@@donbracewell9752 - News to me as well. I saw Kansas at a casino in Connecticut back in 2003/04. But had been a fan since my mom bought the Point of Know Return album back in 1977 when it came out. Great year for music. Everyone had a hit record in 1977; Kansas, Styx, Queen, etc.

The song is definitely a wake up call, we get so caught up in the world, so many things we think are so important... they don't matter at all.

The song always takes me back remembering my father. He always liked to brag about being one of the first people to hear their live recording. It was in a small town called Ellinwood, Kansas. I remember him talking about the free beer they were giving away to go watch a band play. Later on in life we realized at that place in time they were recognized by a producer out of New York. My father said that man playing the violin was going to be someone great someday! Turns out they were all great.!

Seriously ? Underrated ? Johnny Spears ? Obviously you were not from my generation. Kansas was one of the most popular groups in the 70's, Carry On Wayward Son sold over 4 million copies worldwide, that was just ONE SOLO hit release. You don't sell over 30 million albums from being underrated lmaooo.

Carry On Wayward Son was their breakout hit with Dust In The Wind following to become their first number one hit. A real fun prog-rock Kansas song is Song For America. No One’s Home is a sad tune, but wonderful. People Of The South Wind, Point of Know Return, Leaving By My Backdoor…so many great songs!

A lot of their songs are based off of religious references. Dust in the wind comes from the phrase used on ash Wednesday when the minister marks peoples foreheads with ashes and says "remember thou are dust and to dust you will return". It is a way of reminding someone of their mortality and that they need to live a good life.

Your reaction brought ME to tears.
Yes, much of the music of the 60's and 70's was quite prophetic, spiritual, and stemmed from the Jesus-Movement, a response to the horrible Vietnam War. It was also a response to the growing materialism of the 70's. Unfortunately we did not LISTEN, and the 80's became even MORE materialistic!
But we ARE FINDING our way again, the proof being, wonderful people like you discovering all this older yet still-relevant music.
    God Bless you.

The mid/late 70s had a certain introspective, other-worldly magic swirling around... fantasy and sci-fi images beckoning to you that something more exists in your mind than in the normal daily world... whether from the art of Boris Vallejo or Frank Frazetta, to even the spaceship guitars on Boston album covers, to the soft, yet piercing call of Kansas's Dust in the Wind.

This band was so talented it was almost sinful. The song Dust In The Wind actually began when guitarist Kerry Livgren(blond headed guitarist) during a short break on the tour schedule began using the music to the song as a finger picking excercise sitting around home so his fingers wouldn't get too stiff when the band returned to the road. Livgren's wife heard him picking the music and told him it was beautiful and that he should make a song out of it. The rest as they say is history. Livgren wrote the song and it became Kansas's biggest selling single ever. To this day the song remains one of the biggest selling singles in rock history.
