The Who were scheduled as the second to last act (before Jefferson Airplane) to play on Saturday, August 16th. When they actually started playing it was already Sunday morning around 5:00 am. They played their exceptional "Tommy" album, a Rock Opera dealing with the struggle of a deaf, dumb and blind boy who later finds a cure and gains stardom with his messianic movement. The finale of this performance took place during sunrise which occurred at 6:05 am.
Personnel:
John Entwistle - bass, vocals
Roger Daltrey - vocals
Keith Moon - drums
Pete Townshend - guitar, vocals
The Abbie Hoffman Incident was an incident that happened during The Who's set right after the song "Pinball Wizard." Abbie Hoffman was able to get on stage and grab a microphone while Pete Townshend tuned his guitar. He said: "I think this is a pile of shit! While John Sinclair rots in prison..." Hoffman was protesting against the imprisonment of John Sinclair (leader of the White Panther Party and manager of the left-wing hard-rock band MC5) who had been convicted and sentenced to nine years of prison because of marijuana possession. Townshend, angry that someone took the stage, yelled: "Fuck off! Fuck off my fucking stage!" allegedly hit him with his guitar, sending him off stage again. Townshend then added: "I can dig it!"; And after the song "Do You Think It's Alright?": "The next fuckin' person that walks across this stage is gonna get fuckin' killed! Alright? [crowd cheers] You can laugh, but I mean it!" No one ran on stage for the remainder of the performance.
I am currently watching The Who performing at Woodstock 1969,they would have to the most outstanding act so far I cannot wait to see Carlos Santana in action, the reason I decided to play the complete concert is that I will be turning 71 years old next Saturday and thought I would give myself an early birthday present.😊

Happy Birthday, enjoy it !
This was one of the better bands that played at Woodstock. The conditions for the musicians and the concert goers sucked royally. I was there - up 3 days, wet, hungry, tired, but rocked none the less. I'm glad to say I was part of the Woodstock Generation. There will never be anything nearly as close to this concert - ever again.
a lot of fuck as well, i guess...i mean you got entangled, mixed, triangled......is that you re proud of?
This was "IT" the best free concert that showed the world that peace, love, unity, responsibility and music can come together w/o the police, w/o the military, w/o knowing that this event would transcend history!
these 3 days are a big part of rock history. The who at their best, Hendrick plays the National anthem, Crosby Stills Nash and Young. This is an incredible event.
yea but we all got by, no worries !!
I was only 8 at the time and my Mom would not let me go,. But my Sister did...
Sun was coming up the sky was pink I was sitting there a mass of chills best time of my life . Got there on a Thursday and left after Hendrix on a Monday .I’m 70 now it’s May 23 2023 loved the Who it’s the reason I was there! Love all kinds of music 🎶 Rush fan for life and Gentle Giant . Peace to my brothers and sisters who were there in that amazing time ✌️☮️❤️🌹🥰
For all those Zep fans out there, (which I'm one) give 'Live at Leeds' a listen. For energy and raw power, there's nothing that compares to The Who live in concert back in the day.
I'm a huge fan of zeppelin and zeppelin bootlegs, but I will admit that my favourite concert bootleg ever is The Who at Fillmore East, May 6th 1968. It's the only soundboard recording of the who from that era (except for some BBC sessions and the Rock and roll circus), but Its a great listen! It showcases the who right when they're on the thin border between their regular rock & roll/pop inspired numbers of the early 60's and the free-form, power-driven playing style that they picked up with Tommy in 1969 and continued to play with throughout their career. I admit that If I were to choose a band I liked better, I'd still pick zeppelin, but I still have yet to see a concert that they did that matches the energy that you hear on the fillmore east bootleg (though "Blueberry Hill" and several of the 1969 fillmore west tapes such as "dancing avocado" do come pretty close).
Great performace by the Who.
Magic bus👍✌
The Who L@L is arguably the best LIVE 'hard' rock album of all time !
@@jimpalmer792 Who’s arguing?
The Who were the best live band in the world by this point in their career.
nowhere near led zeppelin
Clapton and Page were “better” guitarists than Townshend I guess but Moon was better than Bonham and Baker put together and Thunderfingers took a back seat to nobody. Townshend is arguably the best songwriter rock has seen and that includes Lennon/McCartney.
