    I had a Sienna with all wheel drive and it was a total nightmare. First of all you get terrible gas milage. On the highway the best I would get was about 17 m.p.g.. I had no spare tire because the space where the spare tire would go was taken up by components of the AWD system. This meant you had to use run flat tires which are the absolute worst. They’re expensive, ride harder, and very few manufacturers make them. The other thing is if you get a flat you’re supposed to replace them, not repair them, although some tire shops will fix them. The other thing about the AWD system is that all the tires must be in the same state of wear. Lets say your tires are about half way through their service life and you get a sidewall cut, which isn’t repairable, you have to buy all new tires because if you don’t the AWD system can be damaged. I can only imagine what that will cost to fix. In addition run flat tires wear poorly. You would be lucky to get over 30,000 miles from a set. I now have a 2020 Sienna with front wheel drive only and it’s a great van. I get 24 m.p.g. on the highway and it rides great and has more power than previous Siennas. So unless you live in the snow belt stay away from AWD.

    3rd row SUV'S will never beat the comfort of a minivan. You can fit all 7 adults in a minivan whereas the 3rd row in a SUV only children can fit comfortably.

    • @joelrepass2379
      @joelrepass2379 4 роки тому +12

      The Durango and Atlas can both fit adults comfortably in the 3rd row but most people won’t be buying those so I would have to agree. The Sienna is dated because Toyota knows the market is going and their minivan sales are dropping so they see no reason to refresh it and are focusing on SUVs like other companies.

    I’m still very happy with my 15 years old 291K miles Toyota Sienna that is still runs flawlessly on its original engine, transmission, iced cold AC, suspension, paint, electrical windows, fuel pump. The vehicle never been towed in its 15 years of service and spent almost 360 days a year driving in city traffic with a lot of stop and go. Very good ride compare to sedans and SUVs. Toyota is number one in reliability, longevity, low cost of maintenance and resale value.

    In 2015 my wife wanted a Sienna mostly for road trips now that we’re retired. While I wasn’t all that excited about it at the time a smart husband let’s the wife pick the car she wants with, perhaps, a little guidance. I must admit I’m am extremely impressed with it. It’s so good in so many ways. Ride comfort, handling, suspension, transmission, engine performance and above all comfort and room. And the very small turning radius is truly amazing. It even looks good. But most importantly she loves it and so do I.

      @@puny5417No, the people are weird. There's nothing wrong with the looks of most minivans. The name and idea of a minivan became unpopular for pretty much no reason and for some reason certain people still feel that way. Maybe just people that are uncomfortable with themselves or care too much about being seen in something that they hear might be unpopular? Idk. This all goes for wagons, too but I think it was 90's styling that ruined their reputation, but they've been badass ever since. We need cool wagons back in the U.S. but Americans won't buy them for reasons mentioned above.

It hauls peoples and stuffs...just about everything including the kitchen sink. It rides like a dream on the highway at cruising speed and it has enough pick up to meet my need. Thank you! AWD is best used off road, it doesn’t help at all for the 2 biggest issues in snow... breaking distance and not sliding off the road. We had a snowstorm yesterday here in Colorado and most of all the cars that slid off the road were AWD. AWD will help a little with traction but nowhere near as much as a good set of snow tires and hardly anyone with AWD gets them. There is also a gas mileage and maintenance cost penalty as well as the initial cost of AWD, both the rear differential and transfer case oils need changing every 30K miles at around $100 for each. Get FWD an extra set of wheels and snow tires and keep a set of chains with you in winter especially in the mountains where they are required and you will never have a need for AWD. Now with off-roading the main issue is traction so AWD makes sense there, allthough off road tires make a big difference too. The Sienna does not have the ground clearance for off-roading but there lift kits available that if installed would then put the AWD version to some good use.

    • @ElijahsAba

      oil is 20 bucks for both tops change it yourself. 30k is extreme 60k is plenty. wait till you do a 0-60 in 7 seconds pulling out in front of someone in the rain and tell me you wont love the AWD to 23mpg diffrence. The fwd just sits and burns the tires off. LOL

    • @boldyo
      @boldyo 4 роки тому +1

      @@TimZ007 Yes, AWD will allow you to accelerate faster but without the proper tires(which most with AWD do not get) take much longer to stop and longer even with the proper tires in bad conditions, causing many accidents and explains all the AWD vehicles crashing and sliding off the road. This behavior just causes pain and misery for everyone else on the road and bad karma for yourself.

      They’re not that hard to remove, but they’re also like 60 pounds each and you have to pull them straight up while pulling a lever on the back of the seat. It’s easy to do if you’ve had some practice, but it’ll frustrate the hell out of parents who are just doing it the one time they have to move something that won’t quite fit behind the second row.

    The Sienna is the best minivan. It does everything better than an SUV except go off road. AWD is definitely better. You are right about AWD not helping you brake or avoid a slide. That is not the point. Where I live, there are steep hills. AWD gets you up those hills that would normally paralyze FWD cars in the snow. That is where it is useful. AWD just gets you home while others are stuck! I couldn't care less about dated styling - that is for the fashion conscious with fragile egos. Get real. This is a car. It is a tool to get a job done RELIABLY. If you want styling, go buy a dress, jewelry, or a new suit.

