Hi guys im working on a ford edge 2013 3.5 L its the same job do i need new bolts when taking the gears off? Im taking the bolts off because the dot is not pointing up its pointing downward??
i never put before a timing belt on a ford flex 2011 or any vehicle and the way you explained it is very helpful and good because you got audio and video, thank you very much for your help ,luis from harrisburg PA
When they tell you to "replace bolts" it's because the bolts are TTY (Torque to yield) which means the bolt tightened to the torque specs acts like a normal bolt, but when you add the extra 90 degrees, the bolt itself twists into it's final position. This guy is crazy for not replacing them
The secondary sprocket cam bolt2 that you decided to buy. What is the part number and where did you find it. Thanks for all the videos you post. You help many of us :)
Great movie, perfect show. Thank you. Thanks to such mechanics, you can try to do it yourself. I have a question. With what force do we tighten the shaft gear with a large bolt? How tightly do we tighten the tensioners? How much do we tighten the slides? I am asking YOU for information.
Question. So those gold links are the same as when you woulf mark the chain when replacing head gasket? And also another question. So when you crank the camshaft, and crankshaft to their TDC,(i don't know if my questions are even real question) and you put all the gold links to the dots, the timing is perfect? Im about to be done opening up the car and it scares me
How do u find top dead center? Do u lock camshaft before finding or after? I am changing all timing chains and sprockets, so when should I lock camshaft? Before I take old chains?
The are dots for colored chain links. The dots have no “pointers” on the engine. Very few engines time at TDC now. Robotic equipment may rotate cams and the assembly position/timing position has all pistons at least as far down in bore where valves will not contact if machinery moves cams during alignment step. The spot they choose also will not have cam lobes in a position where cams will want to turn and cause issues during chain fitting. With no marks you are hosed. The cam locking tools do position cams but the bigger use of those tools is to lock cams for breaking bolts loose and torquing when cam phasers and gears are removed and installed. Once the hubs are torqued marked links on chain set timing.
What if you aren't replacing the chain , Just replacing the water pump. The current chain doesn't have those gold making. Can you put it at TDC and put your own markings on the chain. Then put the chain back in the same way?
Did cam chain on my vw the gold link didn’t really matter the actuator only went on one way. The actuator wouldn’t sit properly if it wasn’t right. It the gold link is just a reference point.
For a used car with unknown history, how do I inspect the chain or tensioner to determine if it was already replaced, or is near end of life? I plan to replace water pump for sure. Thanks for detailed videos!
You would have to remove front cover and inspect the projection of the tensioner. Good is 12mm or less. I see many of these in my shop with no chain, guide, or hub issues. I am in a rural area and my customers have to drive 45 or more miles to work on light traffic roads. Most just replace everything with no inspection but they are not assured of being worn. Lots of idle time and too many miles between oil changes will wear the guides and chains. Some will have primary chain with no marks. You have to have marks for timing as there are dots but no marks to align the dots with. Crank mark will go between two links and the #1 intake is 18 3/16 inch to the middle of that link, #2 cam is 49 links away. This last distance is 1/2 link on the #1 cam dot, 48 whole links and the #2 cam dot mark goes in the middle of the 49th link. The distance is 24 1/2 inches from #1 to #2 tooth depressions in chain.
Upon a 'cold start' the chain begins to slack (stretch) over time. It will sound like a loose chain picking up slack for a second or two. Its a better sign after you get 17 codes reading cam fault and mis-fire etc. Hope that helps.
Is there any way I can turn crankshaft on 3.5 Duratec to align #1 piston TDC without bending valves. My chain jumped time turning my motor counter clock wise when trying to remove harmonic balancer. Chains are still on. As of now, I can only turn CC about 1/4 turn in either direction then stops against what I assume are valves. Trying to get back in time before dissassambling to change water pump. Thanks in advance for any help.
I have an 07 ford edge 3.5l fwd had a mechanic put new head gaskets kit, timing chain kit, and water pump on it, ran fine for about 5 miles, the thrower a vvt and camshaft sensor codes, replaced both of each part, still getting a camshaft position code, double checked timing and it was spot on please help
You guys skip the step how to removed the right side big timing belt spraket that's what I was looking for , u mess the hole video . Anyways thanks for ur video.
unscrew the sprocket bolts and the tensioner bolts. just simply take off the two sprockets, the secondary chain and tensioner as a unit in 2 seconds. they will slide right off provided that you took off the primary chain already.
ford spec is 180deg; not 90deg - just bought set and it says that in the paper and their video. but i am going to double check. thank you for making me pause
Hi Sir I don't have the special locking tools for my 2013 ford explorer 3.5 engine and am trying to replace my water pump. But I noticed something that made me stop to seek help before I continue. Immediately I took my timing chain off the left side phaser I saw the phaser turning, why is that. Have i damaged my engine? Need your help please.
I got a p0016 code on my 2015 Mazda cx9 3.7 with 95K , I went to drain my radiator and it looked like dirty oil coming out of drain cock at bottom of radiator
They are torque to yield bolts. In simple terms - they stretch, step one ensures that the sprocket is pressed on fully, step two gives a good starting point for the bolt stretch, step three (the 90 degrees) stretches the bolt. Now the bolt has solid attachment across temperatures.
If the cam holding tool slides in easily its timed cam to cam so technically no need for replacement. Although if your that far into the job you might as well replace what they illustrate in the video. All the tensioners and guides and chains will have wear depending on mileage. (Also very very very advised to replace the water pump.)
The water pump is actually the reason for the chain replacement. The water pump went out and I caught it right away. I talked to a couple mechanics and was told to just forget it. Once the water pump goes out the engine is screwed. But that makes no sense to me. It's a wearable part. So I'm going to go ahead and replace it. Just want sure about the cam set up. That's about the only part that intimidated me.
@@meanazzmopar1 How did your job go? Did you wind up needing to do more? I too have heard that a lot of engines had to be pulled due to bearings being screwed from the coolant getting into the oil from the seals failing in the water pump. My CX-9 over heated and shut down, I'm hoping the engine isn't toast, but I'll have to see when I start removing parts.

How many pound feet you tighten the bolts from the water pump, sensors and tensor ? Thanks
Water pump: 8.5-11.5 Nm
Tensioners: 8.5-11.5 Nm
Timing Chain Guides: 8.5-11.5 Nm
So basically you're safe with 10 Nm for all of those.

Its scary thinking that bolt gone break.
I'd put a towel over that other sprocket that will be major pain slipping and hitting that LOL.
Why do you have to loosen and tighten the bolts that much. Why not just torque them to spec?
These are not normal bolts. This explains it better than I could www.felpro.com/technical/tecblogs/proper-installation-use-t-t-y-bolts.html
The bolts stretch slightly when tightened, it's a one time use. Always replace all the cam bolts.
