- My thanks to lowieh3451 for requesting this.
This song has hundreds of iterations, and possibly originates from "The Unfortunate Rake" in Victorian London. Whatever, it is a happy little ditty about a young man and his lady dying from an STD. For this version, it was suggested that I base it on the Doc Watson version, but, I do prefer to make my own arrangements.
I'm playing me 1964 Martin D12-20 rebuilt by Martin in 1998 with a D12-35 trim, and adjustable truss rod - something of a one off. However, like all good 12 strings and Martins it is incredibly challenging to keep in tune. The D'addario Capo - courtesy of my friend - "Sir Robin of Wales". I use D'addario EJ37 strings (12/12 - 54/30) tuned down one tone.
As always, I welcome your comments and suggestions for songs. If you have been .... thanks for watching
Splendid! As the other commenter said first. Really brought some justice to that ol’ song.
Hi, thank you! regards, Andy.
well well
Hi, hope you enjoyed it!
Very well played. Not easy on a 12-string. I think ‘Silly Moustache’ is unfair, so I’ll call you Splendid Moustache from now. Best wishes, AlYourPal in Harpenden.
Hi Alan, actually I don't find 12 string any harder than six strings - I guess you have to do less. Harpenden eh? I used to live in Hemel Hempstead, and play with a guy in Silverstone! best, Andy
In 86 years of listening to that song I've never heard those verses. A lot added to what I heard and learned years go. Well done though
Well you may have heard some from Doc Watson's version, and some from various others including Dave Bromberg, and rationalised. The song has been around since the early 1800s in London (Unfortunate Rake). I made the first part from the story of a man mourning his dying partner, and the second part a mixture of descriptions of his burial, assuming that he knows he'll die from the same disease as his partner. How he thinks he can be buried in his hat is an unresolved issue!
With all the variations, there is no reason not to design my own arrangement.
Brightened my Friday evening up Andy , Great Job !!
Love to hear The Randall Knife or The last gunfighter balled.
gosh, more requests. Actually, inspired by Guy's Randall Knife, I wrote my own "Dad" song, please try this : ua-cam.com/video/peK-dzNnig0/v-deo.html
@@SillyMoustache A dad song is on my list of things to do too . I nearly explained why I requested it 🥲. Incidentally my grandfather had two fingers missing as well. Keep up the great work👍
You are in fine form here, with a fine D35-12. Love it.
Thanks, and while it has a D12-35 trim, it was originally a 1964 D12-20 (mahogany) rebuilt and "customised by Martin in 1998.
Andy, I think the 12 string adds some mojo to the song - great choice of guitar to cover this song on. Well done and cheers from Sherman, Texas!!🤠
Hi Mojo, I worked it out on a 6 string, but felt the old 12 string gave it something more, so glad you liked it, thanks as always.
Gosh, two old favourites for the price of one. Many thanks for the treat.
Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching.
Sitting in the sun in Canada listening to a great performance. Well done. A perfect song for a 12 string.
Hi William, thanks for watching.
i'm completely mesmerized by this haunting performance and the architectural feat that is the headstock on that lovely martin .. .
Hi Again, I'm thrilled that you like it so much. the lyrics are a mixture of several versions including Doc Watson's version, but the "turn arounds" that break up the verses just "happened" I intend to perform it at my club later today. Thanks as always, Andy
A little Leadbelly style. Very nice. George in Montana
Hi, is it? That certainly wasn't in my mind when I thought up this arrangement, but I hope you enjoyed it.
Excellent Andy. What a treat going into the weekend. Great job on both singin and picking! Hopefully you are over covid? Be well.
Well, we thought so, but found out today that we have the symptoms of "long" covid, (brain fog, exhaustion, muscle pains etc) so it's going to be a challenging summer, but thanks for the kind thoughts.
@@SillyMoustache So sorry Andy to hear that prognosis. Hang in there, please get your rest, eat good food, lots of music … get well soon!!!
Great stuff Andy! Hope you are well, I always watch your vids and leave a like, but don't always comment.
I have been murdering this ol' tune for several years now. 6 string, with a little bit of picking thrown in with the chords. Same key as you, but hardly two lines the same!
I nicked "my" version from a live Arlo Guthrie performance which is here on t' tube somewhere.
Best, Jon
Hi Jon, great to hear from you! hope you are well. I scanned a load of versions on Y/T and I may have got the idea of the A-G-F-E bass line from him, it seems to add to the "drama" of the story.
All the best, Andy
It is great to hear your beautiful 11 string Andy.
Life can be a crap shoot too!
Great song, I will study it.
You always amaze me.
Hi John, what a nice thing to say/write - thank you! This song was a request, and I'd never played it before so I kinda rewrote it and added the run downs. But.. 11 string ? No the full compliment!
Bravo - love listening to your tunes Man !!
Glad you enjoy it! Thanks James.
Love it. Is that a D35 12? Gorgeous guitar. I played my friend’s D35 12 the other day and I could not put it down. Played every CSNY song I could think of!
Hi Mark, it is actually (or originally) a 1964 (first year) D12-20. Here's the story : ua-cam.com/video/JvoEo8GoWOk/v-deo.html
That's beautiful. Are you playing a Martin?
Hi Conor, yes it is my only Martin. Here is the story : ua-cam.com/video/JvoEo8GoWOk/v-deo.html