Everything about Sienna inside and outside kinda gave the impression that the Sienna was the unwanted child in the Toyota designers line-up and there was no real design language but more like... there was no more design budget left because Toyota spent it all on their cars and suv's so when it came to this van, they told the designers to just jot something down during their lunch break and production will make it work lol. Honestly the only thing this Toyota has going for it is the AWD. Otherwise you're right, design wise it's definitely lagging behind the competition at this point.

It's difficult to not stay hard all day just having that thing in the driveway.

      Tactical Priority Sienna platform was designed to accommodate an AWD drivetrain, which removes space for 2nd row stow-and-go. Regardless, I’ll take Toyota’s 300k-mile overtrain reliability over Chrysler’s 2nd row stow-and-go.

    Manufacturers have tried to convince us that gas mileage is the most important thing in the world because the government is on them to sell high gas mileage cars. Let us get back to reality, which is that the most important feature of any car is SAFETY. Go with the AWD version. See that it drives better in the rain, besides snow/ice.

  • @dunphyjp

    Awd is not necessary at all for on road driving in winter, it’s more effective and cheaper to buy a second set of dedicated winter tires... doing so allows for better grip, acceleration AND braking... something that awd by itself does not. Also most of the awd lack rear differentials and rely on braking to act as a differential, which can work but system response is always lacking a constant awd system (a la Subaru) or performance awd like Audi A4 and up (the A3 works on a fwd based one from the golf R rather than at this point solely Audi rwd bias awd)

      Side note... I haven’t had an AWD car since 2003 (it was a WRX wagon manual). I’ve done with two wheel drive and differentials with winter tires since 2007 with my 2007 R56 MINI Cooper S with mechanical LSD (subsequent years got an E-diff over mechanical unit), my 2013 FRS manual, and now my 2019 Honda Civic Type R. And to this day I still have no issues with winter driving. Granted I’m from Pa around philly so our average snow fall is basically 5-8 days a year. Any Canadians want to jump in here?

    Minivan owners, how often, if ever, have you had the need to remove the 2nd row seats? Is stow n go convenient, most definitely! But not at the sacrifice of a comfortable seat. People sit in the seats way more than you'll ever need to remove the seats for cargo. I'd rather have more comfortable seats than have stow n go.

      I have a Honda Odyssey and have removed the 2nd row countless times to haul things to the dump. My dad and I once fit a 600-lb root ball from a pine tree in there. We've also hauled about 1,300 lbs of stone pavers. He's always owned trucks and is now a huge minivan fan :) But with four kids, we have the 2nd row in at all other times.

    If you don’t need to tow more than 3000 lbs or so, nothing beats a minivan for combination of people & cargo space, fuel mileage, handling, cost of tires. A tow package is cheap, & a trailer can carry the occasional item too tall or bulky to fit in the van. Friends have a Jag & 2 BMW’s -& a Chrysler Town & Country. Whenever they go on a road trip, they use the T&C.

      So I live in snow country and the cars that go off the road during ice and snow storms are 4 wheel all wheel. drive cars? Why you may ask?? Well it's because 4 wheel drive does not actually help you hold the road, it's the tires that do that and all the folks with all wheel drive forget the reality and go to fast, and then end up off the road. AWD and four WD help with traction when starting and going though snow at low speeds but at speed it's tires that hold the road.

      @@jdansie I extrapolate from all recent developments that Toyota will release a Hybrid Sienna . To date , I have seen NO actual press reports on the subject which makes sense as all recent marketing hype has been focused around the new Highlander and RAV4 variations. Although the press previews for the Highlander Hybrid occurred simultaneously with the non- Hybrid, there is a delay of several months before the Hybrid reaches dealerships. As was the case with the RAV4 Hybrid, I expect back orders and delays as the public realizes what a massive leap forward the new Highlander Hybrid represents. My personal view is that the next Sienna SHOULD be Hybrid only as it makes perfect sense in the purely practical Minivan segment. An AWD, Hybrid Sienna getting 35+ mpg would be the pinnacle of rational family transportation. Regardless of what I think, the whole world will find out Toyota's plans in 2020. ;)

    If you need space for people and stuff, absolutely the minivan trumps the crossovers and even most bigger SUV's. The only advantage the larger truck based SUV's have is in trailer towing capability but beyond that, there's no comparison in my experience. One thing I've been very disappointed with Toyota is how far they seem to be lagging behind everyone else in connectivity technology. Most of their line hasn't had Apple CarPlay or Android Auto even though everyone else seems to have had it for a number of years now. You mentioned the 2020 Sienna now has Apple CarPlay but no mention of Android Auto. I've noted that on some of their other current models. Personally, I have never understood why so much priority has been given to Apple support when the vast majority of the folks I know don't use Apple. Oh well. One other minor correction. The transmission on the Sienna, if it's still like the Toyota products I've had experience with, including my 2013 Rav4, doesn't have a true "manual" mode. When placed in "sport" mode, the "D" on the display is replaced with some gear number below the available top gear of the transmission. In my 2013 Rav4 with 6 speed tranny, it's "4." I can "upshift or downshift" from that point if I want but at that point, the highest gear the transmission will go to is the displayed gear, but the transmission is still a fully automatic transmission. All you've done is limit the highest gear the transmission will upshift to but it will still upshift and downshift automatically as it sees fit in accordance with what you ask it to do.
