckers if alot comes up
I took my "pups" when then had like 5 leafs, they have their own roots so no problem to plant in their own pots. My banana is online like 1 year old, growing in greenhouse and now on wintertime i got some led lights in my garage :P
Have you ever got it to flower? I know some growers have done it in here in Sweden but i think it took a couple of years.. I have just gotten two Musa Tropicana, will grow under 200 w led now in the beginning, maybe i will get some more later. I will have it in my greenhouse next summer, short period here in Sweden though :D

True, but depending on the variety of banana, could be anywhere from 35-60 leaves before you get a flower. I’m assuming you have a dwarf cavendish. 40-60 leaves. I’ve been growing in Canada for over a decade as a hobby. 4 years in a row I’ve gotten bananas. Just bring it outside, and plant in a bigger pot in late may. I’m sure you have a similar climate in Norway. The only problem is the growing season is too short. It’s still nice when you get a flower. And you never have to go back to the nursery. With all the puppies shooting off

You've provided fairly good info but I think, you need to provide more information on how to treat the pests that you mentioned in the video. How big pot should I use for this baby plant? Just make sure it's glacial rock dust. Get the seller to confirm this by email. Else you are likely to end up with mining waste that contains a lot of nasty stuff.
what specific variety is this? i would really like one that makes pups to propogate a few, since the most common ones (ensete ventricosum) just flower and die and dont make pups or seeds or any other means of propogation

You should transplant those pups :) without worries, it's not damaging the main corm if you remove children with a knife, and you get one new plant from each of those after approximatelly 21 days, when banana accepts the new environment :)
Try to replant all those pups in seperate vases & market them.. many are wanting to have one in their garden or backyard & doesn't know where to buy one.

I like to line the bottom of my pots with lava rocks for extra water retention/minerals.

I have almost US$2,000 in trees.... not only that.... but this would be a devastation if so many plant lives ended when I was trying to save them! Plus, the mix ratio doesn't lend for a small quantity.... and it needs to be used within 10 hours after mixed..... and should be used either early morning or dusk.... 🤪

@@nathaliewilson1817 The neem/soap has been so far successful. It is key to use it at night or dusk, or the sun will cause the oil to burn the plant and kill it. By morning, the oil dissipates from the leaves. I used neem cold pressed/soap mixture. 1 tablespoonful neem to 1 tablespoon soap, thoroughly mixed and then added 4 litres of rain water. Throughly shake/stir and spray liberally over and undersides of the leaves and stalks. This is probably a lighter mix ratio than what a nursery might use, but I erred on the side of caution. I repeated once every 9-10 days. Instructions suggests rinsing the leaves but I skipped that. I will hopefully get them outside in another month, when it warms up here. The rain will do them good. Best of luck with yours. I feel your pain to the wallet at the thought of losing the plants!

I was watching several hours of videos until 1a.m. CST this morning and this ~11 minutes video [highly recommended to watch] : ua-cam.com/video/t8bbUCxgZao/v-deo.html is something I am going to try with the 4 teaspoons of Baking Soda to 1 gallon of lukewarm water as a fungicide spray at the 0:47 seconds of video. I think it should be less harmful, and much cheaper too. On the same link they have an Organic Pesticide you can apply every 3 days at the 5:18 minutes mark of the video of 2 tablespoons of Baking Soda, 1 tablespoon of Olive Oil, couple drops of liquid soap (I am planning on using the 100% Organic Castile soap I bought…. but several videos I watched last week that recommend Castile soap said you can also use Dawn soap) in a gallon of water. Of course, access to rain water in anything dealing with plants is superb and much more beneficial than our tap water! So, I will save Neem Oil for now and experiment at a later date especially if the Baking Soda solutions do not work. The same guy (The Ripe Tomato Farm) also have another natural remedy of Hydrogen Peroxide in an ~ 8 minutes video long video found here: ua-cam.com/video/jU4N5PLKX7M/v-deo.html (you can find the summarized/recapped solutions at 7:26 minutes of the video).
Since I have a lot of Baking Soda on hand, I will use the Baking Soda solution now and then go stock up on Hydrogen Peroxide later this morning and research the three different types natural remedy [Baking Soda; Hydrogen Peroxide; and Neem Oil] benefits online and in using and observing. [Note: this ~4 minutes video said not to use Hydrogen Peroxide unless needed: ua-cam.com/video/J-5l8PebbpU/v-deo.html].
I will probably do a combination over the years with any other learned natural remedy for my upcoming permaculture food forest I am getting ready to start [I should hopefully hear in another day or two if I won the bid on rural land as the trees/plants are waiting for a permanent home!]
@@nathaliewilson1817 You’re collection sounds like a lot of fun to care for. I hope that the neem works out. I had never heard of it needing to be used within 10 hours. I keep mine in a gallon container and use it when I need it and it appears to be working just fine. Also, keep in mind that it’s coming up beneficial bug season (at least here it is) so wasps, lady bugs, lacewings, etc., will help rid your precious plants of the infestations of nutrient sucking bugs. It would be interesting to see your set up.

