  • In No Gi there is so much less to hold onto. Which can make it more difficult to execute techniques off your back when someone is keeping their distance.
Whenever I have someone get away from me I almost always sit up to a seated Guard position. This is a superior position for my style. It allows me to move quickly and even pop up for a takedown if the situation allows it.
The Guard sweep / entry that I show in this video starts when a person is just out of range. This happens a lot when someone is attempting to pass Guard with a longer range pass.
The sweep which I call an inside Lumberjack Sweep. Since the legs are on the inside of the person's body rather than on the outside. It's a great stand along BJJ sweep which is very effective if you can get to the position.
It's also a useful entry to leg locks and leg attacks. Even if you're a BJJ White Belt who isn't allowed to use twisting leg locks. It's effective for setting up straight ankle locks.
So if you're having trouble with people in No GI BJJ keeping their distance and you're unsure how to engage. Give this series a try. I hope it helps.

I love the flow drills you put out, those reps have really helped various parts of my game - any chance of a leg lock flowing drill? Keep up the great work, best bjj channel on YT.

Do you have an opinion on sport vs street jiu jitsu? I've been getting more and more interested in jiu jitsu by watching a lot of videos and listening to people talk about it, im just not sure which I would enjoy more and which I would get more out of. If you could provide more insight on the pros and cons of both that would be great. Thanks.

What's with your cut at 1:30? One moment your legs are both inside his, the next you have one free outside for a leg lock. Quite the segue.

Hey man I was a wrestler and recently got into Jiu-jitsu about a month ago. I love but everytime I roll I get absolutely throttled, even by some white belts. Honestly don't know if they're that good or I'm just that bad. Most the guys at my gym are MMA fighters both amateur and pro. Any advice whatsoever would be awesome ha.

Tyler Curry slow down, take it easy, try not to get bothered by being tapped out, and focus on technique (don't "muscle" out of situations). If you can, try do get someone to record you rolling, it's pretty awesome to be able to see and analyze what you are doing from "the outside".

Fredrik Wahlgren yea today I got a little advice as far as regaining guard and all today from someone that helped a lot. That was the premise was not trying to muscle it too much just relax and react. After that the work of controlling the 4 corners of the body. Not saying I went in there and was better but I started to last longer and be able to handle situations better. A small step for everyone else but for me it was huge.

Tyler Curry yeah it takes a bit of time. If you have a little money to spare I can highly recommend an app called "bjj concepts" by Grapplearts (think it's available for both iOS and android). It's made by Stephan Kesting (his videos here on UA-cam are brilliant) and Rob Biernacki (he seems to have super systematic understanding of grappling).
There's also a free PDF-book out there called "Roadmap to BJJ" (also by Stephan Kesting) which doesn't teach specific techniques, but more talks about what you should focus on in the beginning. Those ones has helped me a ton.

Fredrik Wahlgren what about Gracie Academy online? would that be good? Obviously the Gracie name is synonymous with jiu-jitsu

Tyler Curry probably great! Don't have any personal experience though. I might actually look into it myself! ;)
Edit: one thought though, the ones I recommended focuses on principles and theory, and not techniques. This means that they fit smoothly into whatever techniques your school teaches. As a beginner the standard recommendations seems to be to focus on just that, concepts, and not run off learning a million techniques half assed. The techniques will come, and they will work better if you have a solid understanding of their principles first. And concepts give you an ability to improvise stuff on the fly, which you can't do even if you learn a million techniques perfectly.
Look at submissions for instance! If you google "highest percentage submission in bjj" you can find some statistics. There are tons of cool submissions, but only 5 basic ones stand for about 80% (!) of all submissions in competition! Think they were in order: rear naked choke, guillotine, triangle, arm bar and arm triangle. So rather than learning just new submissions all the time, I try to focus on mastering these five with the concepts I learn from the app. :)
