    As someone who has a weird fascination with the Taiping Civil War, I have to say that Maupin oversimplifies it to the point of completely inventing history. The Heavenly Kingdom was not Christian in a way that any Christian would recognize and even Christian missionaries contemporary with the war constantly wrote about the difficulties of understanding a rebellion that was nominally Christian but was not Christian in any functional way. It would also be wrong to summarize it as an anti feudal war when the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom went to establish its own feudal systems in its territory despite the early peasant nature of the uprising. I could go on about how he also ignores the Manchu vs Han ethnic and cultural tensions, the complex interference of European powers economically and ideologically, the warlord-ism that took place throughout the country, the north vs south divide, the extent to which it was a result of Qing failures facing the Chinese concept of the mandate of heaven, the crisis of China dealing with superior powers to itself in the region, and countless other problems with his interpretation. Basically this hurts to see in every way and categorizing this period of history as Maupin tries to is plain incorrect. No one studies this period often enough so it easily gives rise to the type of mythological history we see here.
    If anyone wants a good book that will introduce this crazy period of Chinese history to you in English I reccomend "Autumn in the Heavenly Kingdom" by Platt.

      @404Dannyboy 2 роки тому +25

      @@cv4809 Impossible to say really. At first they ostensibly were but warlords be warlords and wartime measures of holding a city be wartime measures of holding a city. When they were first laying out their ideas on how to run the state it was indeed pretty pro peasant but still a bit feudal. That said, the Taiping were hardly truly stable in ideas and ideology and had an internal warlord problem as well as the problems of war with the Qing so we can't know the end result of their social plans for sure. There were moments of them wanting to free up the peasants and moments of arguing for central control in a theocratic and highly regimented kingdom where the peasants would stay peasants. You could produce a general rule that at any point in time the Taiping were more egalitarian through the majority of the conflict but they were often less free due to flirtation with "theocratic" and military law. It was also generally much more poorly run so it was less fun to live in, again, depending on time and place. The Taiping are so nebulous and changing that comparing them to another contemporary party or political ideology in China is like comparing a rainbow to a single color. It is almost best to think of the Taiping as a coalition of everyone who hated Qing rule gathering under a dude who thought he was the brother of Jesus and his family or one a number of warlords. Each of these parties got to express their ideology in some way while the Taiping state constantly fought an extremely bloody practically genocidal war(both sides went pretty slaughter and starvation heavy on cities and peasants though I would argue the Qing were worse).

    35:39 - "Wait. the bible is plagiarising her work?"
    This is a particuarly good part to demonstrate how Maupin is in autopilot bad-faith question mode, instead of genuinely engaging with his own thoughts and hearing what is being said (whether it's stupid stuff from Unruhe or not).
    Everything is so slimy.. he can't ever just directly engage with something, he has to twist and warp it until he's answering something entirely different and then he will stick to that, intentionally making everything after that really messy and all over the place. I hate shit like that, I'm not good at keeping track, so it fucks me up when people do it lol.
    Edit: Okay there's like a million more of these lol.

    15:00 I never thought I would say this at any point in my life, but: as a fan of Bleach, I know what rebellion he's talking about. The Shimabara rebellion was a large-scale uprising in the 1630s in Japan, in which tens of thousands of people rose up to protest against unpopular taxation and policies prohibiting Christianity. Most of them were local ronin and Catholic peasants. They were defeated, and around 40,000 were executed in the aftermath. This took place in the Edo period, which, of course it did because everything bad about Japan can be traced back to the Edo period. But that was the last large-scale revolt in Japan until the 1860s.

Of course, I had become a socialist at like 16 when I was dumber than most of the "ignorant" people I looked down on. It only took me bothering to learn what socialism actually was, instead of listening to my right-wing high school teachers who said socialism = When Everybody Pay 100% Taxes And Earn Equal Wage, And Government Does (Bad) Stuff.
      I did have a few radlib/socdem teachers who said socialism = When Everybody Pay High-ish Taxes And Government Does (Good) Stuff, which made everything more confusing tbh. In my mid-twenties I can safely say that most people are perfectly capable of understanding socialism and are at least somewhat open-minded toward it, unless they have intellectual baggage from a shitty education like I did. They don't need a vanguard party to enlighten them, they don't need a powerful state to protect them from themselves, they just need someone to politely explain how they suffer the material consequences of capitalism and how socialism can help. If we had a legitimate democracy, I'm convinced they'd vote for it in a heartbeat.
