DHH's ability to rant/mind dump non stop is impressive. You guys barely got any words in the first hour! I appreciate his passion and knowledge. Still would have been nice if he listened more and engaged with his hosts more.
That was awesome, DHH is an awesome presenter, this is my first time watching your podcast... I had no idea you made the coffee TUI, I thought that was incredible
@@StingSting844 don't get me wrong I find what hes saying very interesting it was just making me laugh how long he was able to talk without stopping, and seeing the hosts trying to sneak in a few words here and there but being unable to 🤣🤣🤣
Seeing DHH going through that journey after so long in the industry is sooo funny and relatable. I've been using Neovim for a few years now and have just finished the first few weeks of using a ZSA Voyager as my daily driver keyboard and oh my god. I didn't realise there were so many improvements that I could make to my workflow and my setup!
You know, he actually reminds me a lot about Steve. Steve would have LOVED his take. It’s why he created Apple in the first place. DHH is getting better and better.
Even though I don’t agree with a lot of his choices in general, the man is as real developer one can get. His anti monopolistic views are inspiring and he is funny as hell. Agree with him or not he is interesting af
I had it with Apple when Homebrew was taking HOURS to install and compile Neovim and sql on MacOS Big Sur because my macbook cannot update to Ventura, at least. Installed Linux and never regretted. For my brand design work, I have a MacBook running MacOS Monterey provided by the office which I use for that. For dev work, I use my personal MacBook Pro running Ubuntu
And this, folks, is an example of someone who writes a lot. To speak coherently for a long time you need to write. ;) I’ve heard a lot of interviews with DHH, and he does talk a lot, but I think in this one he couldn’t really hear the hosts well. But it was incredible, one of the best interviews with DHH. Adam: you should pick up Ruby and Rails. ;)
Rails is honestly really nice. It's probably the easiest to use back end web framework in existence. Obviously you need to handle your own html, css, and javascript, but between erb templating, a really easy to use orm (there's a rails command that creates both a database migration script and a skeleton class for your data model), and really easy to use auth, you could set up a basic personal website that includes a blog (not including javascript or css) in a few hours of work as a complete beginner. It helps that ruby is a pretty nice language to work with.
Feeling called out with the "linux neckbeard" talk, but honestly? He's not wrong. Personally, I like that there are different linux distros because on the one hand, I want people like my partner who is entirely non-technical to be able to buy a laptop with linux pre-installed and pre-configured in such a way that the out of the box experience just works, but on the other, I want to be able to buy a laptop with no OS installed (so I'm not paying the windows tax) that I can then shove Arch onto and configure everything I want from scratch and hardly ever even bother launching a GUI at all. My favourite thing about linux is that both of those experiences are possible; my least favourite thing about linux is that neither of those experiences are really complete yet. You can get really close in either direction, but not quite all the way. Personally, I'd like to see a better beginners' experience both in the GUI and the terminal. I wish that when I boot to the console on my framework (I didn't bother installing a desktop manager, so I go directly to the linux console) I could have access to 24 bit colour rather than only 16 colours, and the same fonts (including full unicode support) I use in a GUI terminal emulator. I also wish that literally every config option were accessible via GUI, making the terminal pretty much entirely optional for non-technical users.
The Internet (web) is actually a more modern/futuristic platform for distribution of apps, the app stores are a step back technologically. Both Google and Apple should stop having app stores and instead use the browser to distribute native apps while at the same time allowing to add web apps to the home screen that don't use any native api's. Apple will loose nothing by moving to the browser as a distribution platform they can still charge their 30% the key is to allow native and web-apps to show up under the same search results and allow web apps to be added to the screen.
1:05:46 it is not a contradiction. Wanting and contributing to open source by your own free will is not communism. It would be communism if you were forced to work for free.
Agree with the Neovim Stuff, but Apple Hardware is to good to pass on. It seems like he left Apple because of idealistic business reasons like the 30% Paycut he talked about.
He’s a complicated guy, talks a lot. I disagree with like 75% of the things he says and a lot of the things he believes. But man, sometimes he’s just right. And a lot of the technical stuff I initially didn’t agree with, eventually I do too. I slept on Rails and now I adore it, I hated Hotwire, I’m won around on it. I couldn’t stand Stimulus, now I think a version of it is kind of the perfect alternative to something like Vue/react. The social stuff though? The culture war stuff? Nah man, he just needs to spend less time on twitter.
Hey Mail's onboarding of new users is fundamentally flawed, which is why it is still not as big as the creators would like. Their biggest USP was providing consolidated views of different mails as if it is a newsfeed but that doesn't work when their trial only allows for 7 days. That trial duration is simply not enough to test the platform's full potential, they should've instead done something like free for first 1000 mails received as that's when one can really experience what platform is capable of.
I can’t get enough of DHH talking! It’s astonishing how much he can say yet be extremely deliberate and pointed with his words.