From a strictly musical standpoint Cream and Led Zep may have a little better, ( Page and Clapton being top 10 all time guitarists) but neither could match the Who's showmanship and energy.

Ladies and gentlemen:The Who!
Great music jam to work all night to
As a life-long Who fan, I never thought I would *see* this material, short of what's on The Kids Are Alright. Thank you from the bottom of my soul for posting this.
Awesome material. With the you Tube I have seen and heard so much I never though existed. Ah, life is good!
Right on! There's at least ONE concert in here that I was at: The Who>>1979 Pontiac Silverdome...December 8.
Really! Who needs to spend $$ on CD's & DVD's that get all marked up after rarely PLAYING them. THOSE products are what is a load of SHIT!--as Abbie said...a force of energized-protest whom I idolized during my rebellious teens.
THIS MELTED MY HEADPHONES...THE WHO \,,,/ \,,,/ !
You had to be there to understand the power of The Who. They were really loud! Pure Rock& Roll! Missed Woodstock but saw them most of the other tours. They were all something. They were my favorite band and still are.
Lucky! Which tours did you see? What was your favourite?
ONE OF THE MANY GREAT SETS THEY DID ,THEY WERE UNTOUCHABLE FOR 6 OR 7 YEARS THE BEST LIVE BAND ON THE PLANET
I wholeheartedly agree with that 🤙🎸
First concert i ever attended, in 1972 Houston Texas. Ruined me. Nobody after that could hold a candle to The Who in concert.
They were the best live band ever!🎸🎶🎵
Saw them outside in a ballpark.Sound just blew over your head to outside the stadium.
Hahahahahaaaaa! Oh, h*ll yeah!!! Omg, I saw them before that time, and after but I was there *for these 7 yrs* too, omg! *In the Stratosphere with Power, Beauty, and Transcendence!*
(also had some seriously
wonder filled '79 gigs!)
The Who put in arguably the greatest performance at Woodstock. Great band!
Townsend, pure genius
the original Who on an off night is better than 90% of any live band footage you're going to come across - what a band!
This is true
AMEN!!! I LOVE THIS BAND‼️❤️ Sincerely Darlene an American Girl who has a thing for drummers ❤️❤️❤️
I am glad to finally see the footage and listen to the bootlegs of the whole show.
After hearing for years "The Who bombed at Woodstock" it is nice to see the footage and decide for myself.
I suspect a lot of concert goers slept through the set and talked up how bad it was as a "sour grapes" method of convincing themselves they hadn't missed much.
Someone once slammed Daltry for being off key on a high note. Daltey replied "I may have been off key, but I HIT a note." Hit it ?? He slammed it.
@@missdarlene7 I saw them in 75...Keith started with a 6 in diameter scabbard packed full of drumsticks...2 hours and 45 minutes later IT WAS EMPTY!!!! PIECES OF SPLINTERED DRUMSTICKS LITTERED THAT STAGE!!!...never seen ANYBODY ELSE COME EVEN CLOSE TO THAT ENERGY!!!!
For energy and passion they’re unmatched.
The Who in its original form was simply a beast of a rock n roll musical machine. The entire band was on a different level of sonics as well as performance which is why they needed to be at Woodstock. The interactions are sometimes nuanced and at others very bold faced. My favorite thing about this footage is witnessing the deep rhythmic connection between Moonie and Townsend which was beyond intense.
I saw everyone- Hendrix, Stones, Zep, Dylan, Moodies, Harrison & on. Then I saw The Who.
@@patmccormick9972 That's.🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡
bullshit
What often gets lost in discussing The Who, are the incredible harmonics that John Entwhistle brought to the sound of their live performances. It’s nothing short of incredible.
agreed. a recording band has to figure out how to play their stuff live- and Tommy has to be one of the most challenging albums to play live- ever. Entwhistle fills all the holes Pete and Keith leave. Plus that tone is incredible, proabably my favorite live bass tone.
100% 👍🙏👊
Greatest bass player! John Entwhistle! McCartney very good! Jack Bruce.
Townsend not so bad himself I love the overture for Tommy live and studio his guitar work was phenomenal
@@markwilliams5606 Agree.
