I think it was at the start of this summer that I watched you on your way to Hawaii and first gained an interest in sailing. Now I'm taking an RYA course & enjoying it very much. I've also watched many, many more sailing videos, but this one is the best. It doesn't just teach us about sailing, or entertain, it helps us understand the summer we're in.
I hear a vestigial New Jersey accent when you say “iced tea” that might be traceable to your summers on Barnegat Bay (something we have in common). You’ve developed a distinctive sort of poetry with your video logs. The imagery, the soliloquy, the music, and the cadence remind me of my favorite poems. By sailing I have tried to reach the summers of my youth. Group of sea scout friends sailing around the Baltic and so on. How miserably have I failed! I have an old sailboat but no friends to sail with. The boat is floating in a guest harbor 100 nautical miles away, I am at home trying to rest. It is summer. Indeed, it is heat wave here in Finland. Daily temperatures between 35 and 30 decrees centigrade, 5 - 10 degrees over the average. I feel so sad because I cannot get the joy as earlier in my life. Sailing is just dragging the wake. Sailing upwind where ever I decide to sail to. And I am not old. At least, I am fifty, I should not be one waiting for the (!) death. To be honest, I did not expected to have a luxury yacht. On the other hand, a dinghy was not enough. I am not interested in racing and 50 miles sailed with a beach toy was just too much. The boat could not stand such usage and I was too tired for anything but get home and to bed. I am sorry to say, sailing along the summer dreams is top notch elite thing. The most of us cannot afford much more than a rowing boat. The most have to work so that that the elite can get their 35 ft yachts. Philosophy of sailing is nothing but richplaining. And I am as guilty as Christian Williams, although my yacht is nearly 60 years old, only 28 ft and suitable only for coastal cruising, which on the other hand, is mot much more than floating a piece of bark in a bucket here on the Baltic. Still, the Estonia sank close to my sailing waters during condition hardly to be called a storm (over 25 m/s). Even I have sailed in more terrible conditions - which I only recently understood. For most of the people around the world the only way to get to the open ocean is to work on a freighter. There you are, painting the deck... Still, in my home country and along its coast line, before the this time of compulsory military service, a young man did not reach his adulthood before sailing at least a couple of years onboard an ocean going ship. Carrying wood around the Baltic was just playing in dishwater. And yes, sailing a dinghy on one's home bay is quite different from hitting a low pressure on the North Atlantic, which, on the other hand, I have experienced only twice. Now, get back to your work and do something useful! Like... sail!
After one minute there are two boys and a dog in a sailboat. Is it a Jolly Scott? I had a Jolly Scott when I was a child around 1970. This boat looks exactly the same.

It is the one single place where I can be free. It is the only place where I feel sane. It grounds me. Reminds me of my insignificance. Sailing shows me in every instant how minor I am and how important it is for me to pay attention to what nature is saying. If sailing doesn't humble you, then honestly I don't know what will.
This is the antidote I needed to endless Biden vs Trump videos. So many wonderful turns of phrase. In particular, love the way you liken the dead of August and our Covid pause to that moment at slack tide in an anchorage where boats point every which way, or simply lying a-hull on the open water.
Hi Christian, I recently viewed the Catamaran race footage you posted. I am a new E27 owner and while sharing the joy with a friend last night we motored into the basin in LA Harbor where the "Chowder Barge" is located and saw many Large Catamarans and Trimarans that are easily from the same era as your race. Thought you would like to know about them. You don't know it but you are my instructor and hero and thanks to you I solo sailed to Two Harbors a few weeks ago and it was one of the most glorious adventures of my life. Neptune gave me a hall pass and I have to remind myself that my first run was as good as it gets and not to expect it will be so the next time. If you ever think of adopting a boy I know of a good condition 52 year old who travels well and enjoys everything from Albion to Zoroaster. All the best to you and thank you for the instruction and inspiration. Keep a weather eye out for "Roxanne". She is an old gal but she still has all her teeth.

I can’t remember which boat you went to Hawaii in, but it was the one which you had pedestal mounting problems leaving. I noticed some movement in this video of the pedestal moving around some. Is it getting loose again? I can’t tell if it’s attached to the wheel mount or not, just thought I’d put in my 2 cents. Love your channel and books. You need another passage somewhere….
