Ii just found a mint condition Gibson Banjo. It's going to set me back a bit lol.
Wow, that's awesome! Enjoy it 😁
Appreciate the tip, thanks
Thanks for watching!
You want to see fast? Don Wayne Rino plays nitro banjo.
Don is a great player!
Umm, thank you. I feel a little silly now, but it's never too late to learn technique.
I don't like using those finger picks. Are they necessary? I don't even understand how it's possible to play really fast like I see people doing
They feel weird at first, but they are necessary to get the correct tone and volume. The speed will come with time and patience.
@@MasonCroneMusic thank you
Very simple but wonderful tip thank you
Thanks for watching!
Always liked the sound of the banjo but I don’t understand why it’s an instrument that is pretty much only played in this one style. Fast. Strange. What if violin was only played super fast?
A lot of bluegrass banjo is fast, but a lot isn't. There are lots of slower bluegrass songs and even banjo styles that aren't fast at all, most people think it's only fast because that's pretty much all you hear in public if a song has a banjo.
Good advice - generally .
Now watch something from Mean Mary James .
Please correct me if I'm wrong but the banjo is tuned in open g right?
Correct, open G is standard.
@@MasonCroneMusic thank you so kindly Merry Christmas may GOD Bless you and all your loved ones keep y'all safe through the harsh weather ahead especially!
I thought you were our old banjo player that moved back to TN. You sound just like him
Haha!
@@MasonCroneMusic Are you from TN?
Nope, Georgia 🙂
Well, Jason moved back to Sneedville TN which is in the very NE tip of TN. He's a virtuoso banjo player - played at Grand Ole Opry the first time when he was only 11 with Jeanine Carter (of the Carter family)
Im going 4 heart surgery & want to learn, any simple tips?
Gostei
Obrigada!
Good advice. I have a lot of scar tissue on my right middle finger knuckles and it's been rough finding a hand position. I realize now that you mention it that I have been straightening them out and haven't gained much speed. It's been driving me nuts. I also can't use my middle finger to pick if my ring finger is on the banjo head. I have to curl my ring finger up in order to use my middle finger, so only my pinky can rest on the banjo head. That's frustrating as well. This is going to be a lot of work for me.
Thanks for sharing! It's actually totally okay for your ring finger to not make contact with the head, it just doesn't work for some people and many great players do it with just their pinky.
Yk scar tissue is a really good song btw…
Dude, I have tried so many times to learn the banjo. For some reason I cannot keep my pinky and ring finger mounted to the Head. My middle and index finger are always extended out too far. I have tried and tried by going super slow trying to get my hands to form that tight position. I'm at the point where I'm just about to give up. I own a Sullivan vintage 35, and I'm thinking of selling it because I feel like I'm never going to learn how to pick correctly. Any suggestions?
It's really just a matter of being intentional and making sure you're doing it right. Take it slow. There's no magic formula to it, just practice.
You're amazing ! 👏 Can you make a UA-cam short on when you started playing the banjo and why the banjo ? Love your videos
Thanks! I'll think about that 😊
Have I been using fingerpicks wrong this whole time, or are you wearing them backwards?
You've been wearing them wrong this whole time. Sorry 🤷♂️😂
Does this work for guitar? Because I have a banjo tab that I want to recreate with a guitar that’s pretty fast.
If you're fingerpicking it should 🤷♂️
@@MasonCroneMusic thanks!
Hey Mason, I’ve been teaching myself banjo with your vids (FANTASTIC lessons, I’ve made huge progress in a few weeks, been a guitar player for 20 years and this is a wicked hard transition). I have really big hands and I struggle to get my fingers close together like this, do you have any recommendations/do I need to adjust my wrist angle more?
Thanks! I'm not really positive what you're asking without seeing a video or picture. I'd say just go with what feels comfortable and practice till you get it! It doesn't have to look a certain way just as long as it works for you.
@@MasonCroneMusic haha thanks! I know that wasn’t the clearest description. This clip was very helpful because I’ve gotten into the bad habit of keeping my index a bit too floppy which works great for forward rolls but was making everything else more difficult. I think I need to try taking the arm rest off and see if that extra room helps. It feels like my index and middle finger dig into the strings a bit too far. Thanks again!
so there's where my bluechip went?
You got me, I'm sorry. I just couldn't resist, they're too darn expensive for me to buy one myself! 😂
🤯
Thanks for watching!
Wait…is that how your supposed to wear those finger picks? I’ve been wearing them incorrectly!?
It is how you're supposed to wear them 😂
Excellent tip 👌
Thanks!
Thank you 😂
I just noticed you only got 3 fingers and a thumb 🤔
I have all five fingers... My ring finger is just covering the pinky and you can't see it from this angle.
I'm so jealous! I love the banjo!
That's awesome, you should get one!
Imma get a banjo and play with my nails screw them picks
Might break the nails... 😂
Fire tip
First time banjo purchasing tips?
I wouldn't spend a ton until trying it out and making sure you're gonna stick with it. That being said, I'd still buy the best you can afford because quality of the instrument makes a big difference in how enjoyable it is to play.
What is on his fingers?
Picks 🤷♂️😂
Well done dude excellent camera angle 👀
Thanks 😄
Even tho i play guitar this helped , thanks man
Glad to help!
Chill. My girl is on here
🤣
I want to learn.
Do it!
Question: How do you prevent your thumb and index finger from colliding (e.g., when you’re picking the third and second strings in the roll)? Do you extend your thumb out further than your index? My issue is that I have to lift my index finger way up to let my thumb play, and then vice versa.
Thank you so much for all your videos!
Hmm... It's really just something that takes practice. You have to intentionally avoid doing that until it feels natural. Just takes time!
Thanks!! Good job!!
Thanks for watching!
Love that sound
Thanks! This is super helpful as I’m starting banjo, keep it up!
Glad to hear it!
Did you buy it in Morocco?
No... 😂
@@MasonCroneMusic Because the banjo is of Moroccan Berber origin
You're AWESOME Mason!!!!!
Thanks 😂
Ill stick to electric guitar 🎸 🤘🏻💯🎼
Cool?
Awesome! Thanks for the tip!