Love Entwhistle,Jack Bruce and Justin Chancellor.
Peace
Great performance. Pete played so hard at this show, his fingers bled. At 27:50, as Pete throws his guitar into the crowd, you can see the sun rise behind the set. As John Entwistle observed, "it was as if God was our lighting man."
and then the airplane played 'morning maniac music;..lol
Pete once said the show didn't really get going for him until he lost a fingernail. Seen lots of clips of him where you can see blood spatters on his white coveralls. There's no way to cautiously do those windmills.
@@darwinsaye Ouch. He told Letterman about the time he was playing a Strat on stage, did a windmill and neatly impaled his right hand on the whammy bar. Ouch again.
Perfectly said Alex!
and the roadie running into the front of the audience to retrieve it !
I saw them 1970, in Tokyo Yamaha Hall through the Michael Wodlley' s film "Woodstock". I was deeply impessed and it remains in my mind as a beautiful miracle.
The musical chemistry and interaction between Keith and Pete a perfect melding , always keeping an eye on each other looking for nods and signals Daltry shoved to the front Entwistle off to the side instinctivly knowing much more than just what to do
Roger Daltrey is the definition of a Rock N' Roll singer.
and Townshend the definition of a guitar hero
The Who were the definition of a Rock N Roll band..
Like driving 100 ton tank with wheels of steel? Lee Brillauex?
Rock God.
and John Entwistle the definition of an amazing Bass player. And can't forget good old Keith Moon, AKA the definition of a absoloutley Bonkers Drummer.
The way they increase tempo during "Listening to You" - what sensitive subtleness in the midst of this raw energy!
Keith Moon......my God what a drummer....
The ultimate rock n roll band. DEFINITION.
Technical comment for guitarists and specialists: it is very interesting today to see how the great sound of the Woodstock guitars in 1969 was mainly produced by single coil pickups, whether they were Gibson P90s (The Who, Santana, The Grease Band with Joe Cocker, Mountain, Canned Heat, etc) or Fender (Jimi Hendrix Gipsy Sun and Rainbows) or Rickenbacker (Credence Clearwater Revival, etc)... Note: humbucker pickups had already been invented by Seth Lover in 1955 and only the Gibson ES of Ten Years After and Jefferson Airplane they had...
The who, number 1 in my book, I hardly go to movies, but I'd love to see this on a big screen with a huge audience. Love the huge fringe vest, and when he swings the microphone it's just rock magic. When townsend jumps, kicks his own butt!, they are just the meaning of huge entertainment, best band ever!! Even with eyes shut, the sounds are tsunami power.
The bass solos in my generation. Just brilliant
Entwistle was brilliant
The great Band the best live show
❤❤❤❤One of the best bands of the sixties - I love them forever !❤❤❤❤
Love what Townshend says to Hoffman, love it!!!🙂🙂
Yeah, I can dig it!
"Won't Get Fooled Again" - the whole album is timeless....still gets me to this day.....😋
Best album ever. Song after song culminating with DGFA. Nothing better …… ever.
My gosh, what a sound. After over 30 years of listening to this clip, I never get tired of it.
We can never get tired of listening to THE WHO greatest rock band ever ever
Still GREAT""""
seriously one of the coolest bands ever. John, Pete and Keith some of the very best players of their respective instrument, Roger the perfect frontman for the band, paved the way for someone like Bon Scott of ACDC with his energy on stage. Just some epic rockers. Would’ve been epic to watch em live during this time.
Pete will always be the chord master !
Despite their youth, it must have been exhausting to go on at 5:00 in the morning, a nine hour delay from their scheduled start time. Yet, despite that and other trying circumstances, they go out their and still perform like a beast. Just a legendary performance by a legendary band.
British best.
Pete Townshend to Abby Hoffman: “F- off my f- ing stage!” LMAO! 😆😂🤣
When I got my first house, my neighbor across the street and I used to say that to each other all the time.. :)
The greatest minutes of Rock and Roll history
Right up there.
Just got shivers down my spine when summertime blues kicked in
This era 69-72 was the absolute best - white jumpsuit SG Special....
yes
WHEN THERE WERE ROCK GODS
This band played at Monterey,Woodstock, and the Isle of White,in a short period of time...and stormed it.Hendrix did too. Both incredible, powerful and unique...