+1
That's exactly what I was thinking of, wasted potential. Because maaan, there is so much great content in this episode!
I scrolled passed this video multiple times because it said DHH and I didn’t see him
Ngl, I confused dax for DHH, so I saw DHH and dax's face on a pod I never heard of and decided. @@Spencerhadley
Put DHH in the thumbnail!

Nope, he's entertaining as hell.

From this day forward DHH shall be known as the king of yapp.
Multi 100 million dollar businesses but yet you can only see the yapping? 😂
I mean... he yaps about really interesting things, so I'm all for it!
Dude is listening to a podcast and complaining about the yapping😂

I rather hear him than Dax lack of assertive tone... Is terrible man... Bro doesn't even know he talks like his wife lol
The title is so accurate. Only DHH talks....😂
DHH! The man with the plan!
I think easily my fav episode. at least the most I've laughed while listening. DHH has such a based take on apple/linux
dhh is far funnier than i expected
great interview.
love DHH, he is more experienced and knowledgeable than most.
Ye, Apple's approach to PWA's is outrageous! I'm very close to making the switch also. Let's go homegrown xD

Hey great episode, one of the best so far. I'll watch it later.
first episode I listened to, could not have chosen a better introduction
Dhh should probably appear more, I with passion hate the current situation the devs are being driven towards
watching dhh talk is like watching stand up comedy. reaally fun to watch
My favorite episode by far

DHH becoming a Linux evangelist… is great. Omakub is great…. Waiting for him to adopt arch… bound to happen. Makes me wanna learn rails lol!
imagine the moment he stops using gnome and gets to rice his environment, he is gonna go wild.
The fact he went with the laziest linux out there runs counter to his point. Still he is a fantastic evangelist.

HELL YEAH TOKYO NIGHT! I use Storm myself, let’s gooo
DHH is spot on with Neovim. 😮
Change the thumbnail, only show DHH to properly represent the show. I'm joking but a little bit too much ranting but still some interesting takes.
David is great at storytelling. 👍
new to this channel. what a cinematic podcast.
Best show ever!
Tokyo Night! Yesss!
Best episode, this was so good !
I have a nvidia card and it just works, i didnt have to touch anything?
Damn, This was fun! I learned a lot.
Peak guest hell yeah
this was so awesome
Yapping starts at 2:36
does it end?
DHH is like the younger Don McMillan. When he gets old he's not going to retire with pigs and potatoes, he's going to become a Comedian.
This was fun 😂. Especially when he's in the flow 😂
Why Linux 28:50
Literally spitting facts.

divided by distros; united by battling with nvidia drivers.
I thought DHH liked Tokyo Night because Tokyo -> Japan -> Ruby.

ahhha! what a hypocrisy; even his home computers are in the (fog) cloud! :)
I’m sorry but someone using Linux fully for 6 months should not talk with this much conviction. Good pod otherwise.
Games. Linux lacks that.
Wait, what? Have you heard of Proton? 😳
@@levifig I have. But I didn't like the experience. Also, some old games which I have CDs and DVDs cannot be played there.
Just stop developing native apps and stick on to the web standards.