They lose the dark when they grow older unfortunately.
If you wanted to, when a pup gets 12-18 inches (30-45cm) you can check if a pup has it's own roots coming off the umbilical between it and the mother plant. If it does you can cut the umbilical, leave the pup in place for a day or two then repot. Don't remove pups that don't have their own root system, as some of them help the main plant to get water and nutrients.

Did your banana plant ever produce bananas? I’ve followed yours and mine is huge but not flowering yet. In Canada so it’s indoors. 16 hours lights. 50% humidity. 75F temperature. Sheep compost. Worm wee. Any tips?
No it did not. It got spider mites so I threw it out. But there is a new one in the making now! How old is it? I takes a while I think. 1-2 years at least. Everything else sounds very good!

Hey Chris, i have a question. Two months ago I got a Red banana as a gift and the leaves are drying out. It start as a yellow spot and then it turns Brown and spreads. I dont know whether it is because of lack of water or too much of. Even new bright Green leaf developed these. I keep the soil wettish i would say, it is damp to the touch but it is not soaked. I fertilized it once with syntehic fertilizer and once with my home compost Tea. Also should i water it from the top or from the bottom. Thank you.
I buy my bananas 🍌 at Cornwall during our families holiday. Cornwall is nice hot weather than north east of England 🇬🇧 where I leave . This year I will try to growing bananas 🍌 until will had fruits. Normal my bananas in Philippines farm. Its had 3 inches hight had already fruits. Its take around 6 month from planting seeds. But its take 3 month if already grow from 3 inches. I try it yo grow in my green house. I already had 🥑 abocado plants growing it from seeds. Now its healthy inside green house.
ive noticed banana plants hate self watering pots. I have a Veranda Banana tree I potted a week and a half ago watered it once and not since and its still reading wet on my water meter. I may take off the self watering saucer from the pot
Banna plants are my favorite plant as well. My question is that my plants leave look week to me. Best way to describe is they wrinkle to me. They are still green but they also don’t feel study to me. Hi. If they are weak it's usually a sign that the plant is not getting enough light. Make sure it gets plenty of light and warm temperature.

Wow great job growing bananas an guava ,i am from the tropics so i grow bananas,plantain, an figs all the same plant ,as a rule 1plant an 1 sucker together if more the fruits gets smaller ,it does harm to transplant some of the suckers if alot comes up
I took my "pups" when then had like 5 leafs, they have their own roots so no problem to plant in their own pots. My banana is online like 1 year old, growing in greenhouse and now on wintertime i got some led lights in my garage :P
Have you ever got it to flower? I know some growers have done it in here in Sweden but i think it took a couple of years.. I have just gotten two Musa Tropicana, will grow under 200 w led now in the beginning, maybe i will get some more later. I will have it in my greenhouse next summer, short period here in Sweden though :D

Can't figure out the watering schedule on a new propagation. Leaves are turning yellow and crisping up from over watering or " transplant shock" South window morning/ early afternoon sunlight looks like its not enough
I highly recommend getting a long-probe moisture meter. Otherwise you are always guessing. The XLUX 40cm does a pretty good job and only costs $15.

Did you ever get your banana plant to flower indoors? I currently grow mine mostly outside all summer (except for hard winds or overly hot days) and will be using a grow light this winter for the first time. (Plant is 3 years old) Really hoping for some bananas 😁 🍌🍌

True, but depending on the variety of banana, could be anywhere from 35-60 leaves before you get a flower. I’m assuming you have a dwarf cavendish. 40-60 leaves. I’ve been growing in Canada for over a decade as a hobby. 4 years in a row I’ve gotten bananas. Just bring it outside, and plant in a bigger pot in late may. I’m sure you have a similar climate in Norway. The only problem is the growing season is too short. It’s still nice when you get a flower. And you never have to go back to the nursery. With all the puppies shooting off

Just make sure it's glacial rock dust. Get the seller to confirm this by email. Else you are likely to end up with mining waste that contains a lot of nasty stuff.
what specific variety is this? i would really like one that makes pups to propogate a few, since the most common ones (ensete ventricosum) just flower and die and dont make pups or seeds or any other means of propogation

You should transplant those pups :) without worries, it's not damaging the main corm if you remove children with a knife, and you get one new plant from each of those after approximatelly 21 days, when banana accepts the new environment :)