The best live band ever!! The Mighty Who
So many people say that Led Zeppelin is the most metal band before Sabbath, but you watch this performance and listen to live at leeds and you tell the who aren’t the heaviest band of their day
I agree Brother live at Leeds that’s where heavy metal had its start 👍👍👍👍👍
So true
21st Century Schizoid Man is the heaviest song of the 60s and rivals anything by metal bands.
Probably the best live band ever pretty easily! The mighty power of Hiwatt amps, Gibson SGs and the raw energy of Pete, Keith, Roger and yes even the wild bass playing of John!! What a great piece of footage this was, thank you, thank you, thank you!!!
Never to be seen again, ever:.
It's wild to think that they were all only in their mid-twenties at this point, and already a veteran live band.
Well, there was the MC5 and Iggy & the Stooges as far as best live bands.....
Can watch Keith Moon drum all day
On my Woodstock DVD their performance was the one I replayed the most BY FAR!!!! JUST AWESOME STILL TODAY!!!💯💯💯👍👍👍
What's amazing to me is that Pete and Roger can still put on a super long show that leaves people walking out happily dazed and confused! I saw the orchestra tour at a baseball park in 2019 and it was awesome. YES I would love to have seen the original in person but I saw four post John shows that still blew everyone's minds.
From a cool Mod band to the absolute best band to experience ever. What a journey. RIP Keith and John
If you watch the film, rock in 1969 was VISIBLY a frightening force. Not passe like it is today or even 2002.
It really was a Sunday morning church service with The Who- mesmerizing stuff. Wicked backing vocals by John and Pete- such a team unit. Ladies and gentleman…… The Who…..
27:15...the chord heard around the world! It shattered and a million bands formed around the world.
I always joke that's the very moment the word *KERRRRAAAANG!* entered the English language..
Naturally, during the most iconic bass solo (in My Generation) in rock history, the camera is focused on Pete. And, sadly, not much changed in the 30+ years after that, as a long dreary parade of cameramen, directors, and editors refused to believe that the incredible sound they were hearing wasn't coming from Pete's guitar.
The “final” show from Toronto...1984?...does a better job with on Entwhistle.
John was overlooked on the camera so we miss the technique

How special to be at Woodstock ! Hot band , singers , musicians , and men !! A new sound for sure !
I saw the first Who show after Entwistle's death at the Hollywood Bowl. They had canceled the original show for a couple days to deal with it. Pete and Roger
walked out and Pete walked over and gave Roger a hug, to the crowd's cheering. Pete said something like, "Sorry for the cancelled show, but we had a problem with our bass player. Typical." So brusque and understated. So British.
John died with a hooker in his room..So John...lol
So did I. Madison Square Garden, August 1, 2002
Actually, Daltrey said that the sunrise during See Me, Feel Me was one of the greatest moments of his entire career. It happened in conjunction with that exact lyrical moment in which the sun coming up was almost meant to happen at that particular time. Perhaps the performance as a whole was disappointing to them, but expectations were high, there were many distractions (which they rode out very well considering the circumstances surrounding the woeful stage area), the sound system sucked, the scheduling was awry, and there were too many psychotropics/psychedelics for their liking. Daltrey was sober the entire time and (for that matter) throughout his entire career as well due to a realization that, if he wanted to preserve his voice for longevity and maintain balance within the group in which there was so much craziness, he would have to remain straight and clear-headed. It obviously has worked for him as he sounds phenomenal to this day for his age.
A totally Whogasmic experience!
I thought he had been spiked with LSD
The other three had
The fruit cocktail had acid in backstage ,I thought it was just Roger who got spiked ,where did you read hear about the others ?
They say that they didn't care for their performance. That's because they want it to be perfect. But when I first saw this footage like 45 years ago damn am old. I loved every second of it. THE WHO IS THE GREATEST ROCK BAND EVER EVER EVER
I’m his book, Pete said John and Keith were totally tripping on acid. The water in the back stage tent was laced with acid. Pete said he was mildly tripping. Interesting to learn about Roger. Pete doesn’t talk about Roger much in his book, except to say he wasn’t much fun and was just into getting laid. It’s a great book BTW.
