  • Lanterne Rouge presents highlights of Stage 7 of the Tour de France 2021 one of the most exciting and drama filled stages in recent Tour de France history, with a mega-break going up the road early with yellow jersey Mathieu van der Poel and Wout van Aert. Controversy between Ineos, Carapaz and Movistar struck again, with Movistar pacing back Carapaz, but did they have a legitimate reason to?

The Movistar team always acts like that, we've seen them do it time and time again. They never care for good sportsmanship. It's no surprise they chased Carapaz again. Kinda makes sense, assuming Mas stands a chance against Carapaz... which he doesn’t! Carapaz treasoned Movistar, went to race in some ramdom criteriums in September -for money- without permission, and then signed with Ineos, again with Movistar not knowing a word of it. Movistar hoped Carapaz would be their leader for the next years. Thus, the revenge, first in La Vuelta the last day, and now here. Not the first time we see this kind of movements in cycling, remember Armstrong.

If Van Aert had taken 2 minutes more (or even 1.5 minutes more), he would have not attacked yesterday and perhaps ended the stage with Uran and Carapaz, taken the yellow and would have ridden to defend it today on a not so steep mountain. He would be very close to pogacar right now, perhaps still in yellow, with 5 minutes or more on the other podium contenders with a TT to come but instead he's given up.

Had any team had the numbers Movistar had, they would have ridden to limit their loses to Carapaz. Even though, yes, the other leaders were isolated, there would have to be at least a decent climb to attack, as well as have guts and good legs. GC racing does not happen on flat terrain as they cancel each other out so quickly. Rigo was isolated because EF had ridden Higuita and Powless. So Movistar, just like BEX did on stage 20 of the Giro by riding Chris Juul-Jensen, were just riding their race, it just so happens to be that they had too much firepower that it came out looking bad.

Because Movistar held a grudge against him after he left the team. Movistar was giving him low salary. He was offered higher from other teams the reason he left Movistar. The movistar coach even called him traitor and disgrace and doesn't even want to mention his name. Just saw it in Netflix. "The least expected day" team movistar.

No that's not the truth. They explain more details in S2. Carapaz committed with Ineos before he won the Giro. His agent wasn't truthful about it, making it seem like Carapaz was interested in staying at Movistar/willing to negotiate a new contract. Movistar was willing to drop Landa to keep Carapaz, which is what they did. I heard rumors that Movistar found out the accidently from Ineos, not from Carapaz or his agent. That's some shady game-playing.

Movistar just didn't want Carapaz to gain too much time on Mas, that's all. Easy one. I don't understand why a lot of you guys, didn't see that.

@Stefan Bà and at the same time they dragged Pogacar to the finish with fresh legs. Instead, they should have put pressure on Pogacar to pull back Carapaz. These dudes get paid to make pro decisions and amateur ones.

Carapaz betrayed Movistar after he promised he would stay if they would win the Giro. Movistar does not have a rider that can win the Tour for now, so they should forget about him!

What if no other teams want Ineos to have at a GC leader at front of race, as they are too strong a team and they could close the race down, game over

If Moviestar is utilizing their team and all that goes with that in terms of tikme, $, and resources just to spite Carpapaz, then they have absolutely lost their minds. And as poor as some race tactics are sometimes within certain teams, I highly doubt that this could have been more than a happy coincidence for anyone within the organization that has anything against Carapaz. They were just playing their best tactic as they saw it in the moment. I really do not think the main goal was to wreck someone else's chances. It was just an unhappy coincidence for Carapaz. But from a tactical standpoint, I do not think it is something that Ineos could have predicted Moviestar would choose to do when sending Carapaz in the move.

How often do Ineos/Sky put their entire team at the front to pull in a one day race, and then get 0 riders in the top 10? How often does Movistar pull at the front in the Tour and only manage to fatigue their own captain. It is just what they do.....The brainless top of the cycling world.

I was thinking that if Movistar were chasing Carapaz just out of spite it was a really bad way to ruin the race and their image as a team. But this video makes me think they just had questionable tactics and maybe consider him a close rival to Mas. I hope so because we want to see a race run properly and what happened at the Vuelta was not good for cycling. Keep the beef off the road please.

Don't forget EF was also put a guy on the front to chase first. So Movistar wasn't the only team who chased. After EF there's no other team with numbers to chase. It might wrong in our eyes, but with 5 people on their team, should they just hang back then while Carapaz has run away in the front? Mas was top 5 last year with a similar situation. (he didn't look good). You can't say..well, people in front of Mas are riding nicely behind Mas. Yeah, because they don't have teammates to chase, Movistar does. If that means they are helping other GC, they had no choice, unfortunately. It's a balance. Do you want to let Carapaz put time on your leader or give a chance to your leader not to lose time to other leaders? Yeah, the downside is you are riding for your rivals. Saying that Mas isn't a good climber, his ITT is bad.. that's not a relevant argument. You have to look at it from Movistar's perspective. No team will say... oh my leader sucks, so we will just let someone like Carapaz runs away. It's a 3 weeks race, you never know. He managed to be top 5 last year and top 5 Vuelta. With Roglic and Thomas out, there's a possibility he could go higher. The way I see it aside from Pogacar, everyone in GC right now is pretty even.

Movistar do a lot of thinking and get the wrong answer quite often. Put it down to the DS is not the greatest tactical thinker. Lots of sports have that problem with a decision maker.

Movistar mngmt makes poor choices for their own team and they chase down Carapaz all the time - 2x so far this tour and earlier at the giro. I assume it’s a bunch of cartoon villains running that team.
