Nice but it doesn't work anymore...well, not without obtaining your own API key. I decided on a different way and it was even more cumbersome than this process.
for offline map, select a place, then there is next the search a three ... select that , scroll to save offline area. crop the area and select download it will stay for 30 days, you can always redownload
Well, You now need to PAY with a credit card to download it: You can no longer simply paste in a Google Maps directions URL to get a GPX file or elevation profile. You have two options: Get your own API Key and enter it into the conversion or profile input form; instructions are below, in the blue box. (This is your best bet if you'll be using this feature a lot.) Run the directions through Google's "My Maps" feature; instructions are below, in the purple box. how simple and how accurate.Merci.
and how to transfer that from basecamp to device?
No longer works without valid API key

I am shocked Garmin does not have its own maps to plan on a PC and transfer
It does. The program is called BaseCamp. Some people prefer to use Google though.
Kelly Fletcher: Garmin does, it is called Basecamp, but it is really cumbersome to use. I despise it.