We just saw them here in Cincinnati. First time they played since that faithful night, December 3rd, 1979. It was pretty emotional for my wife and I. It was a great time. And Roger's voice was really on!
Between 2 virtuosos, sits the personification of chaos. Rising from the fire in the middle, a golden god. They were called...the Who.
Anyone trying to push the "Pete was not a good guitarist" mantra needs to listen to the first couple of minutes of this. He was an amazing over all guitarist, switching from grungy rhythm to Clapton like leads effortlessly.
PETE IS AWESOME
Yes he was. Plus stage presence.
Who on earth says Pete is not a good guitarist there...?!?!
@@maxmeister5064 I have seen that crap asserted on other Who UA-cam clips. It is of course garbage.
I agree. Just listen to overture on studio and live at Leeds(one of my favorite by them) amazing how they can play their redition of Thomas straight through)
my fav Woodstock performance, early morning w/ The Who!!!
As far as I am concerned, the Who's set was the very best part of Woodstock. I would have given my right arm to have seen and heard it with my own eyes...brown acid or not! 👍🔥
I did see and hear as I was in that get together. Who was fabulous, as was Joe Cocker, Ten Years After and Santana with Soul Sacrifice.
Alvin Lee brought down the mud with I’m Goin’ Home ( by helicopter ) and Cocker had A Little Help From His Friends. Peace, my friends.

With all due Respect, The Who was a legendary awesome band but amateurs when compared to the greatest band of all time ...Led Zeppelin!
@@harrythomas420 There's a douche like you on every message board. The Who were never accused of plagiarism. Zep lifted half their riffs from others.

Unbelievable quality and musicianship fir live and the time!!!!! What energy !
I could never understand why Townshend hated Woodstock. This has been one of my favorite boots for Gods sake. The energy just transcends music theory.
"The Greatest Live Rock Band of All Time" THE WHO. I will love them till I die!
the storm? the venue? the hippies?
When Pete says he hated Woodstock, I always assumed he thought The Who played poorly. My mistake.
Jim Kennelly I always thought he hated the event, not so much the band's set. Because they played very well for that show.
same here Jim!
I read somewhere that there was almost no food or water when they arrived and their set got pushed way back beyond scheduled start time. They were supposed to go on at some typical rock star time like 11:00pm and didn't play until something like 2:00am. None of which I believe as fact, it's just a rough of the story I remember from way back when. One thing is obvious: they rose above it all and played the FUCK out of their set.
That Gibson SG and that crazy drummer...Wow!
Don’t forget the Hiwatts!
The original and the best. Watching this again for the first time in many years I can see clearly the seeds of the punk rock movement a decade or so later. The raw, rude power of them, esp Townsend and Moon. Unbelievable stuff. They make practically every other band during and after them seem so… polite…

@@theoppiesghost It's iconic.
Thanks for posting this. I never tire of listening/watching it. Sure miss the Ox on bass. Maybe Woodstock was hell to attend due to the conditions but I'm betting not one person regrets being a part of history decades later.
It wasn't hell to attend. Most of the people there were age 15-25, an age where you don't need the creature comforts so much. Definitely a case of mind over matter -- as you know, there was a wonderful feeling there.
Pete Townshend's guitar sounds pretty wicked and beautiful at the same time.

Always get a little emotional & nostalgic anytime I hear Pete Townshend play the "Naked Eye" instrumental outro towards the end of a live show. That 3 chord combination, simple as it is, seems to strike a chord (no pun intended) with me and always feel a little emotional/reflect on the past (especially the recent past 3-4 years ago).
Yeah, that, those chords!
I remember first hearing it during the My Generation instrumental section of Tommy Filmore East '69. Blown away seeing Tommy live, and then *this* shows up.
I'm like *what is THAT!???!!!* lol
A (then) Mesmerizing Mystery!

One things I have always admired about The Who. You can understand everything they sing. Pete took the time to compose the lyrics, he and Roger did them justice.
While I respect what Led Zep did, most of the time I have no idea what the hell the lyrics are and what they mean………
Perhaps they figured their audience would be so stoned it wouldn’t matter.
The most awesome live band in history.
