Let The Mystery Be (in a Very) basic "boom chick" way.

  • OK, I'm not proud of this but it this is here for a one to one client of mine. (I actually did around twenty takes to play this, for me, unnatural way).
However, it is about the "Boom" (bass note - on I and III or on beats) with the "Chick" (down strum on II and IV, or off beats) and keeping them consistent.
Firstly, I would not choose to play a song in 1st position D, as I would normally use a capo on fret II and play the D as a C shape, the G as a thumb over "F", and the A as a G shape. As the thumb over F is challenging for many so I've used these 1st position shapes.
This is an exercise in synchronising the accompaniment with Iris Dement's lovely lyrics which are not evenly spaced, - now that ISN'T incorrect, but there are lines that are squished together like "where they gonna go", and "some say once your gone your gone forever," etc, we we need to keep the accompaniment consistent throughout.
I may delete this after my client has seen it, and I might even do the song in "my style" but the Boom-chick rhythm method is, for me so much more musical that the concept of "strumming patterns"

Sometimes I think we may have the same record collection. I have seen Iris DeMint in concert three times. Just like the late John Prine, she has a lot of stage presence. Much thanks for your rendition of this song.

Hi, As a Brit, way back in the 70s when I got sucked into a small but intense British bluegrass scene, and later when I became aware of the Texas singer-songwriter genres, I felt pretty isolated at some folk clubs who thought that American acoustic music was either blues or C&W (!!!) but that neither were "folk". I have a very large collection of music on my I-tunes and boxes of CDs stored in various parts of the house ..unplayed now! They will probably go to the recycling centre when I croak!

Andy, I like the fact that you played it in the standard cowboy chord version that we can do. I have never listened to Iris Dement as solo artist but listened to many of her and John Prine. I think you did a great job and I listened to it multiple times! Cheers from Sherman Texas to the honorary Texan!! 🤠

Hi Mojo, I first saw her at the Transatlantic Sessions filmed in Scotland in, I think, 1995, and I also saw her live in Portsmouth. iI can't tell you how difficult it was for me to play it like that! I'll probably redo it with capo on 2nd fret in my own style at some point.

Thanks Andy! I think I would like a Jumbo 12-fret, like an SJ-200

      Well, an SJ200 is a "S"uper "J"umbo but this a real 12 fret Jumbo : ua-cam.com/video/0Ku0Nkx8gew/v-deo.html

I enjoy the duet Iris would do with the late John Prine..have you any Prine-songs in your repertoire? As always I enjoyed the video.

Hi, Yes I have a fair few John Prine songs, they are great because they are usually short, simple and lyrics are well crafted. I do have "speed of the sound" but it is somewhat overdone now. Everybody Needs Somebody, I remember everything, Hello In There etc. Thanks for watching.

I don't think itis a great version, but that isn't the point. The guitar is my 2020 Eastman E40-00. Beautiful instrument.

@@SillyMoustache It really is a beautiful instrument. This song, though, would be fine on a plywood box, played and sung so nicely.
